More Thunderstorms?

I blogged last Thursday about the stormy weather we had then: wind, rain, hail, and finally some thunder in the afternoon, followed by heavy showers. Well, they are forecasting more storms today. I am actually really happy about it, as I love storms. May is not particularly a month for storms, it's a tad early for stormy weather, but like I said I don't mind. I hope it's a proper thunderstorm, with plenty of lightning... And I hope I will be inside and dry when it happens. If it happens. Because it wouldn't be the first time a storm is forecast and doesn't happen. Anyway, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

First Thunderstorm(s)

So far this year, the month of May has been, well, weird. Weather-wise, it has been downright schizophrenic, worse than April. It has been hot last week, but suddenly temperatures dropped dramatically. Like, beneath 15 degrees Celsius. And stranger than this: we've had our proper thunderstorm(s) yesterday. Usually, storms happen when it is hot and humid. In the morning, around 11:00, we started having rain, wind, and finally hail, then it got sunny again. Not warm, but sunny. As we were waiting for Wolfie to get out of school, we suddenly heard thunder. It then started pouring down. It was surreal. But I'm not complaining: I far prefer this to warm weather. I find it way more comfortable. And it's very atmospheric.

Hailstorm

Last weekend, on Saturday we had our first storm of the year, with thunder and everything. And not just any storm: a proper hailstorm. It is fitting for March, a month that tends to have bad weather. Even downright nasty weather, one would say. But I actually don't mind storms, as long as I can be dry and warm inside. I love how powerful and dramatic storms can be, I thoroughly enjoy them. I can spend ages just watching the rain or, in this particular case, the hail fall down, with the thunder rumbling. So yes, I enjoyed the one we had last Saturday and I hope we have more in the coming days.

Ironic Weather

It's been kind of stormy these last few days, because of, well, this. So yeah, Herminia has given us rain, wind and even a bit of hail. On Monday, during the school run, it was pouring, windy and hailing when I walked with Wolfie to school. At the moment he walked it, it suddenly stopped and everything went calm. The parents were all dumbfounded. One of the mothers said how typical it was that now the weather was calm. I said: "Don't worry, when it is time to pick them up in the afternoon, of course it will get stormy again." She laughed. And I think it deserves to be a great new unknown line. That said, in spite of my pessimistic views, the afternoon school run was much quieter: no rain, no hail and barely any wind to speak of. Still, walking to the school felt like an epic journey that morning.

Terrible March

I mentioned last Friday that March had been particularly nasty that day. Well, it did not quieted down: it has been cold since then and on Sunday it had snowed in the night, it rained in the afternoon, then we had more rain. Beware the Ides of March. I say it every year, it has always been pure wisdom. Like the first of September is for me the beginning of autumn, I consider the first of March to be the beginning of Spring. But since I am a child, I don't think is a lovely season, when nature comes alive again. For me, nature wakes up after a long sleep and is temperamental and nasty like a hungry bear after its slumber. I love March though. I love what's in March. I even love its more terrible aspects, its hail and rain and changing weather. There is beauty in it. Nevertheless, it's far from a nice month.

Friday Doom

Well, that is perfidious March for you (beware the Ides of March). Before walking home after work, I had to make a detour to visit a house (because my wife and I are thinking of moving) and to go there I had to walk through streets I am not familiar with. Dark streets. Nothing special so far, nothing too sinister. But as I was walking, it started raining. Then it hailed. And it was windy and nasty. I managed to regain my composure when we met the estate agent, but all my way to the place, I was in a very bad mood, like if it was Doomsday Friday or something. After the visit and a short walk in the then furious hail, my wife and I were completely soaked. Way to start the weekend. But let's look at the bright side: now warm and dry inside I feel very much relaxed and the weekend can only get better. And if it was unpleasant to feel, I do think miserable weather is impressive to watch, especially rain.

May Hail

Whatever I said about Summer coming recently, I take it back. May is still a cool, even cold, nasty Spring and it actually looks sometimes like an autumn that is ending. We could still be wearing heavy jumpers and winter coats with scarfs and if it was not for the green in the trees it would feel like October or even November. Okay, maybe not November but definitely October. An October like I love them. Except that we are in May. And a May like this, especially when it is near its end, well, it kind of sucks.

And today, we had hail. A lot and a lot of hail. There were two showers of rain, one that was loud but short, and a second one where it poured for what felt like ages. I took these two pictures at work, one when it was pouring down, the one on top during my lunch break later. You can see how big the hail is. Like chunks of salt. And, while the second picture is blurry, taken from the first floor window at work, it also gives you an idea of how dramatic the hail falling was.

First summer storm?

It happened this afternoon: a huge, powerful, violent storm, with hail and thunder. The sky was dark, so much that it look like night was about to fall. We had storms earlier this year, in fact very early in the year, but this is the first one that looks and feels like a summer storm. We are at the end of May, it is still springtime, but it feels already, at last I should say, that summertime is coming. I often think that summer is baptized by a thunder storm. I wonder if that was it today.

Hail and Thunder... in January?

There are moments, even after years in this country, when English winters amazes me. We have had a very miserable weather since the beginning of January (and since December actually), rarely downright cold, but always cool and wet. So yesterday, in the middle of the afternoon, there was a hail storm. Nothing outstanding yet, but a few minutes later, I could see lightning and thunder. The quintessential summertime weather, but on a cool winter day. In January. In England. I have seen electric storms as late as late October, November sometimes, but I don't remember witnessing any in January. I should not complain, at the same time it was minus 47 Celsius where I come from.
