Construire un château en famille

Cette photo a été prise à Berry Pomeroy Castle, dans le Devon. Je la partage ici parce qu'elle sert mon propos. Aujourd'hui, mon fils a décidé qu'il voulait construire le château que son oncle maternel. Mon beau-frèrenous a laissé depuis la naissance de notre fils pas mal tout les vieux jouets finis ou pas de sa fille, qui est dans la vingtaine maintenant. Et de temps en temps, notre petit loup se décide à jouer avec. Donc aujourd'hui, notre fils a tenu à ranger sa chambre, pour faire de la place au gigantesque château que l'on a dû tenter de monter, tant bien que mal, avec un succèes inégal. Ça ressemble assez à cette photo, mais c'est quand même une belle manière de passer le temps.

La fresque de Berry Pomeroy Castle

Cette photo a été prise à Berry Pomeroy Castle, dans le Devon. Je ne me rappelle pas des détails, mais c'est une fresque qui date de la fin du moyen âge/début de la Renaissance. J'aurais dû la partager à l'Épiphanie, parce que c'est une scène représentant l'Adoration des Mages. Mais comme je ne veux pas attendre un an avant de la mettre ici, je la partage ce soir.

Des oiseaux dans le toit

Photo prise dans Berry Pomeroy Castle, dans le Devon. Un château médiéval avec beaucoup de cachet et qui a la réputation d'être hanté. Or, selon mon expérience, s'il est hanté par quoi que ce soit, c'est par les oiseaux qui squattent parfois dans son toit. On le les voit pas ici, mais on les entendait voler et piailler de partout. Ou alors ils n'ont pas peur des fantômes. Je ne sais pas pourquoi j'y ai pensé aujourd'hui, mais je m'en suis souvenu et j'ai pensé que c'est un des aspects qui fait son charme. Peut-être que c'est parce que j'ai rangé des affaires au grenier aujourd'hui, je ne sais pas.

Time to visit a castle?

This is one of the many pictures I took of Berry Pomeroy Castle, near Totnes in Devon. The most haunted castle in England, apparently. One of my favourite castles, of all the ones I have visited, and I visited many, being a medievalist. Stuck in the middle of the woods, you cannot get more atmospheric than Berry Pomeroy Castle, ghosts or no ghosts. I don't think for a second it is haunted, I do not believe in ghosts, but I am sure many visitors bring their own ghosts to it. We do not have such castle nearby, but we nevertheless have at least one castle that is not a very long driven distance. Last year, my wife and I were considering going there with the Ticklers, but the pregnancy and the busy time looking for a new home prevented us to do it. So I wonder if now would actually be the right time for an excursion in a castle. It would be a great time out, if nothing else.

"C'est un vieux château..."

Vous voyez sur cette photo Berry Pomeroy Castle, dans le Devon, le château le plus hanté de l'Angleterre paraît-il. J'ai blogué sur le château ici. Berry Pomeroy a été jusqu'ici l'un de mes châteaux préférés de l'Angleterre, hanté ou non. Et je ne crois pas qu'il soit hanté, soit dit en passant. C'est un endroit charmant. Mais enfin bref, quand je l'au visité, j'ai pensé à cette vieille chanson dont je ne connaissais que le refrain quand j'étais enfant, parce que ma gardienne me le chantait quand j'étais tout petit. Ça me donnait des frissons de peur et de bonheur à la fois. Il y avait une image détaillée d'un château médiéval dans le dictionnaire Larousse de mes parents et pour moi c'était ça, le vieux château hanté de la chanson. Mais quand j'ai vu Berry Pomeroy, c'est comme si le château de mon imagination était là devant moi. Je vous jure. Enfin bref, c'est l'Halloween bientôt et je pense à ça. J'aimerais le revisiter.

The most haunted castle in England

For today's countdown to Halloween post, I have decided that I would write a true haunting post. Sort of. I have to tell you right now that I am very skeptic regarding any claims of the supernatural and don't believe ghosts exist. I don't watch real haunting programs or care much about psychics or mediums. That said, I love local legends, old folklore and all sort of ghost stories. For me, "true haunting" are the stuff to inspire fiction, the fictitious haunting that are so more fun.

When my wife and went on holidays in Devon, we discovered that ghosts were part of the tourist industry there. Every town and almost every place had its own local ghost, every tourist shop had plenty of books and booklets about ghosts of Devon or "true tales" of the supernatural (like this one). Strange term, by the way, true tale. A tale is never true, even if it is based on a true story. The moment it becomes a tale, it ceases to be. So this is how we learned about Berry Pomeroy Castle, which is allegedly the most haunted castle in England. As the castle is near Totnes where we were staying, we decided to go there by taxi.

Berry Pomeroy Castle is situated in the middle of a wood and is absolutely a delight to see and visit. The surrounding woods themselves are worth a visit. Its construction dates back from the Middle Ages, but more was built during the Elizabethan era. Legends said that it is haunted by a number of ghosts: the White Lady, the Blue Lady (who apparently lures visitors to their death by making them fall off a tower) and the ghost of Margaret Pomeroy (imprisoned by her jealous sister Eleonor, who may also be haunting the place). The stories often blend together, so we don't know how many ghosts there really are. In one of the many booklets I had bought at that time, it was said the castle has an overwhelming aura of malevolence when you visit it. That is absolutely ridiculous. I knew about its ghostly history when I went there and I thought it was a charming place. The taxi driver on the way back told us that some filming crew who came to shoot a documentary at the castle from dusk till dawn called for taxis in the middle of the night: they could not stand the place anymore, finding it far too spooky for their taste. It must be very eerie when night falls, I am sure, but I think the filming crew was victim of confirmation bias. In any case, we did not see any ghost, just a beautiful castle. And if you are visiting Devon, you would be doing yourself a great disservice not to visit it out of fear of ghosts. Haunted or not, Berry Pomeroy Castle is a beauty to behold.
