Tea from Vietnam

I am not a tea connoisseur, but I am a tea enthusiast and my relative ignorance allows me to make very interesting discoveries. This was the case two days ago in a local outdoor market, where there was a stand of Serendipity Infusions. I had seen them before and had bought tea from them which I had enjoyed, so I was eager to make new discoveries. I got very curious about their Vietnam OP, as I rarely if every drank teas from Vietnam. So I bought one pack of Vietnam OP and one pack of something else (I will blog about the latter another time). I was really impressed when I tried this one: for a black tea it is really smooth, even delicate, it has plenty of flavour, but none of the bitterness one can expect in black teas. So that is one more land of tea makers to explore.

The story of the Lambton Worm

I blogged before about the Lambton Worm, this old English myth about a monstrous serpent which fascinated me when I was a child, way before the internet. I have always wanted to revisit the legend and discover more about it. Well, during our visit at the National Museum in Cardiff, I learned about a book titled The Curse of the Lambton Worm, in a section of the museum about... normal worms. I don't know how easy it is to find the book, but I will look for it, and indeed any book on the legend of the Lambton Worm and will add them on my reading list.

A day without socks

There is a sure sign that summer is very much here, at least for now: I spent the whole day barefoot. There was only one brief moment at the end of the afternoon when I put socks on to go to the shops, just so I could look somewhat civilized and not like the lawless savage I truly am at the core. Otherwise, both Wolfie and I went barefoot today. It felt great. I love a day without socks.

Time for Pimm's

It is not summer yet, not technically, but the weather is summery enough, which means it's time for Pimm's. In any case, May is the month when one should start drinking it. I rarely drink Pimm's, I need to be in the right state of mind to drink it: the weather has to be nice, for one, then it must be as hot as it is sunny, but not too hot as it is a treacherous drink: it can be drunk as easily as juice and goes easily to the head. My wife had this can of Pimm's a few weeks ago, when the weather was not quite Pimm's proper, and it tasted exactly like fizzy strawberry juice. Right now would be ideal.

Island in the Sun

I know we are not summertime yet, technically, but it has been sunny and hot today and it certainly felt like summer. On hot days like this, I listen to Harry Belafonte. So I decided to share tonight Island in the Sun, which fits the summery weather we have been having. And just because it's Harry Belafonte.

Travelling second class by train

As I mentioned yesterday in a French post, we will be traveling in a couple of days to London, to see a friend of my wife and her baby boy, who is about two months younger than Wolfie. Which means we will take the train, the first time since last June. I am quite looking forward to it. To be out on a special day and also to travel by train, which is my favourite way of travelling. But unlike what I had pondered about in this post, we will go second class as usual, or whatever it is called nowadays. The wagon might be jammed, smelly, there might be no seat available even, especially when we will be leaving London, it might be as comfortable as a train can be. But it takes a lot for me to find train travels unpleasant.

And if you were wondering, I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York. This was not a wagon, it was a box, and it makes me think that travelling second class then must have been far worse than now, even on a bad day.

Tank

About a year ago, we were walking on the main street of our little town when we saw this tank. Apparently it is from a company that offer tank hires for special events the way others have limousines or horse carriages. For me, the tank is two things: 1)the armoured combat vehicle any land based army has or had and 2)the toys based on the armoured combat vehicle that so many of my friends had when I was growing up. The tank was that mysterious mean of transport with weapons which I found absolutely cool. In it, you were near invulnerable and near invincible. (And yes there was that movie which I was always curious about but never watched). It became one of the many elements of our make belief games. I find it a bit sad that it is now turned into a limo, but seeing one like this, even in a mundane setting, it fired u my imagination and brought back lots of memories.

May Day(!)

I know May has barely started, but so far it has been the most dreadful start of May I have experienced in years. The only May I remember to be worse than this one was in May 1992, when it had snowed. In any case, it has been cold and miserable since the beginning of the month, I am still wearing my winter coat and I have a cold. It is supposed to get warmer, but I will believe it when I see it. May is meant to be this time when Spring is at its best, getting warmer and vaguely summery. Not this year, not so far. Don't get me wrong: I am an autumn person. But I do like a bit of seasonal change from time to time and I like May to look and feel like May. Rant over. This was meant to be cathartic.

Wolfie and Amy

No, no, we did not adopt a new cat. There are quite a few cats in the neighbourhood, apart from our own black and white cat, Domino, whom our son adores. I have not kept a precise record of them, but there are at least two on the little street where we live: a chubby fluffy tortoise shell cat and a chubby black cat named Amy, who is the cat of a friendly elderly couple. After a rough start, Amy and Domino ended up getting along very well, to the point where he visits her and her owners. But Wolfie himself discovered Amy and he seems that he likes her very much too. As you can see on the picture, he was eager to become her friend. My son truly is a cat lover.

Action Man Bookends!

One of the local shops, which sells mainly trinkets, is closing down. It is very sad, as it always is when a local shop is closing down, especially since this one has been here for at least eleven years. It was here when we moved to this town. That said, one can find true bargains in closing sales. Such as these Action Man bookends. You know I have been obsessed about the action figures which are to me the epitome of British boyhood games. I have been unable to find any action figure to buy, but at least I am now the proud owner of two bookends, which feature one rifleman and one grenadier respectively. It cost me £5, a true bargain I tell you. And now my bookshelves will look far more virile with a dash of British military class. Let me speak bluntly: these bookends are absolutely cool.
