Black Moon

Apparently, tonight is  a Black Moon, which is apparently a rare lunar event. Again. After the strawberry moon this summer, the blood moon last year, the blue moon when there is one... Well, like blood moon, the Black Moon sounds deliciously sinister. Which has to be a particularly good time for werewolves, or to read stories about them if you are not one or don't have one handy. Even though this is not a full moon, I am sure lycanthropes must change shapes on the night of a Black Moon. And, fittingly enough, tonight will start the official countdown to Halloween, so all the more reason to celebrate the Black Moon rising. And to watch this space, as I will of course blog about Halloween in the upcoming weeks, almost exclusively.

Warming up on stage...

My brother Andrew took this picture a year ago or almost at the TNM in Montreal, when we went to see a brilliant stage adaptation of Moby Dick. Of course we could not take pictures as the play was performed, but the cast did their warming up exercises on stage, in front of the audience that was coming. We could see them bonding as well as getting in shape for what was a very physical performance. It was a way to maintain team spirit and also to develop a connection with the audience. It reminded me of my own experience as an actor. It also actually reminded me of some of the warming up exercises we do in Krav Maga. Funny how two different disciplines, from two different walks of life, can share such similarities. Maybe practicing the Israeli self-defense system makes me a better actor and I have not been able to use it for the stage. Or maybe I am just seeing similarities when there are none. I haven't been acting in a long while and I miss it tremendously. Watching the actors like this before the play, I felt a pang of envy.

Question existentielle (292)

Back to work...

Today I was back to work after my paternity leave. It was not as bad as I thought it would be when it comes to workload, but it was very difficult to leave Veggie Carrie and the little wolf this morning. And the day was long. That said, my colleagues welcomed me back with enthusiasm and such kindness. They all congratulated me and all seemed so enthusiastic about our new baby, especially the women. Oh and they gave me a voucher from Mothercare as a welcome back gift. So even though I am back at the Pit of Hell, being a new daddy allows me to alleviate to the downsides of working when you miss your new family.

Time for hearty food

This is what I had for lunch in a local café, the nearest one we could find nearby: a salmon and broccoli (and dill) quiche from Toppings Pies. My wife had a vegetarian quiche. It was delicious and the quiche was exactly what I was looking for. In fact, we enjoyed them so much that we bought two for tomorrow's meal. I intend to try more of their products. If I had a quiche today, it is because autumn is finally cool enough (albeit not ideally cool) and especially autumnal enough to have heart-warming comfort food. In other words, it is now time for hearty food.

D&Dr in autumn

I know I blogged about it before, but today I thought about our Dungeons & Dragons games played and set during autumn so I thought I would blog about it again. To accompany this post, a cover from Dragon Magazine (number 220), which I thought looked fittingly autumnal. It is a great mysterious picture from David Horne. Apparently the title is "Only the Light Keeps Them Back," but I think it truly needs no title to convey both danger and atmosphere. Like I mentioned in my post three years ago, the bulk of the first adventure we've had in the campaign my brothers and I created was set in autumn. We played it mostly in autumn and our characters were living it in autumn, in a dark and remote forest not unlike the one on the magazine cover. It was called the Harles Forest and it was an amazing setting for a first adventure. Especially in autumn, when you had the imagination to picture yourself there.

Now last time I went to Montreal to see my brothers, we played a bit of a catch up game of an hour or so, no more, to see where our characters were at since we finished our most important story arc. We merely discussed what our characters had been doing since we had last played them and where to go from there when we would play properly (whenever that may be). my character, a ranger, settled down in another forest (Ygdraï Forest) with his followers, Andrew's character settled down in his temple (he is a Priest of Odar, the god of war), others went in their respective castles... And PJ, our Dungeon Master, threw the dice to see when in the game our character would see new developments and adventures coming. And it turned out to be the 25th of September. Today. Now that means when we play again, it will be the 25th of September for our characters. PJ observed that it was fitting that a new cycle would start in autumn, just like for our first adventure.

An autumnal garden party

As I am typing this, the neighbours (two down our house, not the next door ones which I dislike) are having a party in the garden, to celebrate something or other, maybe a birthday. There are party lights, some kind of banners and a fire. They started early in the evening. I have to say, although it is a fairly rare sight, I kind of like the idea. My grandfather on my mother's side was very fond of family gathering outside in the garden, even way after summer was over. I have only very vague memories of them, but I do remember the cold autumn air and the smell of fire (or I think I remember it) and would love to live such thing again. My father used to think it was pure madness and wondered what was the point of partying outside the comfort of home. He went along anyway, but to this day he keeps talking about how odd the idea was. I do have an hypothesis: my grandfather might have been as fond of autumn as I am. In any case, I will one day follow his example and re-start this tradition here.

Wolfgang for Wolfie

Everybody knows the lullaby Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star or Ah! Vous dirai-je Maman, as we know it in French. I cannot stand either of them, to be honest. I never could. Except the variations that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart made of it. As I have a newborn little Wolfie and I am eager to make him know and develop a taste for quality music from an early age, this is the version of the lullaby I make him listen to. Who knows, maybe he will benefit from the Mozart effect, if that really exists. In any case, there are worse things for Wolfie to listen to than the great Wolfgang.

The cry of an owl?

I took this picture in York, during a bird show. You will easily recognize the barn owl, one of the most common species of owls and at the basis of many stories of haunting and supernatural encounters in folklore. So I love them, like I love all owls. And recently, I heard in the night a cry that sounds a lot like the cry of an owl. I might be wrong, but it sounds like an owl. Maybe not the barn owl, but being such a common species, I would not be surprised that this is what we have as a neighbour, hiding somewhere in the woodlands nearby. Which would be extremely cool.

Brader Olivieri

September Equinox

Like last year, I am celebrating the arrival of the Autumnal Equinox with a meme from the characters of Charles M. Schulz. Of course, for me autumn starts with the first of September and I call it autumn, not Fall, which sounds like, well, a fall. But in any case, happy autumnal equinox and watch this space, as Vraie Fiction will take the colours and mood of autumn. More than it already is, I mean. After all, it is my favourite season.

Craving a ploughman's sandwich

There is one delicious thing I discovered in England which I think I have not blogged about yet: the ploughman's lunch, which I usually eat in sandwich form. I have been craving ploughman's sandwich recently. I had some today, but it was one of the cheap brands you find in convenient stores and petrol stations. I love a ploughman's sandwich with quality ingredients to maximize taste: an old cheddar, top quality chutney to go with it and of course good bread. Hand made ideally, or least industrialized as possible. I bought the one you see on this picture a few weeks ago during one of our visits to the hospital. There was beer in the chutney. It was the best ploughman's sandwich I had in ages. Sadly, I did not take note of the brand.

"Can't sleep, clown will eat me"

Fans of the classic seasons of The Simpsons will remember that this is what a young Bart was saying in Lisa's First Word when Homer had built him a clown-themed bed, as his old pram is going to be used by his yet to be born sister Lisa. The episode was hilarious and confirmed my belief that clowns are creepy and scary. The line is now part of pop culture, it is also the one I had in mind and kept repeating to myself when I was trying to sleep, in the little hours of the morning, while my wife was still in labour. So for no better reason, I thought to share it here tonight:

On the scary read program

Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, but it is now and has been since about mid-August or so my officious countdown to Halloween. Which means that I have started reading horror stories and as time goes by I will read more and more. As much as my status as a new daddy allows me, of course. This year, I have added to the reading program the stories of F. Marion Crawford. I recently bought this book with some (all?) of the supernatural stories he wrote. And no, I did not choose this book because of its cover (albeit what a great scary picture!). I discovered Crawford reading The Upper Berth in The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories, which was one of my favourite of the anthology. I then read in another anthology For the Blood is The Life, a vampire story which confirmed my interest in Crawford's work. In both stories, the horror is not merely psychological: it has plenty of borderline gory elements that convey not only unease, but good old horror, if not terror. The evils in his stories can be as physically violent as they are malevolent. So I will read eagerly.

"Popotame"

Woodland theme

I blogged about the subject before in French: in a moment of inspiration, my wife and I had the idea that our little Wolfie would have a woodland themed bedroom. And, in extension, a lot of the objects we purchased for him, from the car seat to the feeding cushion, also started to be woodland themed. The car seat you see here has for motives trees and foxes. The funny thing is, the bedroom has not been painted or truly prepared yet, as our little wolf is sleeping the first few months of his life in his parents' bedroom. But when it is, expect it to be in a forest fitting a little wolf cub.

I don't know if my parents-in-law have told friends and family of our decorating project, but we were surprised to find in the mail this present, which wrapping paper was also woodland themed. It had trees, mushrooms, bears, foxes (always foxes, with their lovely fiery colours), badgers and others. It is very autumnal, which is also fitting, as we have an autumn baby. Anyway, I found the wrapping so pretty that I took a picture of it and decided to share it here. I am a very enthusiastic new dad.

Question existentielle (291)

Dislike thy neighbour

There has recently been a rather unpleasant sight at the entrance of the back garden: a few cigarettes butts on the porch. The main suspects are our next door neighbours: late at night, I have seen a few young adults/old teenagers hanging around the garden, speaking and chatting. At least one of them was smoking. So now I have a legitimate grudge about some of the people living next door. I have been a bit busy recently so I have not confronted my neighbours about this, but I intend to do it, although I do not know the tone I should take. I tend to be rather aggressive with these matters and lack of sleep can make me nastier. My wife tells me to take a diplomatic approach. After all, these are most likely the kids of the house next door, not the adults. All the same, I now officially dislike and distrust my neighbours. Some of them anyway.

The new dad's look

You will obviously read more posts about my newborn baby and parenthood on this blog. I hope you don't mind. Anyway, I noticed today how much the arrival of Wolfie's had changed my look. I don't look tired, not as much as I thought anyway, but I have a certain softness that I don't think I ever truly had before. This is due to my beard, which I have left growing. Not because I want to grow a beard, but because with all the new things I need to do surrounding my child, most importantly bonding with him, shaving is one of the things that I had to let go with. As I summed up on Facebook: "I haven't shaved for about a week because I'm a new dad and can't be bothered." I think this deserves to be a new great unknown line.

Ready for Autumn

One of my friends published this meme on her Facebook wall. I absolutely loved it, as it sums up my state of mind regarding the season and make a nice list of what autumn is for me and I am certain for many people. After moaning last Tuesday about the lousy (hot) weather, it seems today that the temperature is a bit more fitting, a bit more autumnal. Well, compared to the higher 20s temperatures we had, it is radically different. So anyway, instead of sharing it on Facebook, I decided to share it on my blog. I invite you to do the same.

The hour of the (little) wolf

Quick announcement: as my francophone readers know my wife and I are now parents of a beautiful little boy, the one I refer to on this blog as Wolfie. With his hair and his pointy ears, he does have something of a little wolf cub. He is absolutely adorable and after an epic time to bring him to the world (which I might blog about in parts some day) he is finally here and now ready to go home. I will obviously blog more sporadically and most likely will write shorter posts but I will keep blogging. About him and also other subjects so as not to bore you in the role of the new daddy. So watch this space.

O Autumn, Where Art Thou?

I am asking the question as today was the hottest September day on record in the UK. And that is not fun for someone like me who longs for cooler days. I wonder where autumn is, but I can see it is here, even though it is too hot for the season. At least the leaves have started changing colours. And what goes around comes around, so it will eventually change. Still, it is too sticky too comfort right now.

This Friday's sandwich treat

I blogged about sandwiches recently, but it has been a while since I did not blog about my Friday sandwich treat. Remember them? You can read about this tradition on this post from November 2011. Anyway, instead of going for chicken mayo in a baguette, which I usually do, I decided to vary a bit and settled for smoked salmon with horseradish sauce. The rest was the same: lettuce, onions, tomatoes... and green olives. And as for every Friday I had a Coke to gulp it down. I threw the staff off guard with this change as I am a man of habits. But anyway, the mix of smoked salmon, horseradish sauce and green olives is I think even better than my usual choice. Friday being the day to eat fish, it might become my new Friday treat for a while.

Addicted to Amazon

Since we are waiting for little wolf to arrive (any day now), I have been preparing his coming by buying lots of things on Amazon. I usually prefer to do shopping in person, not because I am old fashioned (although I am), but because I find Amazon unethical in many ways, I don't like that they often hurt local businesses and I also suffered a while ago from poor customer service. So I kept my distance for a while. That said, when you want something quick, it can become a necessary, or at least useful, evil. So I bought things on Amazon: bed sheets, nappies bin, clothes, plush toys, etc. Oh and some books for myself, as a treat. And after orders came through, I had to admit to myself: I was behaving like an addict. Well, not quite as dramatic as that, I didn't empty my bank accounts or anything of the sort, but I spent far too much time on Amazon than I should have had. So when little wolf is here, I will put a stop to it. Except for the few odd things I will need quickly and at a cheap price. But otherwise, I will kick the habit. Promise.

Snapple trivia

Sometimes at lunch time, I buy myself a Snapple drink, usually a fruit punch. It's probably just as bad as a cola, but I feel less guilty drinking that than a cola. Apparently, it says on the label that it is born in New York, but available everywhere in the world, or something like that. But what I like about Snapple is not the juice, which is more like a sort of juicy drink that tastes of colours more than any fruits, but the "real facts", bunch of trivial information about various topics: you cannot tickle yourself, plants can have a fever just like humans when sick, fish can drown too, etc. When one has a few minutes to waste during lunchtime, this is always fun to read. Moral of the story: I am easily amused.

Autumn chronicles

I thought I would blog a bit about the progress of the season in the next coming weeks, from time to time. This painting is from artist Ray Styles. It is titled "Across the Common, Autumn". Well, autumn is not as colourful as it is on this painting, but it has timidly started to look like the season should. I mean that the trees have started changing colours and we even have dead leaves on the ground, albeit this might have been due to the dry weather. As for the temperature, it is not always autumnal, but we did have cooler days. It is not as ideal as the same time last year, when we had borderline a perfect early start of the season, nevertheless, I have seen far worse. Soon, I hope, I can show pictures of woodlands rather than paintings.

"Be Seeing You" (The Prisoner)

"I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own."

I learned on the news that today was the 50th annyversary of The Prisoner, the cult tv series and brainchild of actor Patrick McGoohan. When he died, back in 2009, I blogged about him and my love of the series, which is one of my favourite and which I discovered in reruns when I was a teenager. I guess it was to be expected, that I made this kind of discovery at this time of my life, alongside A Clockwork Orange and other tales about the struggle between freedom and aggressive conformity. Knowing it is fifty years old and still fresh after half a century, it makes me want to rediscover it. Until then, here is the opening sequence, which gives you everything you need to know about the setting, the tone and its relevance:

Sanwiches and Northern hospitality

Of all the pictures I took in York, this must be my least impressive. It is true that we had already eaten most of the cheese sandwiches they brought for us. The sandwiches and the crisps were a complimentary snack from the Shambles Tavern. When you are tired and hungry after a day walking in the city, this was most welcome. I shared the picture on Facebook last year, with this caption: "Gotta love Northern hospitality. In the South, they'd charge every single crisp." That is not quite true and I was gently reminded that we can find such friendly pubs in the South as well. All the same, I have never seen one that was generous like this everywhere but in York and it does show the best of Northern hospitality and I wanted to show my gratitude on this blog. And I think even though not 100% accurate, my caption deserves to be a new great unknown line.

Shaken Udder's Chocolush Milkshake

I have recently discover this chocolate milkshake, aptly named Chocolush! (with an exclamation mark to give it more impact), from a brand called Shaken Udder. I know they do other flavours, banana, strawberry, vanilla and so on, but the only one I found was Chocolush. " And?"you may ask... And it is both delicious and highly addictive. I mean really, really addictive. the milkshake version of crack cocaine and I know I say this of a lot of chocolate based stuff. But in this case, it is absolutely true. You don't expect it, you just drink this milkshake, minding your own business, and within three gulps it is empty and you are left thirsty for more. The bottles we bought are simply too small to calm the craving! I know they have bigger ones, but so far I could not find them. So I am not sure if this is a plug or a warning, but here it is: Shaken Udder's Chocolush milkshake is an addictive substance!

Oxfordshire Stories of the Supernatural

You might remember this post which I wrote last year, about a book I found in the independent bookshop of Wallingford, but that I didn't buy, since I thought I had it already, as the image on its cover was exactly the same as another book I had in the same collection. Well, during my last time in Wallingford, I finally purchased Oxfordshire Stories of the Supernatural. And I read it last month, as I have started my officious countdown to Halloween. I thought it would be a nice way to getting myself in the mood. It was a pleasant read, if a bit sensationalist, as I suspected. The author is way too eager to believe in every claim of supernatural phenomenon and there is hardly any ounce of skepticism in it. But it had a few eerie moments, which was what I was looking for. Although it was not as scary as I wished and although I knew a lot of the stories from a book I had read earlier (and which I also bought in the independent bookshop of Wallingford), it was still fun in a spooky way. As Halloween is getting closer and closer, I will read more scary stories and of course blog about them.

To mow the lawn

My parents-in-law are in town and have decided to spoil us, while waiting to spoil their coming grandchild. So I am now the happy new owner of a lawnmower. To mow the lawn. Which I am grateful if only for one thing, which I must confess here: I have never in my life mowed the lawn. Not once. Not as a teenager, not as an adult. Because I never owned a lawn to mow and because my parents never even imposed this chore on me, they hired gardeners for that, which did the job very well, far better than I could have had. Mowing the lawn, in my opinion, is best left for professionals. Now I have no excuse and will have to do it myself. Decades of carefully avoiding it and now I need to bite the bullet. At least it's not a big lawn.

A hunting magazine in an hospital?

I did not know anything about The Field, which is apparently and according to Wikipedia the world's oldest field sport magazine, when I saw one of its issue in the antenatal ward of the hospital where my wife and I went to for the first scan of our little Wolfie. What was strange was not that there was a hunting magazine among the reading available for the patients in the corridor where we were waiting for the scan, but that it was the only magazine available. And a few weeks later, there was the same magazine, with its cover ripped off. My wife, who is a vegetarian, found this barbaric and its presence kind of crass. Even I thought it was, well, odd.

September at last!

At last, September has arrived! For those who have not noticed it. I love September and consider its first day the true first day of autumn (that's right, not the equinox). As it is a tradition on this blog every September (although not always the first), I upload to celebrate the coming of autumn a picture of this basket my parents made, full of the products of harvest: crabapples, apples, apple and crabapple jellies, flowers. This is, a sort of horn of plenty. I always long for September, but this year it could not happen too quickly as we are expecting our first child this month. It is a very fitting time for him to come into this world, what with his father loving autumn so much.
