Books VS ebooks

I received as a gift from my parents in law a Kindle. That was... a year ago. I have not used it yet, to my great shame. I am old fashioned in some ways, in reading it is one of them. I love books as objects and while I do not judge a book by its cover, I find it nice to buy books with appealing covers. And you don't really have this in e-form. This physicality. But I will not be close minded and it is a very generous gift, so I will use it. And my bookshelves are crammed enough as it is anyway.

That said, I saw this meme on Facebook and I thought it was hilarious. But not only was it funny, it was also revealing: books as a form, with all their paper and clunky format, remain relevant today, if only because they are simpler to use. And they have a charm ebooks do not have. Not yet anyway.

  1. I thought I'd feel the same. I love books, always have, always will. I got a Kindle maybe 3-4 years ago (when they actually had keyboards) and I never looked back. I love having all those books with me at all times. And it's so much easier to travel with a kindle than with the 4-5 books I used to haul around.

But mostly? I realized that for me it's the content, not the container. And I save lots of $ with ebooks, which frees up more cash for graphic novels and art books. Win-Win

  4. Funny cartoon! I prefer to read actual books too but sometimes the print is just too small! That's the big advantage of an e-reader -- you can adjust the font size.

  5. And now, 4 years later, I wish I'd stolen that great meme for my post today! LOL! Thanks for the reference back to this post, Guillaume.
