Eerie chill

This is tonight's countdown to Halloween post. I took this picture in the woods of Derbyshire, around this time of year, when my wife and I were visiting some friends of hers. Evening was falling and it was cool, borderline cold. There was, so to speak, an eerie chill. It has been feeling exactly like this these days. We are indeed living the perfect autumnal weather: just dry and cool enough. When evening falls, it is chilly. And it is so very atmospheric. One could think of a ghost or a monster showing from the shadows. We often think of horror stories set in dark castles, old mansions or of course haunted houses. Stories that work on claustrophobia. But a road in the woods when evening falls can be just as good as a setting. And when the air is like this, just autumnal and cool, you end up with a chill, but not only because you feel cold. You have a pleasant shiver of fear.

I just spent 5 days surrounded by such eerie beauty. The British Isles and Ireland have a particular green lushness.
