Bonfire Toffee Tea

 Silly me: it was Bonfire Night yesterday and I forgot to mention that I found out a tea brew perfect for the occasion: Bird & Blend's Bonfire Toffee Tea. I got it as a freebie last year, with my pumpkin tea order. I don't like smoky tea generally, but this one has just a subtle smoky flavour, so it was not invasive. And it mixed nicely with the toffee flavour. I had it the morning of the 5th of November, sadly I forgot to order more for this year. I got a freebie, but not this one. But hey, if you find a Bird and Blend shop, or wishes to order some, it's the perfect tea for November.

Tonight is Bonfire Night. Which means there will be fireworks tonight. After twenty-five years in England, I am just starting to get used to it. My wife gets excited about fireworks, but then again, she's English, I guess fireworks in November is part of her culture. I on the other hand am not a fan of fireworks, however I love the smell of bonfire smoke in the night (or any time really). It's just nice, especially in autumn. So I came to appreciate this early November tradition as part of my (fairly new) appreciation of the month. Because yes, November is still autumn.

The smell of bonfire in November.

Tonight is Bonfire Night. After living about twenty years in England, I sitll cannot get used to the noise of fireworks, which goes through the whole month. I am not the biggest fan, except for one thing: it also means this month is the month of, well bonfires too. So it smells of bonfire all thought November as well.And I love the smell of bonfire.I love it at any time, but especially in November, where it mixes with the cold air and makes it so very soothing. This is one of the many reasons why I now love the month.

Bonfire Night (and what else in November)

Tonight is Bonfire Night. Not my favourite special day, I quickly get bored with fireworks, which seems to be all it is about, when you think of it. In this country, it is the big event in November, at least the biggest celebration in November. Unfortunately, it is also set early in the month. After that, all we are left with here are the fireworks. But hey, I do like the smell of bonfire if nothing else. That said, there are other fun things to do in November in this country. The English Heritage mentioned its top five. Here we have my wife's birthday in a few days. That should keep us entertained. And you, what are you planning to do this November?

Les feux d'artifice

Ce soir, c'est "Bonfire Night", ou Guy Fawkes Night, ou peu importe comment on l'appelle. Je ne m'y suis jamais vraiment habitué, en plus de vingt ans de vie ici. Je me sens toujours un peu étranger face à cette célébration. Mais concrètement ça veut dire qu'il va y avoir des feux d'artifice tout le mois de novembre ou à peu près, surtout ce soir. J'ai pris cette photo l'année dernière. Des feux avaient été lancés dans une école pas loin et on pouvait les voir un peu de notre jardin. Elle est très mauvaise, mais que voulez-vous. Moi ce que j'aime, ce n'est pas tant les feux d'artifice que l'odeur de feu de bois que l'on sent partout en tout temps durant le mois de novembre ici. Je trouve que ça a quelque chose réconfortant.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November... You know the rest. Tonight is Bonfire Night. Well, in spite of the pandemic and the lockdown that started today, the English did not forget. As I am typing this, I can hear fireworks going on nearby. I guess some things never change, no matter what.

Le mois des feux d'artifice

Novembre, en Angleterre, c'est le mois des feux d'artifice. En théorie, ce n'est que le 5 novembre, le soir de la Guy Fawkes, ou Bonfire Night, que l'on célèbre avec des feux, mais ça commence toujours quelques jours avant et ça continue jusqu'à la fin du mois, au moins. Et si on ne les voit pas (ou peu), on les entend et on les sent. J'imagine que ça donne un certain air festif à novembre, mais je ne m'y suis jamais habitué.

Bonfire Spiced Latte

Here is a quick anecdote about English culture. We went a couple of weeks ago to our local Costa, which is quite a nice little place, in spite of being just a Costa Coffee shop. My wife likes to take seasonal drinks, so she ordered a Bonfire Spiced Latte. Apparently it is an old Costa classic. It struck me then that this was what the English found typically "seasonal": for them, the most quintessential autumnal event is Bonfire Night. It is quite ironic, as from what I could see on their website, it is no longer on the Costa now. They have already put up their Christmas menu. So come Bonfire Night, my wife might not be able to watch the fireworks sipping a Bonfire Spiced Latte. Personally, I don't want, I don't drink coffee in any variety. But it's still quite funny.

Les feux après 10 heures

Le mois de novembre en Angleterre, c'est le mois des feux d'artifice. On peut aimer ou détester. J'aurais eu tendance à aimer: ça donne de la couleur à un mois gris et une raison de s'amuser. Cela dit, ces temps-ci, j'aime moins: mon fils a peur du bruit qu'ils font, d'une part. Et puis on a eu droit, après le 5 novembre, à des feux d'artifice après dix heures du soir. Ce qui est apparemment illégal. Légal ou non, notre fils n'arrivait plus à dormir et avait peur par dessus le marché. Résultat: maintenant les feux d'artifice, c'est très peu pour moi, merci.

Bonfire Night

Tonight is Bonfire Night, as in "remember, remember, the 5th of November..." and I'm sure you know the rest. Well, it cannot be easily forgotten: there has been fireworks nonstop every night since the beginning of the month and it has scared our little Wolfie. This year, I will be glad when this night will be over and I hope not to hear any fireworks until the New Year. Even though I like fireworks and love bonfires, especially the smell of the smoke in the cold November air. The smell of bonfire smoke is actually what I prefer of this night. If it was only of me, I would ditch the fireworks and just keep the bonfires. It's called Bonfire Night after all.

La peur des feux d'artifice

Avec les feux d'artifice qui se font voir et entendre depuis le début du mois, nous avons découvert une chose: notre petit loup en a peur. Peur du bruit plus que des feux eux-mêmes. Quand il les a vus vendredi dernier du jardin, il sourit pour un temps, puisil a demandé à rentrer. Hier, ça a sauté de partout, très fort, il s'est mis alors à trembler comme une feuille. Ça nous a inquiété pour un temps: notre fils n'est en général pas de nature très timorée. Ce soir et demain, il y aura sans doute beaucoup de feux d'artifice, on se prépare donc à le distraire du bruit extérieur. Et on a décidé de ne pas sortir pour les voir.

Premiers feux d'artifice

Je ne les ai pas vus, mais je les ai entendus hier: les premiers feux d'artifice du 5 novembre. Parce que ce sera la grosse affaire durant les prochains jours, tout ça à cause d'un certain individu. C'est du moins le prétexte (les origines de la célébrations étant bien entendu païennes). J'imagine que ça met de l'atmosphère dans un moment de l'année assez morne autrement, mais parfois ça m'agace un peu.

De nouveaux mystérieux feux d'artifice

J'ai pris cette photo un certain 5 novembre. Je l'utilise ici parce qu'hier on a entendu des feux d'artifice pas loin. Enfin, ils étaient peut-être loin, c'est difficile à dire, puisqu'on ne les a pas vus. Aucune idée de la raison pour laquelle il y avait des feux d'artifice hier. Il y en a de manière récurrente et épisodique en Angleterre et à chaque fois, je me demande la raison pour laquelle il y en a et quelle est la raison pour laquelle les Anglais on un pareil engouement pour les feux d'artifice.

First fireworks

I blogged recently about fireworks here on Bonfire Night. Well, yesterday we went to see my wife's university friends (we spent the night there) and celebrate Bonfire Night with a home made fireworks display in their back garden. There were lots of children, in fact they were outnumbering the adults: the three kids of our hosts, the two of my wife's other uni friends, then of course little Wolfie. Our son was not the youngest: there was a six months old baby girl there as well. So it was Wolfie's first direct and conscious experience of fireworks. He really enjoyed the colours, but the noisy and smoky ones he did not like and after a big bang that really sounded like a gunshot we had to watch it from inside because Wolfie was crying a lot. It does take a lot to scare him, but this was a very loud noise. All the same, he really enjoyed his time there.

The month of fireworks

I try to find virtues to the month of November, and I have to say that in England it has at least one: it is the month of fireworks, because of Bonfire Night. Or Guy Fawkes Night as it is often called. Not that I am a big fan of fireworks, or of Guy Fawkes (frankly I always felt very foreign to it) but it does give a bit of colour and excitement to an otherwise grey looking time of year. And, while the big night is on the 5th of November, firework displays last the whole month and beyond. Strangely enough, I have not seen any so far, but I did smell yesterday smoke in the air. Fireworks have a number of downsides which I will try to blog about soon, but at least it makes November here... different.

Orages ou feux d'artifice?

Fait assez rare à ce temps-ci de l'année, même ici en Angleterre: il y a des prévisions d'orages électriques dans la région. En novembre, c'est un peu tard. Il a plu toute la nuit d'hier, mais je n'ai pas entendu de tonnerre. Ma femme m'a cependant dit que oui et mon père également. Cela dit, il a aussi cru entendre le bruit non pas du tonnerre, mais de feux d'artifice. En novembre, ici en Angleterre, comme je lui ai expliqué, c'est fort possible. Alors ce pourrait aussi être des feux d'artifice.. Ou même les deux.

Novembre anglais en une photo

Si j'avais à publier une photo pour décrire novembre en Angleterre, ce serait une comme celle-ci, une de feux d'artifice, à cause de la Guy Fawkes, qui est en train de se produire maintenant. Au moment où je tape ce billet, j'entends déjà pleins de feux d'artifice. Et ce sont des initiatives personnelles, pas les feux organisés par la municipalité, lesquels viendront plus tard (lire: tard) dans la soirée. J'ai fait l'expérience de la célébration pour la première fois en 1999, lorsque je suis arrivé ici pour étudier. Je ne m'y suis jamais complètement habitué, allez savoir pourquoi. Pourtant, comme je le bloguais hier, ça rend novembre moins déprimant. Je me demande si, parmi mes lecteurs, il y en a qui ont vécu le cinq novembre ou le vivent en tant que résident de l'Angleterre et ce qu'ils en pensent.

Time for fireworks

Tomorrow is Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night as it is also called. It means that there will be a bonfire involved (duh), but also fireworks. In fact, the fifth of November is an excuse for fireworks display. And it has already started: for a week or so you could hear them as soon as it goes dark. I have to say, as a foreigner, I am not used to it yet. But it's nice to see fireworks, it gives some colours to the grim nights of November.

Des feux d'artifice pour novembre

La Guy Fawkes est terminée, cela dit il y a encore des Anglais qui font sauter des feux d'artifice: cet après-midi alors que la nuit était déjà tombée, on en a entendu (mais pas vu) au travail. Je soupçonne les Britanniques de faire ça pour tromper la grisaille du mois de novembre. Je peux comprendre, quoique les crépitements finissent par me lasser (c'est parce qu'ils sont bruyants). Cela dit l'odeur de la fumée après, je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais j'aime bien. Il y a souvent une odeur de fumée dans l'air du dehors en Angleterre en novembre et ça a un certain cachet.

More fireworks

If there is one thing an outsider needs to know about Bonfire Night, is that it truly lasts all November. November in England is in fact the month of fireworks. To sum it up, there are more fireworks tonight, coming from everywhere apparently, every back garden. And I have a scared cat hiding under the bed. I like fireworks and I love the smell of their smoke in the November night, but tonight my wife and I find them particularly menacing.
