My May (and yours)

May is now at an end. When a month ends, I try to find time to reflect on it on this blog. May is the last month of Spring, but this May has mostly felt like an early summer here, after a rough start. It was actually quite nice overall, with our first proper storms. And it also went very quickly, maybe partially because of the summery weather, it felt like we were one or two months early. And now, how was yours where you are?

Dr No

As the 28th of May was the birthday of Ian Fleming I thought it was fitting to give one of his novels as reading suggestion for today. I chose Dr No. Again, the movie adaptation is more famous than the source material , but the novel stands perfectly on its own. In it, James Bond, having recovered from poisoning after the events of the previous novel, is sent to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of the station agent and his secretary. He is quickly put on the trail of Dr Julius No, a Chinese-German living in the island of Crab Key. Dr No turns out to be on USSR's payroll (well of course), as well as a sadist researching on physical pain, eager to use Bond as a guinea pig. During the novel Bond has to face many physical dangers, among them No's henchmen, a centipede, a fake dragon and a true giant squid. The Bond girl of the novel is Honeychile Rider, or Honey Rider for short, innocent woman child, wild, whom James Bond meets as she rises from the sea like Venus. Eros, Thanatos, there is just so much to enjoy here.

Four days

Yesterday was a bank holiday, so we just had a three days weekend. Obviously I love longer weekends, but I think what I like most about them when the bank holiday is on a Monday is that it means we have a four days week instead of five days. The next weekend is closer because the previous one has been longer. When it is long and tedious at work, or when I am in a rush, I will think about it, that I have a shorter week of work, and time will go faster.

Serendipi-Tea

During her last visit to our place two days ago, looking at the amount and range of various teas I had, Blonde Tickler said that I was tea obsessed. She may be right. I am not a connoisseur, but tea is my favourite non alcoholic drink and I like trying new things. Having read good things about green tea and its health benefits, I bought a pack of China Jasmine Green Tea from Serendipity Infusions. It was good, but not as much as their black tea from Vietnam I tried recently and which is now the favourite I have at home. I guess green tea is an acquired taste that I need to develop. So I will drink more of it. On a side note, I think the company should really have called themselves Serendipitea.

Question existentielle (328)

"Counting flowers on the wall..."

I don't know why, but there are moments in the year when I particularly enjoy the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. I haven't even seen the movie that often, it's not among my favourite or even among the movies I own. But the soundtrack, around this time of year especially, it always gets me. So today I decided to share one song here. It's Flowers on the Wall by The Statler Brothers. I know nothing about them, but this song is the epitome of farniente, which can be freely translated as pleasant laziness. It's been a bank holiday weekend and so far we have done diddly squat, or very little indeed, but we have enjoyed ourselves tremendously.

Psycho read

I thought I hadn't done a reading suggestion for a while and today was a good time ti do it. So today's reading suggestion is: Psycho by Robert Bloch, which I read last year. Because there was an original novel to the classic Alfred Hitchcock movie. As much crime fiction as it is horror thriller, it's a gripping read even if you know the story already. Because if this genre duality, for Halloween lovers like myself, it is a great story to read while the holiday is still far away, but already in the back of your mind. And it's fun to notice the little differences between the source material and its far more famous adaptation (Norman Bates for instance is middle aged, overweight and ugly in the book). Some books read like novels, this one you read like you'd watch a movie.

18 truites

The absent Tickler

Today, we received the visit of Blonde Tickler and her mother, but Brunette Ticklers was not with them. It should not be a surprise: the Ticklers are not sisters, they are just very, very good friends and have been since their first day of primary school. I hope it stays that way. We have not seen them together in a while, even though they used to be inseparable. The mother of Blonde Tickler said that Brunette has not been very well, and maybe it is "something hormonal". I forget that at their age, they are now practically teenagers. Be that as it may, their relationship is apparently in a cooler phase recently, which both saddens and worries me a little bit. I said, half joking (but slightly worried): "Well, as long as they don't like the same boy, it should be all right." Blonde Tickler had a genuinely disgusted look which reassured me and made her mother laugh. At least she is not there yet. Anyway, I think what I said deserves to be a new great unknown line. I do hope we can see the Ticklers together soon, like they used to be.

The Flying Bean Café

I recently blogged about the Flying Bean Café in the Beaconsfield train station, where we bought a coffee for my wife, a cuppa tea for me and some stuff to nibble. The essentials for train travels. I had not been in a café of that chain before, or at least I had never noticed it. I don't know how big the chain is, but I found or short experience at the train station very pleasant. It was a small place, a narrow counter in a small room. But the staff was nice and friendly, young a bit quirky and definitely hippy. And smiling. It's rare to find smiling people working in a coffee shop with genuine smiles on their face, genuinely warm to their customers, especially in a train station coffee shop. People that love their job. Anyway, I don't know if they are all like this, but it will be on our stop for our next trip from Beaconsfield train station.

"This gentleman"

There is an elderly couple among our neighbours, Amy's owner. They are very nice as elderly English people often are, always friendly and as they are cat owners themselves and our cats are friends, we get along fine. Something amuses me about their manner: the woman, talking to her husband once I had knocked at their door asking to keep an eye on Domino when we were away, referred to me as "this gentleman". In fact she always refers to me as "this gentleman". I find it surreal. As I mentioned in this blog post from 2013, I don't find myself particularly, or at all, gentlemanly. I am more from pleb than anything else really, in manners at least. It is a bit strange to receive this label and to have someone giving it to you with such sincerity. I know it is a sign of politeness, but still.

Books for the Action Man bookends

I have blogged before about these Action Man bookends which I had at a bargan price (£5). After almost a month they are still in their box, to my great shame. Because I have plenty of books, but they hold very well by themselves and there is no need to the support of bookends. All the same, I want them on display somewhere. They represent a British cultural icon and are the epitome of nostalgia for one, and then it would really give some style to the bookshelves. What I really want to find is books that would fit the nature and look of the bookends. Like adventure novels, for instance, or war stories. I want a whole section of books in between them that is about men of action. Come to think of it, maybe I need to buy new books.
