Farewell to Chicoutimi

This post may be my last post of the year 2012. Obviously, I don't know when I will blog again in 2013, with the (very likely) post-Christmas blues and the homesickness. But 670 posts in 2012, it is not bad, although I could have written less and better ones.

So tonight is my last night in Chicoutimi, tomorrow I will go back to Montreal. I have mixed feelings about my home town, but I love it during winter, especially around Christmas, when it is buried in the snow. Remember the lines from The Dragonfly of Chicoutimi I often quote:

"Chicoutimi is an Amerindian word
it means up to where the water is deep
this word refers to the Saguenay
a big a beautiful a splendid river
but Chicoutimi as a town is ugly
as every American town
and this ugliness is very interesting
but fortunately nature surrounds every town
in this country
and nature cannot be ugly"

I think the picture, taken by my brother, illustrates this in a nutshell. And it shows why I will miss it.

This Christmas's Dungeons & Dragons

As my readership knows, he Holiday season wouldn't be complete without a good game of Dungeons & Dragons. My brothers and I played it yesterday, all afternoon and all evening. Unfortunately, our friends are all around the map, so it was only us three playing. But we enjoyed it all the same, after four long years of being unable to play, for various reasons. We are going to play again this afternoon, maybe even get very near to finish the very long campaign we have been doing.

The image here is from Larry Elmore. I find the dragon a bit weak looking, he is not my favourite drawn by Elmore, but the picture fit the Christmas atmosphere well. Elmore as always makes the scene dynamic and he draws great snowy landscape.

The Twelve Days of Christmas (twice)

It is still Christmastime and I thought I would upload two different takes on The Twelve Days of Christmas. I say two different takes, but both are parodies. One is a short pastiche written and (I think) read here by John Julius Norwich. I blogged about it four years ago. The second is a dramatisation of the German version of the carol, acted by Julie Andrews. I find both takes hilarious.

The Feast of Stephen

We are the day after Christmas, which means we are... St Stepen's Day, of course. You can read a lot about it here. For me, it has a simple but essential meaning: it is the day to avoid Boxing Day.Other people remember it from the lyrics of Good King Wenceslas, a carol which I have decided to upload on this post. It is the third year in a row that I upload the carol on this blog. It is becoming a tradition on Vraie Fiction. So enjoy the day and the music, I hope the frost is not cruel but that it is snowy where you are.

A Christmas Tale

Merry Christmas everyone.I thought I would offer you a Christmas as a sort of blogging/virtual present. I found googling about it a short story/tale by Alphonse Daudet translated in English. It is taken from Les Lettres de mon Moulin. I have blogged about it in French before, back in 2009. The story is about a priest, Dom Balaguère tempted by the devil, who took the guise of his clerk Garrigou, on Christmas Eve to rush up the and thus mess up the three Christmas masses he needs to perform, so he could eat the Christmas supper (réveillon). It is, in other words, about the sin of gluttony. Which is an important element of Christmas. The tale is called Les trois messes basses, in Enligh it is translated by The Three Low Masses or The Three Christmas masses. You will find the story here.

Tell me what you think about it. It is my dad's Christmas Carol. When he was a child, growing up in a very Catholic Québec, he had to read it and learn the story by heart. He also had to sit through the Midnight mass before going back home to celebrate. So he understood Dom Balaguère's impatience. Even if one cannot care less about Catholic moralism (like myself), he/she can still enjoy the tale. It is a beautifully told story, atmospheric like XIXth century literature often is. You can feel the cold weather and smell the food.

Question existentielle (164)

A Christmas great unknown line

I have not written a great unknown line in ages (well, 10 days). My little brother gave me this one yesterday. He was showing the family's nativity scene to one of his friends. He explained to him in a single line how a family of unbelievers could have a nativity scene: "We are religatheists." It is pronounced "relidjaytheist", if you are wondering. A new word, which is not exactly synonymous with cultural Catholic or cultural Christian.ANyway, it is a good answer as any to the presence of the nativity scene here.

Christmas tree

This is the Christmas tree by night, with the full lights on. You can see a picture of it in daylights here. I have not much to write about, except that this picture does not give it justice. I am very proud of our Christmas tree and of the excessive decorations we gathered over the years. I just wanted to share this picture.

The Christmas tree

This is this year's Christmas tree. We finished decorating it on the morning on the 22nd, we had started on the 20th. It is more impressive at night. As my brother (who by the way took the picture) said, it is an operation for four men (we were only three) and lasting three days. Bringing it in the house was in itself an epic struggle. So here it is anyway, the Christmas tree of 2012.

Christmas reading

The treasures you can find when you get home and have a look through the bookshelves. I (re)discovered Discovering Christmas Customs and Folklore today (well, the 21st, as my blog posts when I am in Québec get published on GMT, not on local time). I say I discovered it, but really my mum did. I bought it back in 1999, during my first year in England, as a gift to her, but she never came round to read it. I will this year, it will be my Christmas read. I wonder if I didn't buy this gift a bit for myself, so I feel slightly guilty about it. Still, it is the kind of fun book about folklore I love to read by the Christmas tree. So I will read it.

Carol of the Old Ones

Well, today is/was supposed to be the end of the world, according to the Mayas. SO I need to blog this quickly, before the world comes to an end. How will you spend your last few hours? (Or minutes?). I will spend them listening to a very fitting Christmas carol, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mytho. Lovecraft wrote at least one storu set at Christmas, The Festival. It uses the Pagan roots of Christmas and its dark side. Inspired fans used Carols of the bells as a basis to write their own Lovecraftian carol. It mimicks the original so well, it is difficult to hear the difference at first. But here it is:
