Devon cream tea at Fat Lemons

It is Saturday and as a tradition I am going to plug some food from a restaurant, a café or a pub. This is the third time, no less, that I plug something from Fat Lemons in Totnes. But they do make delicious food. And among the many items on their menu, a Devon cream tea, which can be eaten as breakfast or dessert. You can see it on the picture: lemon zested scones (heart shaped) with clotted cream and jam, accompanied with breakfast tea. I had the tea, my wife had the scones as a late breakfast. Then I ordered some more scones for myself, to go with the tea and a sort of dessert. I would have loved to have this today.

The omelette of Fat Lemons

I blogged about a month ago (in fact almost a month ago) about an item of the menu of Fat Lemons in Totnes, which was my big gastronomical revelation during our holidays there. Well, okay maybe not, I had others, but it was one I did not expect to love so much. It occurred to me today that I had forgotten to promote the menu of a restaurant or a pub this past weekend, like I try to do, so I thought I would do it today, to cheer my readership up on a probably dreary Monday. Ironically enough and be warned now: Fat Lemons is only opened a few hours on Monday.

I had this omelette, made with North Devon organic cheddar and free range eggs on our second visit there. It was too late for breakfast, but I hadn't eaten so I had this as a brunch. It was one of the best omelette I ever had, in fact far better than the omelette I ate in Paris earlier on this year. This is THE thing I love about Fat Lemons: they do so well the simplest dish.

The grilled cheese of Fat Lemons in Totnes

Well, as I am back from the holidays, I thought I would start plugging the food of one of the many restaurants, pubs and cafés I have been to during my stay in Devon. It is Saturday, after all, and plugging something from the menu of a place I loved is a weekend tradition on Vraie Fiction. It was not an easy choice to start with, because there were so many great places. But in the end, I decided to go for something from the menu of Fat Lemons, a vegetarian/vegan café that was maybe my gastronomical discovery. We went there twice, and twice it was nothing short of amazing. The first time, I ordered the simplest option one can order in a restaurant: a grilled cheese sandwich and a carrot soup. It was maybe the best grilled cheese sandwich I ever had: old, mature Devon cheddar and chutney for the filling, perfect grilled, not too melted but warm cheese and the soup just made it perfect. Perfectly simple, perfectly filling, perfectly delicious, perfect comfort food.
