Derek Strange's Wisdom

As you know, I have been reading The Blue Flame by George Pelecanos for Noirvember. So far, so great. I have been happy to renew with his protagonist, PI Derek Strange, who is now older and even wiser than he used to be. An old man, but he still has a sharp mind. One passage in particular struck me about his keen sense of character, and I wanted to share it here: So here it goes: "But Lennox had inadvertently told Strange something about himself. Anyone who read a newspaper, didn't have to be the New York Times, shoot, anyone who read anything these days, even a bad airport novel, was smarter than the average American." Nice observation, and nice subtle bit of meta too.
