Family farewell

Tonight, we had the last evening with my parents for their visit. They are going back to Québec tomorrow morning. I feel like it was too short. They helped us tremendously tidying this house and making it more homely, they also helped us cleaning and folding our clothes. I am embarrassingly bad folding clothes, my wife might be even worse believe it or not (although she'll probably deny it), but my mother is a natural clothes folder. And it was so great to see them with little Wolfie and interacting with him. He really bonded with his grandparents, giving them his best smiles. So we will miss them for many reasons. It struck us that even though we have many friends nearby, we are far from our family and sometimes it makes things a bit more difficult and a bit more exhausting. In any case, we are all feeling a bit melancholic tonight, Wolfie included.

Deon Meyer and me

I mentioned the crime novel Icarus by Deon Meyer recently and I intend to write more about it in the upcoming weeks. I have started reading it and I wanted to share a trivial details that I found quite funny. One of his characters is named Francois Du Toit (his name should be written François with a cedilla, but nevermind, I guess he could not type it with his keyboard). He is a wine farmer and has a six months old son named... Guillaume. Reading this today, it made my day. I wonder why  he chose that name. It is fairly common in the French speaking world and I understand Deon Meyer is francophile. Now in recent years I have occasionally been in contact with Mr Meyer via social medias, so my wife suggested that he may have been subconsciously influenced by me... Or it is a complete coincidence. All the same, I thought it was quite funny. Especially since I am also the father of a young child. I wonder what's in store for my namesake.

Pine Cones for Christmas

There was a Christmas market today at the hotel where my parents are staying. They have one every year at the end of November, which I find a tiny bit early, but we go there every year all the same. I usually buy a decoration or two, if I can find some that look nice. In a stand, they were selling among other things hand made pine cones meant to be like Christmas tree baubles. I thought they would make a nice addition to our Christmas tree, so I bought two of them, because they were two for five pounds. So here they are, to put you in the spirit of the season.

About trains again

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York. My parents are coming back from the city today, where they visited the museum. Dad found it quite interesting, but then he loves trains, like me and all the boys in the family. And we are all boys in my family (three brothers). For us, trains are something like grand-scale toys. I am not so sure, albeit she loves traveling by train, finding it, like I do, comfortable and pleasant. I hope we can one day visit the NRM all together, with my son who I am fairly confident will love trains as much as I do. Anyway, they are on their way back today, by train of course. Thinking about it, I wonder about my next train journey, like I often do, but now I know that next time there will be little Wolfie with us. Which makes our future ventures, wherever and whenever they may be, all the more exciting.

Daddy's boy?

Apparently, little Wolfie is daddy's boy. This is what one of the waitress of a local café said to my wife when we went there with my parents. Because he stopped crying when he was handed to me, she thought it was a sure sign. Her son was like this as a baby, she said. My wife reluctantly agreed, but later on was almost relieved when Wolfie cried and my cuddles and soothing words did nothing. And my mum managed to calm him down from one of his tantrums by rocking him and telling him soothing words... wrapped in a blanket she had knitted herself for him. So he's also grandma's boy and mummy's boy. It all depends of the circumstances, I think.

Rebellion jumper

I already mentioned this jumper back in 2015. My wife bought it from Rebellion Beer as a birthday present and I have grown quite fond of it. In fact, I could say it is now my favourite jumper. I am not certain why. Or rather, I know: it is warm, it is comfortable, the colour is dark blue which I love, it has pockets so it is practical and it has a lovely badge on it, a badge that indicates that I am a real ale drinker. I don't like fashion, I do not care about elegance, but this piece of clothing makes a statement that is worth making. Okay, in the end it's just a comfy jumper.

Ma mère me l'a appris hier.

Snoopy's Wisdom

As it is still autumn (at least in theory), I decided to share a comic strip from Peanuts, featuring Snoopy and his often quiet and bird talking friend Woodstock. Snoppy has always been my favourite character, I love his mythomania and his attitude. Sometimes, he can also be very wise, as in this strip when he describes autumn. it is indeed a transitional season, when you have to keep moving. Not like Woodstock to avoid leaves, but to keep warm. Anyway, I thought it was a good way to describe my favourite season.

Futility Frog

I found this meme on Facebook, a friend of mine put it on its wall and I thought it was so funny, I did the same. In fact, it was so funny that I thought I might as well share it on this blog as well. There are many morals to this story: 1)when it comes to humor I am very easy to please, 2)Facebook and other social networks are rather mundane and often downright stupid.

Recto Verso

Wolfie's attitude (an anecdote)

My parents are visiting us and have finally met their grandson. So they are spoiling him. Today, as we walked downtown, my mother was worried that Wolfie might get cold, thinking the blankets, hats and his thick suit were not enough, so she bought him on the spot a winter suit/coat at Jojo Maman Bébé. Then we put it on him. Of course, our baby son started crying like a river the moment we put the suit on. As my wife explained to his grandmother, Wolfie hates being dressed or undressed. Once he has his clothes on or off, he is happy, but he hates the time in between and the whole fuss around it."He prefers blood tests," said my wife. It surprised my parents, but it is true. Maybe because he had so many when he was born, our son became rather indifferent towards them. In any case, what my wife said deserves to be a new great unknown line.

Ten years of Casino Royale

It was ten years ago yesterday that Casino Royale was released in the UK. I have been a James Bond fan for many years and was waiting to see the film eagerly. After the controversial casting of Daniel Craig as James Bond, then two very promising trailers, I had high expectations for it. I first watched it in Liverpool, with my then girlfriend now wife. And my expectations were met. In fact, even my wife, who is certainly not into James Bond, really loved it. So I wanted to celebrate its ten years anniversary on Vraie Fiction. I will show two clips of the movie: the introduction of Craig as the new Bond (here beginning as a MI6 operative), so the extended pre-title sequence, then the opening credits, with the movie's song. If you have never seen the movie, you will I hope see why Craig is so awesome in the role. And it is just such an exciting introduction to a movie that completely renewed the role and the series.

P'tit Loup

Icarus on the reading list

My readers know that I am a big fan of South African crime fiction writer Deon Meyer. Well, I saw that I had not yet on my bookshelves his novel Icarus, which has been released in October 2015. It is one of the few books of Meyer that I have yet to read to be up to date. As it has now been released in paperback, I decided to order it now. I considered asking for it as a Christmas present, but then saw that the story is set during Christmastime, which prompted me to buy it now, so it will be among my Christmas reads this year.

Oedipus with a Northern accent

Here is a cultural announcement I have been wanting to give since a few days already. It is a great piece of news I got from the Anthony Burgess Foundation: Christopher Eccleston will play Oedipus in a BBC Radio 3 production of Anthony Burgess's adaptation of the most famous play of Sophocles. More details in RadioTimes and in Manchester Evening News. Now for me this is not merely a dream coming true: it is a dream I never even dared to have. Anthony Burgess is my favourite writer and it is always great to have his work featured on stage, TV, cinema or on the radio. I love Greek mythology and I have re-discovered Greek tragedy in recent years. As for Christopher Eccleston, I have been following his career since I first saw him in Cracker. I love him as an actor. I actually thought even then that he should play in some adaptations of the work of Anthony Burgess, should they actually get produced. Both writer and actor being Northerners, I thought it would make sense, that they had similar sensibilities in their respective craft. So that is such welcomed news. So anyway, the play will be broadcast on the 26th of February 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Anthony Burgess. Watch this space for further news and mark it on the calendar. It is going to be amazing.

Too early for a Christmas ale?

This is what I had been asking myself when i bought yesterday this beer at Marks & Spencer. December is not here yet, in fact we are not even half way into November. Christmas is, of course, everywhere in the town center, but I never managed to get in the festive spirit so early. Especially not here, since there is no snow or no winter to speak of. All the same, I was curious about this beer, so I bought it and made it my poison for yesterday. It might not be the right time yet to drink it, nevertheless it is my kind of ale, dark as it should be and with plenty of flavour. I think I will make it one of my festive beers. Which sort of justifies yesterday's puschase: I was testing it.

Of books and bookcases

I took this picture At the National Railway Museum of York and I am publishing it here because it illustrates the topic of my post. If I remember correctly, this was not merely part of the exhibits, it was actually a reading area in the museum. I wish there were such reading areas in train station nowadays. Reading in trains and stations is one of my favourite intellectual pleasures in life. Let me say another thing about this particular one: I want this bookcase. There I said it. The bookcase we have here is ok, I mean it does the job, but while it looks nice it does not have such character as this one. I went yesterday with my wife and son to the local bookshop, very briefly as it was getting late and we had other things to do. I thought I would behave myself and just look at the books on the shelves there. Well, I did not: I bought loads. Some for me, some for my son, because it important to interest children in reading at an early age. And I need more books to read in trains and elsewhere. Even though my own bookcase is almost full.

The green fleece from Mountain Warehouse

I blogged about this Mountain Warehouse fleece before. I bought it ridiculously cheap during a sale. My wife hated it, because she hates green as a colour, especially for clothes. I love green, although I must confess this one does not have the nicest kind of green, if that makes sense. It may not look good, but it is the best fleece I had in ages: it is comfortable, just warm enough when temperatures get cold, there are pockets on the side for stuff (very useful) and well, it is one of my favourite piece of clothing. In fact, it is so comfy and practical that now even my wife nicks it from time to time! The fleece often ends up in the wash because it receives pukes from little Wolfie after feeding and it is another reason why we love it so much.

You Want It Darker

Well, what a crappy week it has been. I learned today that Leonard Cohen passed away. A great singer that was also a true poet, which is now a rarity among singers and an almost extinct breed. Incidentally, he was also a fellow Montrealer. At 82, his death may not be tragic, it is nevertheless extremely sad. In his honour, I am sharing today You Want It Darker, the song form his ultimate album. More than a artistic testament, the song had an uncannily prophetic ring. Today more than ever, I think that Leonard Cohen was the last Jewish prophet.

All I am going to say about this

Like many people in the world, I was both appalled and disgusted by the election of Donald Trump as the president of the USA. So the US has voted in office a loud mouth, bullying, ignorant, White trash jerk... and partially, for some of the voters, because he was all that. More worryingly, he was backed, and will bring to the White House with him the ultra-religious right, among others his VP, who is by any other name a Christian mollah and even worse than him. Angry, did I say? Outraged, yes. But, I will try not to panic, as a certain David Wong suggested. I do think this is potentially catastrophic news, the free world might not be so free if Trump and his cronies have their way. But like Wong said, we can do something and I remember how I was feeling before 2008 about American politics. It got better. So I will say one thing, from my favourite TV drama The Wire, a quote from Poot I read again today. It is not a fancy analysis, but it sums up my feeling about the whole election: "World going one way, people another yo." You can see the scene in context here. In essence, this is what happens. The US is going another way. Backwards.

Question existentielle (294)

First frost

This is what I saw this morning. The first official frost of the year. I even heard that in some places nearby, they had seen a bit of snow. There was no snow here, not a sign of it, but the temperatures were below zero and almost wintery. Are we going to finally have, here in England, a proper winter? I had lost hope the last few year: news channels keep repeating, every single year, that it will be the harshest winter on record, or something of the sort, but it never happens. We always end up having a mild, sometimes cool and always wet season. But this, so early in November, this cold and dry temperature... It is most welcome.

Monday with the family

As I had (and still have) a lot of leave to take this year, I took today off to spend time with my wife and my son. It was a family day. It still feels new to call such free time family time and to think ourselves as a family, not only a couple. So today we went to a "play and learn" group my wife goes to sometimes with little Wolfie. He gets weighted, he spends time with other kids and the mummys sing nursery rhymes and socialize and so on. I was the only dad there. It was a nice moment to spent and little Wolfie enjoys it a lot. Then we went downtown for lunch. My wife and I had been reluctant to spend long period of time out with our son, as he gets tired and impatient and tends to cry at some point. But, like the mother of blonde Tickler told us: "Don't worry about this: babies do cry; they are babies, that is what they do. If some people cannot accept this, sod them." These are words of wisdom and a new great unknown line, so we decided to follow her advise. Wolfie did cry, but we are getting the hang of it and manage to calm him down. So anyway, that was my Monday with my family.

Clue/Cluedo for November

I don't know why, but today I thought of the board game Clue, or Cluedo as it is called here in the UK. When I was a child, my brothers and I spent so many weekends playing the game. As it was PJ who received the game on his birthday in October, the novelty had not worn off in November, when I remember playing the game the most, and sometimes expanding it into live action, improvised crime stories, often set in an English mansion (for me the Cluedo mansion was THE mansion), with plenty of secret passages. It helped me get through the dreary days of November... And get over the Sunday blues! And today I thought that it could be a nice activity to spend time on a November Sunday.

Is winter coming?

There are days like this, I could almost love November. It is something I feel in the air: it is suddenly cold, but cold like snow could fall at any time. I can smell the snow, almost. So far we are having a chilly November, chilly enough so I feel like winter is coming. I don't want to put my hopes up, I have been disappointed in the last few years. But I think that maybe, just maybe this year, if it goes on like this, we might actually have a proper winter. year after year they forecast one, they have to get it right sometimes.

Clementime!

I do this lousy word play every year or almost, but it is important for me to remind everyone, at the beginning of this dreary month that is November, that the clementines are available and at their best. Little balls of citrus sunshine smelling delicious and an excellent source of vitamin C. It takes two clementines to make one portion of your five a day. I bought these ones at Marks & Spencer, like I do every year, as I think they have the best ones. I do miss the big boxes I used to buy in Montreal, but there you go. I had my first two clementines a few minutes ago and I can still smell their perfume on my fingers.

Time for fireworks

Tomorrow is Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night as it is also called. It means that there will be a bonfire involved (duh), but also fireworks. In fact, the fifth of November is an excuse for fireworks display. And it has already started: for a week or so you could hear them as soon as it goes dark. I have to say, as a foreigner, I am not used to it yet. But it's nice to see fireworks, it gives some colours to the grim nights of November.

The new dad's happy moments

Sometimes, being a new dad turns the most anecdotal thing into a big reward. Two things made my day recently, one of them I did not even witness! First, little Wolfie has started smiling. And he does smile a lot. Including to me. I know for certain now that he recognizes me and sometimes asks for my attention. And smiles when I interact with him. Like the sweetest, most wonderful smile. The second thing is that the mother of the blonde Tickler recently told my wife that Wolfie is looking more and more like me. And that really made me happy too.

The high standards of the local bookshop

There is a little anecdote I have been wanting to share on this blog, but never had the occasion or the time yet. A few weeks ago, I briefly went to the local bookshop, where I have a membership. As I was giving my family name so the woman at the till could identify me on the system and register the points made with my purchase, she then said my first name. She said it perfectly, like a French speaker would. That might sound like nothing, but in England, this is close to a first for me. I said: "You said Guillaume perfectly, how did you do that?" She replied, with a faux smugness: "Well, we have high standards." I thought that was quite funny and deserves to be a great unknown line. There are many, many reasons why I love the local bookshop, this is a new one, having staff members able to say a French name like a native speaker. High standards indeed.

Apprendre (encore!)
