L'éléphant de Robin Hill

 Photo prise dans l'Isle of Wight, dans le parc de Robin Hill. C'est bien entendu un (faux) éléphant africain qui a l'air de la vraie affaire. Robin Hill, c'est comme un immense terrain de jeu pour un enfant comme Wolfie, où on a l'impression d'être dans un safari quelque part en Afrique plutôt que sur les côtes anglaises. Il faisait chaud comme en Afrique cette journée-là aussi,  ça ajoutait à l'illusion. Wolfie a un petit côté africain (son daddad vient de là), alors c'était parfois comme s'il découvrait ses racines.

Amarula

The things you find sometimes when you tidy up. My father-in-law, who is South African, offered us a couple of years ago, after a trip back to his homeland with his English wife, a rather imposing bottle of Amarula. It is a liqueur from his country and I don't know anything about it apart from that. I also rarely drink liqueur, but I find it truly shameful nevertheless that we haven't tried this one yet. I think is because we found out my wife was pregnant shortly after we received it, and I did not want to drink it alone. It would not have been fair or advisable. Be that as it may, I really want to try it now.Not that I am particularly fond if liqueurs, but I love this bottle and its label, with the charging elephant. And I know one should not judge a drink by the label on its bottle, like one should not judge a book by its cover, nevertheless... It's one cool really label.

"Indian Sandalwood" or the exotic aftershave

Since I am in the UK, I had to change aftershave, as the one I used to buy back in Montreal is not sold anywhere here (I generally buy local, see). So last year, I found out in John Lewis an aftershave from Crabtree & Evelyn called Indian Sandalwood. I have no idea what's so special about Indian sandalwood, but I thought it smelled nice enough and there is an elephant on the label of the bottle. Like one carrying people and cargo. I guess the elephant is meant to carry sandalwood. I wonder if I was not a sucker for a clever marketing ploy and I just chose the aftershave for its label.

Jungle Animals?

I took this picture last year. One of my colleagues had bought this for her son. Something struck me and being sort of academic about these kinds of things, I mentioned it right away: "This display is all wrong: elephants, giraffes and lions live in the savanna, not the jungle, and tigers don't even live on the same continent!" I could have added that the elephant seemed to be an Asian one. Anyway, one of my colleague teased me about this and said: "I can imagine you refusing to buy your son such a set, because it's not accurate". I would, but would also tell him that these are not all jungle animals. Anyway, I thought that what he said was funny enough to be a great unknown line. Even though I am right.

Un casse-tête exotique aux multiples facettes

Je télécharge une nouvelle photo prise au York Castle Museum. Le musée avait un bon nombre de jouets datant de toutes les époques et ce casse-tête m'a fasciné. Bon, ce n'est pas un casse-tête très élaboré: des blocs forment une image. Ou en fait des images: des éléphants d'Asie au travail, une caravane de chameaux (oi de dromadaires) et sans doute autre chose sur les autres faces des cubes. L'amateur de casse-têtes dans la famille, c'est PJ, enfin c'était l'amateur quand nous étions enfants. Moi, j'aimais les casse-têtes complétés, quand on pouvait voir l'image. Et celles-ci sont assez cool. On n'en faisait déjà plus dans mon enfance, des choses de ce genre.

Ah oui, et il y a un vieux toutou panda dans le coin. Objet assez intéressant également.

Un authentique oliphant

Cette photo a été prise à York Minster. Il y a à peu près un an, j'écrivais un billet à propos de l'empereur franc Charlemagne. Lequel sera pour moi pas tant associé à la figure historique que la figure légendaire décrite dans La Chanson de Roland. Et enfin donc récemment lors de mon séjour à York, j'ai vu ce cor en ivoire, aussi appelé oliphant/olifant (je préfère écrire oliphant). Il appartenait à un Viking, mais c'est La Chanson de Roland qu'il a évoquée en moi: l'oliphant étant bien entendu utilisé par Roland, tant pour appeler son empereur que pour frapper un ennemi.. Je suis médiéviste, alors je ne pouvais passer ça sous silence. C'est un artefact superbe.
