Arc-en-ciel (2)

The Rainbow Cake

You might remember that back in 2022, I blogged about a rainbow cake, which is quite popular round here, especially for children's birthday parties. It's basically a cake made of many layers of different colours. We first discovered in the café section of a petting zoo. We went there last weekend and lo and behold, the rainbow cake was available again. I bought one piece for Wolfie and one for me. It tastes delicious, but it's very filling: Wolfie can never finish his share and then gives the rest to me. I felt quite full afterwards, and not in a good way. All the same, I will have another one next time we go there.

Rainbow Cake

Last weekend, we went to a petting zoo for the afternoon. Wolfie quite like this place. We had lunch there, then by the end of our stay we had a little snack with a school friend of his and his friend's family (met by chance), who were having an early dinner. I had noticed a rainbow cake and I was curious about it, so I bought one piece for my son and one piece for my wife and I. It was delicious and filling: there is a layer for every colour, and between each layer a bit of icing. Wolfie could not finish his piece, so we brought it home so he could have it for dessert. They were selling a box of rainbow cake making kit, which I might buy next time we go there, even though it's probably a pain to bake and assemble. Anyway, we had lots of fun there, but the cake really made the day.

Arc-en-ciel

The rainbow of the Wallingford Bookshop

Quick bit of news about the Wallingford Bookshop: I learned that they have their own website. I also learned that they do deliveries, but from what I gathered from their presence on social media, the owners does it by bicycle. Just my luck, I am a bit far, beside I promise myself not to buy any new book for a while, until I reduce the numbers on my bookshelves andmaybe until the lockdown is over. Beside, there is my own local bookshop I wish to encourage first. And they also have added a rainbow to the shop window. I cannot really appreciate it directly, but it is lovely to see it in picture all the same. I hope I can revisit it one day.

A look at the Abyss

I hope I grabbed my reader's attention with the title of this post. I was looking for something that fitted the subject. It is utterly and shamelessly melodramatic, but look at this picture. I found it in an old folder, from the trip to Quebec in Easter 2010. It was taken from the top of Montmorency Falls. It is quite a sight. Earth, water, air, all clashing together, and the light rising from it in a rainbow. I wonder why I didn't blog this picture before, but thought it is better late than never. There is not much to say really, I just wanted to upload it.

August melancholy

I have written here (in French) that there is something sad about August (Jazz blogged on the same topic here): it's the end of Summer, end of holidays, Autumn is showing itself and we are remembering that time is passing. I witnessed this today: some leaves have already changed colour and while it is warm, it is definitely no longer hot outside. It smells like the end of Summer, I feel like I used to feel when I was a child around that time of year. Even when I don't go to school anymore (not as a student anyway), I have the same feeling of impending doom (I know, it's melodramatic but how else would you qualify the end of the holidays?). It was hot and sunny most of the day, and all of a sudden it started raining heavily. It didn't last long, just enough to give us a rainbow. I took a picture of it, as you can see. It doesn't cure my melancholy, but it's nice to look at.

A view from the window

Today's storm gave us a rainbow. Not for long, as it started raining again and it got quite dark. It was actually darker today than this evening, now that the sky is clear. But we did get a rainbow, which I don't appreciate as much as dark, violent storms, but still find enjoyable. When I took the picture, it was already fading.

Okay, that's slightly trivial for a topic, but you know how uneventful my days sometimes are.
