"The Story of... Tea"

Quick blog post to plug a documentary I watched on Netflix and really enjoyed: The Story of... Tea. It's part of a documentary series on various drinks and food, I didn't watch any of the others, but this episode on tea was really nice. I learned a few things, about how it got introduced here in the UK and elsewhere and it's just nice to see how it is picked up and made. It remains to this day the most popular non-alcoholic beverage on earth. That's right. More than coffee. I don't know for you, but I find it kind of reassuring. Anyway, are you a tea drinker? What's your favourite brew?

Train Tea Mug

Everyone has a favourite mug. Tea or coffee mug, in my case it's a tea mug. And I sometimes used it to drink milk too, although never with tea. Tea is never, ever drunk with milk in it, it spoils the flavour and weakens it. So this is my favourite tea mug. I blogged about it before. I'm presenting its other side today. My wife bought it for me in the online shop of the National Railway Museum in York. It brings together two of my favourite things: tea and trains. And it states that I am no second class tea maker.

Rooibos (Four O'Clock)

During my last time in Québec, I discovered the tea brand Four O'Clock. I guess they picked up the name to sound more British. Fun fact: I seldom drink tea around four o'clock. I don't think many people here make it a regular thing either, not like the ritual you see in movies. But I digress. I always like to try new teas. Although, to be honest (and precise), I did not drink any of their tea brews per se. Instead I bought a box of their rooibos. I love rooibos, because you can actually drink it in the afternoon, say four o'clock, and you don't have trouble to sleep later. And it taste almost like black tea.  Oh, and it is South African and my wife's father is South African, so yeah, what's not to love.

Tea Collections in a Bookshop?

During my last time at home, I went ao couple of time to the local Archambault. I used to love the bookstore chain, I am not really a fan anymore: it now sells too much of everything besides books. It used to feel like a proper bookshop, now it feels a bit tacky. So I was not surprised when I noticed they were also selling tea boxsets. One from an English company, of all things, the English Tea Shop. Very fancy. I live in England, so I thought it would be pointless to buy teas from England, even though my parents don't have much tea at home. So I didn't. And then, I thought I was being a grouch. Because buying tea and books together kind of makes sense: you get something to read and you have some tea with it. I mean drinking tea and reading a book are activities that go so well together. They are blissful, even. So yes, if there is anything else besides books, book bags and bookmarks that is suitable to buy in  a bookshop, it might actually be tea.

Irish Breakfast Tea

The thing one can find sometimes, away from England. During my last time in Québec, I found a box of Twinings' Irish Breakfast Tea. Twinings is everywhere here, but I cannot remember any Irish breakfast blend. It's all about English Breakfast (well, of course). As my parents don't have much tea, I bought a box. What I did not drink there, I brought back here, so I had my last teabag of Irish Breakfast tea on Saint-Patrick's Day. To be honest, my palate is not sophisticated enough to taste the difference, but apparently it is stronger than English Breakfast. Anyway, I'm just glad I could drink something Irish for breakfast, on that special day.

Samovar

I took this picture in Vienna at the hotel we were staying. It is of course a samovar, and so samovar this is the word of the day. They had it in the dining room for breakfast. It is, as far as I can remember, the very first samovar I ever saw. Certainly the first proper samovar I ever used. I was so grateful to find out that they do tea properly in Austria. Well, at least in one place in Austria anyway. And making tea with this made me feel all posh and fancy, like a true gentleman. It's also very exotic. Anyway, I must have drunk three cuppas every morning, just for the sheer pleasure of using this samovar. But the tea was nice too.

Russian Breakfast Tea

One of the many nice things about visiting my parents, is that I can plunder their tea stocks and find really nice brews. My mother does not like tea, my father only drinks it sporadically, so they have always more tea than needed. So anyway, long story short, I stumbled upon this brew from Mariage Frères, ironically enough a French tea company. I hadn't had a Russian type tea for a long while, so I had to try this Russian Breakfast Tea. Nicely smooth and strong, absolutely perfect.

Bonfire Toffee Tea

Silly me: it was Bonfire Night yesterday and I forgot to mention that I found out a tea brew perfect for the occasion: Bird & Blend's Bonfire Toffee Tea. I got it as a freebie last year, with my pumpkin tea order. I don't like smoky tea generally, but this one has just a subtle smoky flavour, so it was not invasive. And it mixed nicely with the toffee flavour. I had it the morning of the 5th of November, sadly I forgot to order more for this year. I got a freebie, but not this one. But hey, if you find a Bird and Blend shop, or wishes to order some, it's the perfect tea for November.

More Halloween Tea

For today's countdown to Halloween post, let's talk about tea. I am a bit of a weirdo for an autumn and Halloween lover: as I don't like coffee, I don't care about pumpkin spice latte. Instead, I go for autumn teas, which are just as suitable. So recently, I was looking for new pumpkin and autumnal teas available here in the UK' and I found out that Whittard has a Spiced Pumpkin Chai. Just my kind of thing. We had a Whittard in town, but it closed down more than 15 years ago.I promise to revisit the next Whittard shop I come across and stock myself.

Pumpkin Spice Chai

I love tea, but I love to drink tea even more in autumn. Hence, I love autumn tea. So I was happily surprised to discover that Teapigs has its own blend of autumn tea, the Pumpkin Spice Chai. And it's naturally caffeine free as well, so this will be my go-to hot drink in the evening. That should last me until Halloween, maybe after. Which is fitting, as it is a pumpkin tea. And if you have more suggestions for autumn teas, please let me know in the comments.

Spiced Pumpkin Pie

As for every autumn (because yes, it is already autumn now, even though it is way too warm at the moment), I stocked myself in the Spiced Pumpkin Pie Tea from Bird & Blend. Some people drink Pumpkin Spice Latte, I don't drink coffee, so I pumpkin flavoured tea is my autumn and Halloween tea. So, I bought a big pack of loose leaf tea. I received it and a few freebies, including this tea bag of the same brew. If you feel like making it yourself, you now have the whole list of ingredients.

Holy Cow Tea

As you may know, I am always on the lookout for new tea companies. I have also been trying to increase my intake of loose leaf tea, because it tastes better and I think is healthier. Not to mention fancier. So I recently discovered at a local fayre a new tea company, Holy Cow Tea. The very nice staff were giving samples to try, so I promised to stop by their stand and I did. Their range is a bit pricey, but I indulged myself because I needed something of quality and I love to support small local businesses. I use their Emporium Breakfast when I need a solid brew to start the day, which is always at the moment. So that's my new breakfast tea for now.

A Perfect Cup of Tea (according to Anthony Burgess)

If you have been following Vraie Fiction for a while, you probably know that Anthony Burgess is my favourite writer. I recently read a post from the Anthony Burgess Foundation about his opinions on how to make a perfect cup of tea. For any tea drinker, tea making is serious business. And I was shocked to say that this is one area where Burgess and I have different opinions. Because not only does he think one should add milk (jfrom what I understand just a bit of it, as he had his tea very strong), but he also thinks one should add sugar. That is borderline heresy for me. Nevertheless, I do agree that loose leaf tea is far better than teabags. And it is always interesting to read Burgess' talk about cultural staples such as tea, because of his wide knowledge on the subject (or, it seems, any subject he talks about). Anyway, my idea of a perfect cup of tea is the following: pour bpiling water into loose leaf tea, let it infuse for two or three minutes, according to your taste, let it cool down a bit, but not too much, the drink by itself or with something sweet (that's all the sugar you will need). What's your idea on the perfect cuppa?

My Idea of Fun

I found this meme a few days ago, at total and I wanted to share it. I think I never shared it before, I hope I didn't. In any case, here it is. A good book (sometimes even a bad one would do), a warm blanket (or two, or three), some tea, that's indeed my idea of fun. Chocolate is optional, I can do with or without.

Starbucks' Matcha Green Tea Latte

This post is a warning for those who might have the bright idea to try something new at Starbucks. Because yes, against my better judgment, we went to the local Starbucks this weekend. My wife suggested that I go for something seasonal, instead of keeping it safe and just having tea. I don't like tea with milk, something they always add in their special menu teas. I don't like Starbucks much in general in fact, I find some items on their menu tolerable, that's it. But I followed my wife's advice, again, against my better judgment. And I ordered a Matcha Green Tea Latte. The horror, the horror. Never drank anything so vile. As I explained to her when she asked for a review: "I can brew the same thing at home. I just need to mow the lawn, then throw the grass in boiling water." Wolfie found it so funny that he could not dirnk his hot chocolate without spitting it. So I think it deserves to be a new great unknown line. And keep away from Starbucks and their Matcha Green Tea Latte.

Two Spoons Tea

I recently learned the existence of a new tea company, or at least one I didn't know existed until, well, now: Two Spoons Tea. I love to try new teas and see what's on the offer. Because tea is, as you know, my favourite non-alcoholic drink. I will need to check where I can buy their products. I could of course do it online, if needs be. Or just suggests to my wife that she buys me some of their brews for my birthday. In any case, I will keep my eyes out for Two Spoons Tea.
