Comme à chaque année, tradition de l'Halloween, je partage ici la Danse Macabre de Camille Saint-Saëns. Une vieille, vieille, vieille version vinyle... Accompagnée d'une photo prise par mon père. L'Halloween, c'est aussi de la musique dans les cimetières.

C'est une tradition sur ce blogue: je partage une vidéo de la Danse Macabre de Camille Saint-Saëns quand l'Halloween approche. Assez récente et jouée à l'orgue. L'orgue étant peut-être l'instrument de musique officieux de l'Halloween, plus que le violon.

Bon, une fois par année quand l'Halloween approche, c'est une tradition sur ce blogue: je partage une vidéo de la Danse Macabre, celle de Camille Saint-Saëns. Une vidéo toute fraîche d'hier faite exclusivement pour l'Halloween.

Avant que j'oublie, il est passé minuit, nous sommes dimanche, c'est donc l'heure de la la Danse Macabre, que jepartage à chaque année. Je me suis dépêché de trouver une version avant que l'Halloween ne se termine. Elle est assez récente.

This year's Danse Macabre

As it is a tradition during the Halloween season, I am sharing a version of  the Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. This particular one is a bit truncated unfortunately, but I loved the story and narrative so much that I wanted to share it. It is both sweet and spooky, with a violin playing friendly ghost, a black cat, witches and Satan himself. In a creepy old cemetery. It's just perfect.

As it is a tradition on this blog during the countdown Halloween I share on this blog a version of  the Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. I decided to do it on early in the month and on the stroke of midnight, for dramatic effect. To accompany this post, some decoration from a nearby farm, which my wife and Wolfie visited back in October 2018. As for the Danse itself, I found this old animated version recently. Not very animated, but the images are simply gorgeous in theie eeriness. I never get bore of this tune and I am amazed at how inspiring it has been over the years.

Danse Macabre (with visual listening guide)

As is a tradition every year for my countdown to Halloween, I share on this blog a version of  the Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. I try to give a different one every year, this time I came up with one with a visual guide, explaining as you will see what every bit of music represents. I knew it as a child and remembered the details fairly well, but it is quite nice to watch and very instructive anyway. As you can't have an Halloween season without a Danse Macabre, here it is for you to enjoy for Halloween 2019.

Danse Macabre (the heavy metal version)

It is a tradition every year for my countdown to Halloween, I share on Vraie Fiction a version of  the Danse macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. It is properly eerie and, well, macabre and perfect for the season. Every year, I try to find one new and original version of it, which is not easy. I found this one, which is a heavy metal rendition. It may not be the original, but I think the transition into heavy metal is fitting. And even better: the artist made this cover just for Halloween. I don,t know this Exmortus guy/group, but I like the style. Anyway, I thought I could also add some more heavy metal on this blog (not that I'm an expert or even an amateur), so there you go.

"Des squolettes" (sic)

J'ai pris cette photo au Golden Fleece Inn à York et elle illustre l'anecdote que je vais vous raconter. (Pour ceux qui ne savent pas, il s'appelle Saul Goodfellow). Catégorie: les profs manquent parfois singulièrement d'élocution. Ma prof de musique de secondaire un, nous parlant de la Danse macabre que nous allions étudier durant l'année nous a dit: "Puis vous allez voir, il va y avoir des squolettes pis vous allez aimer ça!" Des squolettes. Pas des squelettes. Des squolettes. Phoque. Même à l'époque, ça m'agaçait, surtout que déjà c'était l'une des pièces musicales que j'adorais et qui était un incontournable de l'Halloween. C'était comme lui manquer de respect. J'y ai repensé en écrivant ce billet. Des squolettes. Ayoye!

Danse Macabre

Comme je le fais chaque année lorsque l'Halloween approche, je fais jouer ce soir la Danse Macabre de Camille Saint-Saëns. C'est une tradition que je ne veux surtout pas manquer: la Danse Macabre, c'est un incontournable de l'Halloween depuis que je suis tout jeune. Pour accompagner, une décoration vue dans l'exhibition d'hier, un fantôme, avec mains squelettiques (dans le sens propre: il n'y a que les os dessus) et chaînes. Il a même des pieds de squelettes, alors il pourrait bien danser si la Mort menait la cadence avec son violon... Je ne sais pas si j'ai trouvé la meilleure version sur YouTube, mais j'en voulais une que je n'avais mise ici avant.

La Danse Macabre

L'Halloween est aux portes, il ne reste que deux jours incluant les quelques minutes de celui-ci, et je me rends compte que je n'ai pas encore blogué sur la Danse Macabre comme je le fais chaque année. Alors la voici. Cette année, pas d'animation ou de marionnettes, simplement un orchestre, la musique du poème symphonique devant suffire pour créer l'ambiance désirée et faire fonctionner votre imagination.

Printemps qui commence...

C'est mon frère PJ qui a mis cette chanson sur Facebook, un aria tiré de Samson et Dalila de Camille Saint-Saëns. Oui, oui, il a composé des opéras aussi. Ici interprété par Maria Callas. Je n'ai jamais vu l'opéra au complet, mais j'ai entendu cet air chanté par la Callas parce qu'enfant mes parents faisaient jouer très souvent un CD d'elle où elle y chantait des arias d'opéras français, dont celui-ci. C'est l'un des premiers CDs que mes parents ont achetés. C'est un peu drôle de l'écouter aujourd'hui après tant d'années. Je n'ai jamais beaucoup associé Saint-Saëns au printemps. Enfin, le printemps est bien entamé ici, il ne commence pas, mais c'est néanmoins un aria approprié.

Midnight Dance (Danse Macabre)

As it is the case every year for my countdown to Halloween, I post here an interpretation of the Danse Macabre of Camille Saint-Saëns. This year is no exception. I was wondering which one to choose, among all the ones available on YouTube. After many hesitations, I decided to follow my heart and go for the one I had already uploaded back in 2012. The animated short movie Midnight Dance by John McCloskey. It is so atmospheric, it is autumnal, the Grim Reaper is simultaneously playful and sinister, it is so perfect for Halloween. Every time I watch it I discover something new in it. So here it is. Tell me if you enjoyed it.

A new Danse Macabre

Good news: I am alive today, whatever I was dreading yesterday. Alive and much better. So I can blog again. For today's countdown to Halloween post, I have decided to upload, as it is a yearly tradition, a take on Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre. A danse macabre is also fitting when I had the feeling I was a death's door yesterday. It was difficult to find something as good as the animation I found last year. I looked and looked, then found something on YouTube, a sort of animated puppet show by the Grim Musketeers (!), where lots of Halloween decorations are used, including a Jack O'Lantern. This is not nearly as beautiful or as professionally crafted as last year's Danse Macabre, but still, it is a charming little piece of work, and there is an enjoyable if a bit stereotypical story to complete the music. The piece is sadly truncated, nevertheless it is good enough for Vraie Fiction.

A new Danse Macabre

Here is today's first (but maybe not last) countdown to Halloween post. I blogged about the Danse Macabre before, last time was last year. If you want Halloween themed music, you need to listen to this at least once this month. It has been turned into animated movies a few times. I found this one this morning on YouTube, called Midnight Dance, made by John McCloskey. It is beautiful and eerie, with nightmarish elements that have a psychedelic feel, a good bit of dark humour (that still remains Frightening), plenty of macabre and an autumnal feel. I had to upload it on the blog. Enjoy.

Another Danse Macabre

Yes, I blogged about it before. I love Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre, it is one of my favourite pieces of music for Halloween. And I found this piece of animation on Youtube yesterday and couldn't resist. Yes, animation is a big word, as there is barely any, the drawings are pretty crude, the colours are iffy at best (and so darn pastel), but for some reason I find it irresistible. A still dance with skelettons is spooky enough, especially with that music. According to the Youtube description this comes from PBS and was made in the 80s. I used to watch British sitcoms on PBS. I wish I had seen this short film. Since I have sadly little time to watch and read horror stories, those short films put me in the Halloween mood. I hope this one does the same to you.

Le Carnaval des Animaux: Le Lion

Je sais que je mets beaucoup de musique ces temps-ci, mais bon, j'essaie de mettre ce qui me passe par la tête et d'essayer d'oublier que le temps est gris, gris, gris. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais j'ai redécouvert Le Carnaval des animaux (sur mon iPod j'ai cette version-ci). Ce n'est pas mon oeuvre préférée de Saint-Saëns (ce serait plutôt La Danse Macabre), mais c'est quand même un ouvrage qui s'écoute avec plaisir et qui réussit à être évocateur malgré ou à cause de sa simplicité. Mes frères et moi, on l'écoutait en boucle avec La Danse Macabre. Si celle-ci est une oeuvre automnale qui s'écoute en se préparant à l'Halloween, le Carnaval s'écoute bien quand l'été se termine. C'est du moins l'impression que j'ai. Le lion est mon mouvement préféré, alors je le mets ici.

Comme c'est l'Halloween bientôt, j'ai pensé mettre ici La Danse macabre de Camille Saint-Saëns. C'est sans doute l'ouvrage de Saint-Saëns que je préfère. J'aime le mélange de joyeux et de sinistre.
