February Ending

So if anyone noticed, we are the last day of February. I say if anyone noticed, because this year, it's been more difficult to be aware of time passing. This February would have been otherwise a very banal, uneventful February: it's not a leap year, for one, it has only 28 days. Now, it is a February during the plague, the pandemic, it is a February like we never really had them. That said, mine has been pretty good, all things considered. I generally don't like this month (for more details, see this post from 2017), the only virtue I give it is that it's short, but this time it has been all right: not too cold, not too wet, not too depressing, not too... Februarish? Anyway, that was mine, how was yours?

The daffodils of the Wallingford Bookshop

I found this picture on the Facebook page of the Wallingford Bookshop, maybe my favourite independent bookshop in England. They placed paper daffodils and floral paintings at the window that almost look like the real ones. Springtime is already here for them, at least in their bookshop window. I cannot wait to go back there again. Of all the shop windows, the ones I prefer are local bookshop windows, whatever the season.

"The Ultimate Hunt"

What you see here is the cover for the recent Italian edition of The Last Hunt by South African crime writer Deon Meyer. One of my favourite crime writers and one of my favourite novels of his, for many reasons, which you can read here. Now I wanted to make to observation about this cover: 1)it looks like an Italian fumetto (comic book), and by the way it would be great to have graphic novel adaptations of Meyer's books. 2)The title, L'Ultima caccia, sounds very dramatic, far more infact than the English or the French title of the same novel. Not merely the last hunt, but the ultimate one. Is it me or do Italian titles often sound more dramatic? Something to do with the Italian people perhaps. In any case, it is a pretty cool book cover.

Je me trompe?

Backgammon

Recently, I learned that a friend of mine taught her nine year old daughter to play backgammon. I thought that was very fancy, and it reminded me that I once play backgammon myself, decades and decades ago, probably when I was around my friend's daughther's age. It was only for a few games against a friend of mine who had a set. I remember nothing of the rules and strategy, in fact I don't think I ever understood it at all. My friend was very competitive and he made us discover new board game only to beat us to it, my brother and I. I have always loved board games, even though I rarely play them anymore. I don't know if backgammon would ever be one I'd even like to play, as I prefer games that have elements of role play, beside I think I'd still be rubbish at it, but I'd love to own a set just because it has a certain sleek elegance.

A toddler's Clockwork Orange

Today is the birthday of Anthony Burgess, author of A Clockwork Orange. To celebrate the birthday of my favourite author and the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie adaptation, I thought I would share something funny. No, this series of books (there are more covers to find, which I might uploadone day) does not exist, but I wished it did. I'd genuinely be happy to buy them. I think it would be a hit.

How do you organise your bookshelves?

This post is sort of a followup to my post from yesterday. Anyway, I read recently a post from Penguins Publishing titled How do you organise your bookshelves?. My answer, which I gave on social media and I am giving here, is simple: "as little as possible". It is sort of true, and a new great unknown line, but I oversimplified to make a good punchline. The truth is, there is some order in my madness, which I detailed in this post: by genre, by author, by height and in order of how much I like them. And you, how do you organise yours?

To read until the feeling passes...

I found this meme online recently and thought it was very funny. It is also very true of me, although I do not read nearly as much as I should. But every time I think it is time to clean and tidy, I decide that it is time to read or reread a book. And as my wife would say, the books are often part of the mess, just like in this image.

A paratrooper?

During one of our walks outside, we saw this on the ground near our house. We think this is one of the toys of the littleboy living nearby, who is a few months older than Wolfie. My wife and I think it is one of these toys paratroopers, but without his parachute. My brothers and I used to have them as a kid and I loved them. Obviously, we will not bring this one home, in fact I might knock at the little boy's family's door and tell them if it is his lost toy. But it got me thinking that I'd love to have a few of these to play with Wolfie and I might ask my wife to buy me a set of paratroopers for my birhtday.

"Bonbon clair"

The return of the family's trains

My father promised it to me and it finally happened: like last year, he finally set up the family's LGB trains (one diesel, one with a steam engine) and the railway network in the basement. He was also very happy to show it to his grandson and Wolfie and I had lots of fun watchingthe network running via Facetime. I hope my dad keeps them there for a long time, because it is more fun watching these trains than watching a movie, I kid you not. And it is even more enjoyable with an enthusiastic little boy, the third generation of my family to love model trains.

The ideal library

My wife got an online copy of Country Life, so can Wolfie could have a look at the tractors. There was this picture of the South Library of the Athenaeum, which I share here. My wife said: "I just found the ideal for you." She knows me well and this deserves to be a new great unknown line. I'd love to spend a few afternoons there reading, although the beauty of the place might feel overwhelming.
