Root beer

This weekend, we quickly went to the local sweet shop, which is no longer local as it is part of a chain. It had plenty of American imports of sugary products that we find nowhere else in this country, including A&W's root beer. I don't remember when I first drank root beer, I think (but I'm not certain) that I was no longer a child, but be that as it may, I have a vague memory of tasting far too sweet and being absolutely unrefreshing. I think drinking root beer back then was borderline edgy, as if you were more daring than if you were drinking any other soft drink. Be that as it may, I wanted to try it again, to see if it tasted like I remembered and because A&W's root beer has the reputation to be the best. Where I come from at least. I'm not sure it's the original recipe, or this brand truly is the best root beer there is, because it did not taste nearly as bad as I remembered. To my surprise, it was actually rather pleasant, like having a cream soda.

  1. I remember when McDonalds here used to serve root beer - oh, how we loved it! Sooo long ago. My sister and I have a tradition of ordering a case of A & W Diet Rootbeer whenever we visit one another (here or in Australia. But these days I can taste how salty & bad for you it is!! Losing the innocence (& palate) of youth...!

  2. I love root beer every once in a while! It sure has a distinctive flavour. The first root beer I had as a kid was A & W root beer while visiting relatives in Regina.
