I Love Rock n' Roll

Well, I do. And it is Friday and I didn't upload a song on this blog for quite a while. And I got this song in the head. I am a Philistine and I know zilch about famous singers, rockers or not. But I have it in the head, and I love Joan Jett's voice in this (and I love much more her take on it than the original version, is it only me or does her voice have more machismo?). So here it is, my Friday treat.

I've actually been listening to a lot of Runaways/Joan Jett and the Blackhearts stuff lately. It's amazing, because most folks don't know that this was a cover! That might have something to do with the fact that the Arrows were never a very popular band, but I think it has just as much to do with the fact that Joan took the machismo of the tune and turned it on its head. Her delivery is flawless, and she MADE the song her own in the process!

It's actually way superior to the original. The Arrows sound like oversexed teenagers who got lucky and are trying to act all tough. Joan Jett sounds like a young woman who knows what she wants. With her, the song has more meaning, or at least more emotional impact.
