Tesco calls them bagels...

This weekend, my wife and I went to shop in Tesco. In the bakery section, there were these so-called bagels. I could not believe it. They looked so surreal, I had to take a picture. My wife said I was embarrassing. I replied: "They are embarrassing to sell them." This is, I think, a great unknown line. Then, I published the picture on Facebook, because such travesty has to be named and shamed. I wrote: "Tesco calls them bagels. I call them cardboard doughnuts." This deserves to be another great unknown line. Anyway, as a guy from Montreal, who survived starvation thanks to quality bagels, these are a crime against gastronomy.

  1. That's right -- those are just regular buns with holes in them. Nowhere near real Montreal bagels!

  2. As a native New Yorker, I have never found a authentic bagel in the Pacific NW. They all seem to be some kind of roll dough that they make all their other bread products from. If these bakeries don't want to take the time to do it right, they shouldn't bother with these fake bagels. A real bagel is placed in boiling water after the dough rises. That's what gives it a crisp exterior &slightly chewy interior. The hard water in the NE also contributes to the authentic taste & texture. Anyone who thinks these chain store abominations are real bagels, has ever experienced eating a freshly baked NY or Montreal bagel hot off the racks. Using roll dough & poking a hole in the middle doesn't make it a bagel. I started making my own out of desperation.
