Meg and Mog

Here is another children classic I want to plug as today's countdown to Halloween post: Meg and Mog by Helen Nicoll, illustrations by Jan Pienkowski It’s not a scary story but it's a relevant read because: 1)it has a witch and a cat as its protagonists and 2)it’s set on Halloween night. The first story is anyway. We first got the book as second hand from Wolfie’s uncle (my wife‘s brother). Wolfie grew quite fond of it (must be Mog the cat), but ripped off a few pages. And by rippin off a few pages I mean turn the book into shred, to my horror. So we bought this one with board pages. As for the book itself, it’s simple, quirky and, being written in the 70s, sort of psychedelic in a kid friendly way, with a good but sometimes clumsy witch whose spells do go wrong more often than none, a stripy cat with an attitude (well, a cat), a snowy owl (who quickly becomes a series' regular), a cauldron that makes a gross breakfastand a gathering of witches. It's great fun.
