White Cake
Shortly before new year, I saw that I had to find a way to use some eggs and milk and, since I had plenty of sugar and juust enough flour, I decided to bake a cake with Wolfie. I asked him to choose the cake and he said a white one, not a chocolate one. I was actually surprised, but hey, maybe he thought it would be fitting for January, or winter, or both. So anyway, I used the original recipe of my maternal grandmother for chocolate cake, without the cocoa and with added vanilla for the icing and the cake itself and this is the result. It does not look good, in fact it was another catastrophy cake. But it tasted really nice. Maybe because Wolfie is generous with the sugar, maybe because I added a lot of butter to the icing. In any case, it tasted much better than Wolfie's birthday cake, which looked great, but made me feel sick.

Blueberry cake: I found my gastronomical purpose
But I am slightly worried about it. Because I am not very good at making cakes. I pften make catastrophy cakes. And blueberries are not cheap here and come in small quantities. I don't mind buying them, I do regularly when they are available, but I wouldn't want to waste good blueberies in a catastrophy cake. Then again, I want to make that cake one day.

Jack of all trades...
She may be true, but I never developed them fully. I am a specialist in almost nothing. I am a medievalist, but never taught medieval literature. I know how to make mayonnaise and I am very good at it, but otherwise I am a limited, even terrible chef. My cakes are often so terrible that I even gave them a name: catastrophy cakes. I do think I am naturally talented as an actor, but I never developed it enough to make it a profession. And I have a beautiful singing voice, but again, I haven't really worked on my voice to grow it it into a professional one. I never even took the risk to become a failed actor, a failed baritone, a failed writer...
Well, at least I can make good mayonnaise, I can sing and given the proper preparation I can go on the stage and be a character. I like the extended version of the expression, which cheers me up: "Jack of all trades, master of none, though often times better than master of one". I think I might ask this one to be written on my tombstone.

Stocking for Christmas
That said, I need to stock food for Christmas. Here is a list:
-Alcohol. Red wine (for me), white wine (for my wife) and beer (for me). Maybe also something fizzy to make it special. Since she does not drink much and we will not receive many guests, the quantities will be modest. Still, I need some quality stuff and enough to make me go through the days when every shop and pub will be closed. And we have to try mulled wine.
-Food. Veggie turkey and veggie everything, as I am the only meat eater here and it's not worth buying for just one person. I might, might gather enough strength and patience to try myself at pork pies, but somehow I doubt it.
-Desserts. I want to make more cupcakes and try to make another yule log.
-The usual extra but essential: cranberry sauce, which I will most likely make this weekend.
Oh, and if you have time, ô my readership, I was wondering if you could answer the questions raised in this post. Or you might want to read this post, which might be more interesting than reading a grocery list.

Musing on a Chinese wedding
I was the best man and I had to give a speech. The agonising writing process and its delivery would need a whole post for themselves, I will just say here that, after swetting water and blood, it was a tremendous success (I know, I know, I am vain and pleased by flattery). The Chinese banquet was appropriately huge and just as appropriately exotic (I can now say that I ate jellyfish and shark fin's soup, and fish with its head still on when it was on the plate). You have to know Chinese people to be discover Chinese gastronomy. My brother had a suit for the civil ceremony, but wore red and gold Chinese clothes with an embroided dragon and phoenix for the Chinese part of the celebration and the bride changed dress something like a thousand times. They do nothing small and their extravagance is methodically organised.

Nobody Does It Better
Lovely expression, "nobody does it better", especially when it is directed at you. It is also the title song of a Bond movie. I do not like the movie much, but absolutely love the song. My wife and I considered using it for our first dance, before settling for something else, something that was less macho narcissistic. All the same, Nobody Does It Better is great for an ego boost. I wonder sometimes what I am really talented at. I have good analytical skills when it comes to literature, I do have a good ear and a nice singing voice, I also have some natural acting skills, but I am not the best at any of these, not by any stretch of the imagination. Ah well, maybe I am thinking too much at the approach of the end of another year of existence. Getting old(er) always gets me in a thinking mood. I'll just leave you with the song...

-----------------------------------------------
Another piece (or slice) of triviality. I baked a vegan chocolate cake (without dairy products or eggs), which was a success (sort of) as it wasn't a catastrophy cake. It didn't taste that great, a bit too...vegan, maybe? That said, I made a non-vegan icing, which improved the taste considerably.
