Leaf Blower Solo

Last Monday morning, after a night when I had trouble to sleep, I got woken up round 7:15 by a bloody leaf blower! That was not the first time, and I blogged about it before. And I just don't get it. Why so bloody early, for one. And why use leaf blowers at all, in a time of yer when there's barely any leaf on the ground. Not that I like leaf blowers in autumn, I hate them even more then, because I happen to like colourful leafs on the ground. So yes, I wonder who is the idiot who thought this was a good idea.

The Milkman

It was the end of the afternoon/early evening yesterday, when somebody knocked at the door. I first dreaded it was one of my pesky neigubours, but no. It was a young Asian man who said he was our local milkman. Well, that was not quite true, he works for Milk & More, and was promoting the services. I first quickly dismissed him, saying thank but no thanks, then I kind of felt bad. For two reasons: because he was enthusiastic and full of energy late in the day, because I love to encourage local businesses rather than big chains. So I went out, hailed him and asked him to give me his pitch. Which he did, again with energy and enthusiasm. Turns out they don't merely deliver milk, but all other groceries. And they are offering a discount. It's limited time only, provided by him, etc. I told him I'd think about it. I don't think I will go through with it, but I do like the age old tradition of milk delivery at the door. So yes, I wish Milk & More every luck for their business venture and who knows. I might actually require their service one day.

Mon 31 juillet

Halloween Art and Crafts

I know you probably think I'm early to get into a Halloween mood, but apparently, it is contagious. My wife found on Easily Does It (don't know them at all, didn't even know of their existence since two days ago), that they organise a ton of family art and crafts workshops for autumn and Halloween. Things that Wolfie would enjoy, things that daddy would definitely enjoy doing with Wolfie as well (even though I am not very good doing art and crafts). And Wolfie's mummy, who is not very keen on Halloween, likes art and crafts. So we might sign up for some of them. Halloween workshops if we are in a spooky mood, but I would be happy if we merely go autumnal. In any case, preparing for my favourite time of the year, has become in itself a new and exciting family activity.

Well, this post is exactly what it says on the tin (sort of): I just wanted to report that I have seen a bat, a few evenings ago. I say I have seen, but not really: I only caught a glimpse of it. It was in the evening, the sun was falling, but you still had some daylights. I opened the door, and I saw a small triangular shadow flying fast and low. Towards the light, then away. They are so fast. I sometimes see bats at dusk, especially this time of year, but I think this is the first time this year I saw one. I like bats, I am not sure why, but I'm glad I have them as neighbours.

Bookworm Problem (and Lovecraft)

I found this on one of the Facebook pages I follow. I thought it was funny. On a side note, it is the right time to read H.P. Lovecraft if you are in an early Halloween mode. Which of course I am.

Return to the local library

Yesterday, we went to the local library, to register Wolfie in the summer reading challenge, or whatever it is called. But more of that in another post. It struck me that I could not remember the last time I went to the local library. Well, I know I have been back since the pandemic, but very seldom. Far too seldom. Then it struck me that I probably needed to renew my membership. I checked in my wallet, I could not find the card. I went to the till, found out that I needed to have a document with a proof of address on it, which I didn't. So I did not renew it. I will come back. I kind of know why I don't go there as often as I used to. First, we now live far away from it, so I cannot just pop in. But truly, I think I just spend so much more time in the local bookshop since we have one. In the end, I prefer to buy books, even if it is to hoard them, than to borrow them.

Olympic Games: the BBC Way

Okay, so it is the Olympic Games. I had almost forgotten. Yesterday, we watched a few moments of the opening ceremony, which I found (little I saw of it anyway) excruciatingly dull. I'm not sure I will watch any of it. That said, there is one thing I always love of the Olympics: the BBC trailer for it. Not their coverage of the event, just the promo trailer. It's always so inventive. And this year, they didn't go half way. Seriously, after watching it, I suspect the whole thing will feel like an anticlimax. Anyway, here it is. I can't get tired of it.

87th Precinct, Isola

"The city in these pages is imaginary. The people, the places are all fictitious. Only the police routine is based on established investigatory technique."

Amateurs of crime fiction identified this quote easily: it is the disclaimer placed before the start of every novel from Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. I first discovered them translated in French, before switching to original English. Heat was the last one I read translated, suring the summer of 2006. Fittingly enough, I read it all during a heatwave, just like in the book. Before I go any further, I recommend it for a summer read, especially when it's hot outside. I still have my copy, this copy. And you can find on it a glaring mistake: the promotional paper slip says: "N.Y.P.D 87e District". I mean... what? It says in the book that the unnamed city is imaginary. Yes, it is a thinly disguised New York, Isola being Manhattan, but it's sitll not New York. I don't want to be pedantic, but surely every fan of the series worth his salt knows that by now.

Menaud maître-draveur, Félix-Antoine Savard

Emerald Hunters?

Oh the things you sometimes learn thanks to random online researches. Like a few days ago, when I stumbled on this article from the Guardian. Well, an article, more like a pictorama. It's about a yearly emerald hunt in Colombia. it looks muddy, messy and far less glamorous than sounds. And I learned that Colombia is the main producer of emeralds. Like I said, the things you learn randomly online. I only Colombia for another natural resource (you know the one), far more sinister. But this emerald hunt would make for a great backdrop for an epic crime fiction story. Emeralds make for great MacGuffins to begin with. In And what an array of characters these emerald hunters would make: some like the gold diggers of old, trying their luck, some obsessive, some maybe more prone to gain the precious green stones through any means necessary. It might have been written before, who knows. I will look into it.

Shirley Temple

No, no, I'm not talking about the actress. I mean the drink. Last Sunday, we took a family walk just for fun and stopped at one of the local hotels, where we had some drinks. Again, just for fun. They had a few cocktails and mocktails, Wolfie wanted a mocktail to be fancy and it struck me... They didn't offer any Shirley Temple. Whatever happened to this classic kids' cocktail? My brothers and I loved it when we were children, mostly because we thought the grenadine was cool and exotic. And we felt so posh drinking it. Not grownups, but like fancy. Maybe glamorous would be the right word. I think Wolfie would like it, but sadly there was no Shirley Temple on the menu. I wonder when was the last time I saw Shirley Temple available, on any drink menu. I will keep my eyes out for it.

Je me sentais souvent désoeuvré.
