About white noise

I don't know if you know the term white noise, but it is the word of the day on Vraie Fiction. Or word of the night, should I say. I hear some at the moment, like I do most nights at this time. This or pink noise. We use it to put little Wolfie to sleep. Basically, it sounds like a radio signal between stations, or an old TV when there is no signal. It sounds like hell. But it works. The first time I heard it, I said to my wife: "White noise might send our baby to sleep, but it sends me to the verge of madness." This deserves to be a new great unknown line. You can find some on YouTube, tell me how long you can take it.

The £10 book voucher

So I recently turned 40. To celebrate such important date and to maybe to make me forget I had reached such age, I received many nice gifts. They will I hope be the subject of other posts. The one I want to blog about tonight is the one the mother of Blonde Tickler: a ten pounds gift voucher to be spent in the local bookshop. It may sound silly, but I was quite moved. This family know me so well. The very next day, I went to the bookshop, where I am now very much known, and bought... For about £27 of books. I still saved ten. And I was not selfish: two books were for me, but one for Wolfie and one for my wife and I. And I encouraged a local business, so it was also my good deed for the day.

Perfide avril

Saint George and the Dragon

Happy Saint George's Day everyone! There are only a few hours of the day left, but I wanted to celebrate it. As usual, I am sharing this year's Google Doodle about it, which is borderline magnificent. I am also sharing this rendition of the most famous legend associated to the saint, found on YouTube. The saint patron of England is quite cool, I have to admit.

Monkfish

This may be a sign of middle age, or at least maturity: my idea of a great meal for a very special occasion is not some meaty dish, but fish. To me more precise, in this instance, monkfish. Also known as fishing-frog, frog-fish or devil-fish, because it is that ugly when in the ocean. Alive, it is like a sea monster really. But as food, it is oh so good! So like last year, this is monkfish I had to celebrate my birthday, in the same local restaurant, the very same recipe in fact, with pine nuts, capers and olives. Olives and capers, and a fish that nearly has no bones to speak of, this dish was made for me. I am really developing a taste for monkfish. Even though I eat it very rarely.

The Big Four-O

Today is/was my birthday. I am forty. The Big Four-O, as I understand it is called. I used to dread it, in fact I had been dreading for the latter half of my thirties. But somehow, on the day itself, it was actually okay, quite enjoyable. Life starts here, this is another common phrase/cliché about turning forty. I don't know if it is true, but I intend to blog more about it in the days and weeks to come, if I find time (which I have little of). My birthday was quiet for such a big event: no big party, just some pleasant time with our little family unit in this place of the world. But it was all right this way: a big celebration would have just prevented me to truly reflect upon it. Because this is what I mostly did today, in a way: reflect on the number 40.

A duck house

Sometimes, a duck likes proper comfort. This is what I thought anyway when I saw this duck house last weekend in the village of Hartley Wintney. In the middle of a rather large pond, I thought it had a striking look. So I took a few pictures and decided to share it on Vraie Fiction. Moral of the story: I am easily impressed.

Medusa's poison

Easter has come and gone and I barely had time to blog about it. I was looking for an original angle for my past post about Easter 2017, and I thought I would share this: what I had as my Easter beer. So I drank a ruby red ale named Medusa. Just like her. I bought it on Saturday, when I saw it in the aisle, I knew I had to try it and this would be my Easter ale. As I associate the season with Greek mythology (read my post here), it was only fitting. And I know it is maybe silly to choose a beer by its label, but it was such a gorgeous label, I had to try it. And maybe it is confirmation bias, but I thought it was a beer full of character like every red ale should be. After that pint, I was thirsty for more.So this was my poison for Easter. And it was certainly worth it.

Ennio Morricone for Easter

It is Easter in less than an hour, and I thought I would give some unusual Easter music, from a little known gem of Biblical movie. I am referring to the score of Moses the Lawgiver, which was composed by Ennio Morricone. The script of the movie/miniseries was written by Anthony Burgess and, since it is the 100th anniversary of Burgess' birth, it is another good reason to share it. The production of Moses was a troubled one and it has its flaws, often due to shoddy cutting (the film has many different versions of different length). But I daresay that it is far superior to any other Moses movie. Great dialogues, provocative deconstruction and rationalization of the Exodus, it is an iconoclastic, skeptical, sometimes blasphemous Biblical story. And there is the music. This piece could be the Israeli anthem.

This Good Friday feast that I will not have

As a tradition, this is what I usually have on Good Friday: bagels from St-Viateur, the very best in the world. (Yes they are, read this if you don't know why.) With smoked salmon, soft cheese, onions, capers, tomatoes. Taken one by one, separately as you see it on the top right picture, it may look like nothing, but as a whole, it is a true feast and a most sacred meal.

For years and years when I was living in Montreal, this has been my most sacred meal. I had started doing it here in the UK too, until I got tired of the cardboard donuts they call bagels and stopped... To start again when I brought back proper bagels from home. Well, sadly this year as I have been away from Montreal for a very long time we are out of bagels from St-Viateur. And it's just pointless buying any bagel here. So I have no idea what I will have tonight, but it will not be my Good Friday feast. It is sad, but I made a promise to myself that this will not always be the case.

Spy Wednesday

Easter cannot come too early and the closer it is, the longer the wait gets. if not Easter, then at least the Easter holidays. And today/tonight we are still Holy Wednesday. Also called Spy Wednesday as, according to Christian liturgy, it is today that Judas Iscariot conspired with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus. In other words, he became a mole, a double agent, a snitch, an undercover, a spy. I really like the name Spy Wednesday, it sounds dark and mysterious with a hint of menace. And the Godless heathen that I am has a confession to make here: I have always been fascinated by Judas and his place in the Biblical narrative. As far as I am concerned, he is the most interesting character of the Bible, an ambiguous figure whose motivations are a subject of debates and deep analysis. Myths and legends have plenty of traitors, but few are as interesting as Judas. Anyway, happy Spy Wednesday.
