Horror Hotel

 I took this picture in Brighton. More specifically, at the Brighton Pier. During what people now call Summerween, in the middle of a hot day, as I am getting more and more into a spooky mood and longing for Halloween, this is a lovely sight. As a child, I used to love to go to such place, although my parents rarely allowed me to. Haunted and cursed hotels are great settings for horror stories, by the way. I might work on one. Be that as it may, this sight gives me a pleasant shiver.

Tarot Reader

It is Summerween and I'm already in a spooky mood, preparing myself ready mentally for Halloweenso let me blog again about an old horror trope. I took this in Brighton, on the Brighton Palace Pier to be precise. I think it's the very first Tarot consultant business I have ever seen. And in a cart, like in old horror movies. Now for the record, I do not believe in Tarot reading, or any supernatural in general. That said, I often read and watched horror stories when Tarot reading is involved in some capacity. And in fiction, it's always accurate, and more to the point, it's predictions are always catastrophic and sinister. So I associate Tarot reading with gloom and doom. It was a hot and sunny day when I saw this, yet seeing this I shivered.

Seeing Carmilla

During our time in Brighton, we went to the local Waterstones. I behaved: I only bought one book. But I was very tempted to buy another edition of Carmilla. But since I own the story in at least two different books, including In a Glass Darkly, I resisted temptation. It's more or less the same edition as the one I saw last year in the local bookshop. The colours on the cover are different, darker and more sinister. If, like me, you love classical horror and you start Halloween countdown months before October, Carmilla is a great scary story to get you in the mood early. In fact, I first read it during the summer holidays on 1990. Maybe it's time for me to revisit it. In any case, I suggest you give it a go.

Dracula (a memory)

Well, the solstice is done and dusted, so days are slowly getting shorter, hopefully the heatwave should be over soon and this is thus time to... get ready for Halloween. I'm not kidding: I start preparing round this time of year. Yes, because this. But it is nothing new to me, I've always started getting on a spooky mind and preparing for Halloween months before. More than 35 years ago, if I'm not mistaken, in the summer of 1990, I first read Dracula by Bram Stoker. Before I watched any adaptation of the famous novel. I had been wanting to read classics of horror for a while and found a copy of Dracula in the local library. I blogged about it in details in a post from 2018. The memory came back to my mind recently. The novel was a revelation to me and it truly started my love of horror. I was interest in the macabre and scary stories before, but as a child my mother wouldn't let me read such things. As a teenager, she couldn't stop me.

Summerween is a thing

A few days ago, while she was doing a grocery shop online, my wife saw some Halloween articles on sale: Jack O'Lantern cushions or something. It must be a manifestation of Summerween. Yes I know the term, which is our word of the day. Do I think it's too early to think about Halloween? No. Do I do Summerween? Well, yes and no. I don't really put any Halloween decorations out, but some of my autumnal ornaments remain on display all year round. And I do long for Halloween all year, so I make a countdown to the countdown. I start reading horror stories in summertime (albeit maybe not that early) and watch horror related stuff. It helps me cope with the heat and the long days. Be that as it may, I'm glad I'm not the only one to be in a spooky mood already.

Dracula Day

 Today is World Dracula Day, as it is the anniversary of the publication of Dracula by Bram Stoker. It is by far my favourite horror novel ever and also one of my favourite novels all labels aside. I have lost count on how many times I read it. So I find it important that I commemorate today. Also, in my long countdown to Halloween, or my countdown to the countdown, today is also a stepping stone. Stoker's novel is an essential read for any horror fan ans it remains to this day the greatest vampire story ever told.

Ghosts in the Walls

Is it okay to think about Halloween already? The weather has been kind of gloomy, in a good way (but then again I love gloomy weather), so of course I am thinking about Halloween. I spend the year preparing for the coming Halloween, I love the holiday that much. I am always on the lookout for something spooky. So during our visit to the Tower of London last February, I found in their souvenirs shop Ghosts in the Walls, which I purchased immediately. Subtitled "Spooky stories inspired by real history," I had no choice. I'm not sure when I will start reading it, but it's on my to be read list for the next few months.

Walpurgisnacht!

 Beware, beware all! For tonight is Walpurgis Night, a night where witches, ghosts and devils roam the earth. And yes, it is very much like Halloween, but without pumpkins and at the end of April. If you are lucky, you might even get a chill akin to the one you can feel in the best autumn. Be that as it may, Walpurgis Night is one of the important dates in my calendar, the starting point of my countdown to the countdown to Halloween, if you will. So I intend to read horror stories tonight, if I can. I might even start writing a scary story myself, featuring a witch or more. Oh, and if you are wondering about this witch, it's a magnet a friend has on her fridge. I couldn't help but take a picture of it.

Time to grow a pumpkin patch?

 I found this meme a few days ago in one of the Halloween pages I follow. Now is the time to grow pumpkins, apparently. I am not so sure I should: last time I did was catastrophic, the slugs ate them all, no matter what I tried to keep them away. It broke my heart, it really did, and crushed my hopes of becoming a half-decent gardener. That said, I love this meme because it reminds me I am not so far away from spooky season. I just need to be patient.

Pumpkin Spice Latte at the Yellow Ladder

 I am posting again about Yellow Ladder Coffee, the coffee shop we found out in London last month and which we really liked (well, I really liked it). You can find my original post here. I had forgotten to mention one other reason why I really liked this little known chain. They offered to my wife a pumpkin spice latte, which was the daily special brew, if I remember correctly. Now, I don't drink coffee, I actually hate the taste of coffee, I don't enjoy the effect it has on me, and it's the same with lattes. However, as an autumn and Halloween lover, I am glad I live in a world where pumpkin spice latte exists. It's one of those signs of my favourite season and my favourite holiday. I blogged yesterday about a possible early sign of Halloween to come. Well, this brew is the exact same thing: a reminder of autumn and Halloween. On a cold winter day, it also makes perfect sense to enjoy such brew, if you like coffee. In any case, Yellow Ladder Coffee just won themselves a new customer.

"First" sign of Halloween?

There is something I forgot to blog about last month: during an afternoon trip to a nearby town, I stopped at the WHSmith near the station (and yes, I am well aware that it has been rebranded, but I don't care, it's WH Smith for me). And what did I see, by the till? This. These things. Halloween stuff. In freaking February. Granted, it was most likely stock from last week. All the same, it reminds me of the Halloween to come and, although I try to enjoy the present time, I do like to think of my favourite holiday way in advance. It put me in a good mood.

Post. Halloween. Blues.

Today is All Saint's Day, which is of course the day after Halloween. I used to loathe November just because Halloween was over. This is no longer the case, however I still suffer from post-Halloween blues every first of November. It falls on a Saturday today, I'm not sure if it makes it better or worse. I have a whole weekend to enjoy, yet I also miss the anticipation, the eeriness, the spookiness, the everything. Don't worry: it used to take me a month or so to get through the dreary feeling, now it only lasts a day or two. I will blog more about what I love of November, so watch this space.

Trick or treat 2025 (a report)

 This is my report on trick or treat tonight and probably my last post for Halloween 2025. It goes way too fast. We didn't many rings on our door, but apparently there was one giant group that took a lot, or so my wife told me.They were about a dozen of them, which I have never seen since we moved here  I think trick or treaters tend to swarm: when they see one going somewhere, they follow. . Especially when they see a good Halloween display. I was pretty proud of mine. I suspect there will be more and more in years to come. I will decorate accordingly, making our own displau bigger. Wolfie got a fairly decent bounty, but our little town sure isn't where I grew up, although there are a few Halloween lovers out there. There's been a few genuinely spooky houses. Now trick or treat is over, but there's still a few hours of horror movies and horror stories to keep myself entertained until tomorrow.

Une observation sur l'Halloween cette année

L'une des citrouilles que j'ai creusées cette année. Design suggéré par Wolfie. Nous avons passé l'Halloween très brièvement, ça a duré une heure environ. Beaucoup d'Halloweeneux, mais pas autant de maisons que l'an passé, célébraient, ou alors nous ne sommes pas allés assez loin. Mais je compte couvrir plus de terrain l'an prochain.

Happy Halloween 2025!

 It is midnight where I am, the witching hour, it is the 31st of October, it is Halloween. So happy Halloween everyone. We made Jack O'Lanterns, this one is the best, or at least my favourite. Wolfie and I worked hard on it, it was team work: he designed most of the jacks, I did the carving. And later it will be trick or treat. I will try to blog again until the end of the day and evening. But until then, happy Halloween again.

Halloween, autumn and reading

These last few days, as it looks and feel very autumnal, I have been reading outside as much as I can. If a neighbour sees me, I guess I look like a monk with a rather sinister mind. So yeah, yesterday I took Halloween Folklore and Ghost Stories and I read it in the garden. I took a snapshot for the blog and the countdown. It was chilly, it had just enough sun, it was quiet, the leaves on the ground and the smell just enhanced the experience for me. So yes, it is my Halloween activity suggestion for today.

THE Scarecrow

So for today's countdown to Halloween post: scarecrows. So we went to the Scarecrow Festival two days ago.And there was a lot to love and blog about, but I wanted to share the best scarecrow we saw. This one. Many were cute and inventive, but I thought not enough of them were scary. Then, walking back to our car, cutting through the woods, we got slightly lost, then quickly found our way back to the village. And we saw this scarecrow. A Jack O'Lantern as the head, surrounded by actual crows, punpkins at its feet, the evening was falling down, a quintessential autumnal image... I could have watched it until night time. Then again, maybe he'd have started moving and chasing us. This scarecrow belongs to a horror story, which I hope to write one day.

The Dracula Puzzle

I an not a fan of jigsaw puzzles per se, that said I can enjoy doing one if the image on it talks to me. So I saw this one during my last visit in a Waterstones. I did not buy it: we already have many, many, many jigsaw puzzles and we seldom play with them, even though Wolfie likes them a lot. But I regret it and I just might buy it one day, just to have a Halloween-themed game to play during the countdown and because Dracula is, as you probably all know by now, my favourite horror novel. The puzzle shows quite a few key events of the book, albeit it has been tainted by the popular image of Dracula (the black and red cape for instance). All the same, I think it looks gloriously eerie and it deserves a place here among our games.
