Christmas reading

The treasures you can find when you get home and have a look through the bookshelves. I (re)discovered Discovering Christmas Customs and Folklore today (well, the 21st, as my blog posts when I am in Québec get published on GMT, not on local time). I say I discovered it, but really my mum did. I bought it back in 1999, during my first year in England, as a gift to her, but she never came round to read it. I will this year, it will be my Christmas read. I wonder if I didn't buy this gift a bit for myself, so I feel slightly guilty about it. Still, it is the kind of fun book about folklore I love to read by the Christmas tree. So I will read it.

Carol of the Old Ones

Well, today is/was supposed to be the end of the world, according to the Mayas. SO I need to blog this quickly, before the world comes to an end. How will you spend your last few hours? (Or minutes?). I will spend them listening to a very fitting Christmas carol, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mytho. Lovecraft wrote at least one storu set at Christmas, The Festival. It uses the Pagan roots of Christmas and its dark side. Inspired fans used Carols of the bells as a basis to write their own Lovecraftian carol. It mimicks the original so well, it is difficult to hear the difference at first. But here it is:

Question existentielle (163)

Where the water is deep

Quick update, as I know I don't blog much these days. I intend to blog more in the upcoming days, when I will be less jetlagged. I am since this afternoon in Chicoutimi for Christmas. Chicoutimi means "where the water is deep", hence the title of this post, which I used before. It feels very deep and very much in the middle of nowhere, I always feel slightly foreign coming back here. But at least it looks like winter and there is snow.

The art of storytelling

"Long ago, in the old days, there ruled in Sweden a king called Gilfy. King Gilfy loved his northland, even in the bitterly cold winter when, for months on end, the sun never shone and the gloomy forests and mountains were hardly illuminated by the shadowy light reflected from snow and ice. Poor people then were glad to keep close in their cabins, burning the logs they had chopped in the autumn to see them through, while the famished wolves flitted between the trees like ghosts and frequently snuffled up to the barred and bolted doors."

This was taken from this book, text of Brian Branston (this one?), drawing of Giovanni Caselli. When I said on this post that the story are nicely told, that was an understatement. This is setting the place and atmosphere so beautifully, it is crafted storytelling. To the northerner I am, it has the charm of the familiar beauty. I needed to share it, especially since it is a rare book now.

Encore Ciné-cadeau

J'aimerais savoir.

Christmas games and atmosphere

As my long time readers know already, I associate Christmas and especially Christmas carols with Dungeons & Dragons. So this year, like last year, I have decided to upload a picture from Larry Elmore accompanied by a Christmas carol. My brothers and I listen to Christmas carols before gaming sessions during Christmastime, sometimes during a game itself. It puts us in the right gaming mood. And the right seasonal mood too. They go hand in hand, Christmas, winter and Dungeons and Dragons. So I have decided to upload this picture, which I love, although maybe not as much as Avalyne the Life Giver. I always thought the mix of Orcs, giants, undead and Barbarians (Vikings?) was a tad odd. But one can make such alliance. All the same, it's a great picture. The evil sorcerer (he looks like a magic user) on his chariot, travelling through the snowy mountains, a nasty the Orc scout looking defiantly at the viewer (player-character?). Evil must be opposed, but this evil party might be difficult to oppose to.

As it is almost tradition on this blog and because I think it fits the setting of the picture, I have decided to upload again O Come, O Come Emmanuel/Veni, veni Emmanuel. It is a carol I associate with journeys in the snow (albeit maybe more with this interpretation) and it is a good enough reason to upload it again.

Handel for Saturday

We are getting closer and closer to Christmas, so I thought this blog needed a bit more Christmas music. I thought a piece from The Messiah was in order. I could have uploaded a Christmas carol, but I really wanted some Handel tonight, something that is not exclusively Christmas related (I listen to it during Easter just as much, maybe more) yet fits the season and the wait. There will be Christmas carols in the upcoming days. Tonight it is For Unto Us a Child is Born. I think I found a good enough version on YouTube. I hope you enjoy.

Chicoutimi, snow and a great unknown line

My brother PJ gave this great unknown line in a comment on this post, which I decided to immortalise here: "The snow will stay, global warming has yet to ruin Chicoutimi's perfect white Xmas record." I am not always proud of the city (or town?) I grew up in, not every moment of my life, for reasons I will not mention here. And I know that being proud of my home place for meteorological reasons is a bit silly. Still, at least Chicoutimi should be known for something good.

LGB trains in a Christmas display

I sometimes blog about the family's LGB train, which is our pride and joy and the one toy we (my brothers, my father and I) kept from childhood and never got bored of. We put it on display during Christmastime now, mainly, setting it around the Christmas tree. You can find a video of our train here. But I found on YouTube another video of LGB trains running around a Christmas display and I thought about uploading it here. It is quite a nice display and electric trains are mroe exciting in motion. Watching this, even on YouTube, I get goosebumps.

12/12/2012

Something my colleagues noticed today which had completely escaped me: it was, it is still in fact, the 12th December 2012, the 12th day of the twelfth month 2012. I did not notice. Anybody did? And I missed 12:12, of the 12th of the twenlfth 2012, where I could have scheduled a blog post like I did on the first Friday the 13th this year. A completely meaningless post, where the content is the publication time itself. It is either something very trivial or very philosophical, I don't know. You tell me if it has or can have any meaning. Maybe to people who love or hate even numbers. Tell me what you think.

Dites-moi si je me trompe.

Fenrir the wolf

Well, today is Tyr's Day as my readership knows from this post. And I am reading at the moment this book. So I decided tonight to upload maybe my favourite picture made by Giovanni Caselli: the giant wolf Fenrir tied down. This shows when he was bounded by the Aesir (I cannot join the a and the e as it should be), after he ate Tyr's hand. The original image is much bigger, I have only uploaded here half of it. As Christmas is coming and I associate Viking myths with the Nativity, and as there is a dark side to Christmas, I thought it was fitting to blog again about Norse mythology and this wanton brutish force that is Fenrir, who personifies the scarier aspects of winter so well.
