About gloomy Saturdays

It is a cool, even cold, grey, lousy Saturday. I used to feel all down about these kinds of Saturdays, all gloomy and miserable. Then I learned to appreciate them more: while going out is less interesting, I spend more time reading, watching movies and listening to music. Saturdays are often gloomy in the months from January until May, one has to be stoical about them. And not to sound masochistic, but I find gloomy days atmospheric.

Janvier assez

Eggs and chips for Friday

This is my new Friday night meal: eggs and chips. I discovered it recently. I used to have basically breakfast for supper for our Friday supper when I was younger, either that or some fast food stuff, but the last month I have been eating the eggs and chips meal. I don't know why exactly, it just happened, one Friday night I decided to finish the eggs we had and add some chips from M&S with it. My wife told me that her father used to have that as a child and well, I can understand why. It is dead easy to make, especially after a hard day, or a hard week of work, like the ones I usually have. There are fancier ways to celebrate the start of the weekend, but I love its simplicity.

The criminal mind in a nutshell

I am reading The Double by George Pelecanos at the moment. It is the second novel featuring as protagonist private eye Spero Lucas. I already praised the return of the private eye character his the first novel featuring Lucas, a true return to form and also to the relevance of the private eye in the contemporary world. But there is something else always praiseworthy in Pelecanos's novels: his villains. The criminals are also so darn authentic, so genuinely chilling, even more since even though they are completely villainous, they are also completely plausible. The Double has a nasty little trio of villains. I will not spoil it for those who have not read the book yet, but I thought I would give you here a description of their motivations that struck me and stayed on my mind:

"They were thrill seekers. Serge knew no other way of life. Louis used the job to fight off his demons. Billy King had come to the D.C. area to have fun, steal what he could, and fuck and use as many women as he could. No bosses, no rush hour, no line at Starbucks in the morning, no crowded Metro cars. No responsibility.

It wasn't about the money. It was about having enough to stay in the game."

Is it only me, or isn't it the criminal mind in a nutshell? Written like each sentence is a powerful punch, or a precise stab, with efficiency, yet there is a kind of poetic evocation in this quote. It is just perfect.

Free David's Tea Day in a week

My brother PJ discovered this piece of news from MTL Blog and taunted me with this tonight on Facebok: next week, there will be a Free David's Tea Day. I love tea, I love David's Tea as a company and a tea producer and free tea is exactly in my price range. Unfortunately, I will not be in Montreal next week. A darn shame. That would make me start February on a good foot. I stole shamelessly the picture on the left from MTL Blog. "Thé mon amour", which you can see labeled on this mug, is a word play, meaning "You're my love" as it is pronounced or "Tea my love" as it is written. Kinda cute. Anyway, to get your free tea, pop up in one of the shops and download the Etsy app on your phone. And enjoy. Lucky you.

The world's greatest mac and cheese

Well, this is now official, the macaroni and cheese my wife found out in a Rose Elliot book is really the greatest macaroni and cheese in the whole world. Well, I am exaggerating, what I mean is that we made it during the Christmas holidays to my family and they loved it. It was strange, because we didn't do it so well on that occasion. But it impressed my parents enough to try it for themselves. We had given them the recipe, which you can find on this post. My mum used Cracker Barrel cheese on top. Anyway, for no better reason that it now crossed the Atlantic and it was a roaring success in the family, I am plugging it again, with a picture my father took of their version. This is, in my opinion, the world's greatest mac and cheese.

Longing for long train journeys

This picture was taken on the steamed train line between Dartmouth and Paignton. It was not nearly as nice as the other steamed train line we traveled on, because we went through it we barely saw Dartmouth which seemed lovely and Paignton is one of the tackiest, tasteless towns I ever saw in my life, but anyway, it illustrates this post's topic. And it allows me to publish another photo of my holidays.

So yes, as it happens sometimes, I am longing for long train journeys. I commute daily in trains, but a twenty minutes commute to go to work, while pleasant enough as it is quick, is hardly a way to truly appreciate the train as a mean of transport. I want to travel by train and to travel for leisure. I have some holidays coming in the next few months, so I might get my wish. We'll see. What I love with train travels, when they are comfortable, is that the journey in itself is an experience. I don't think any other mean of transport, except maybe the boat, can provide such feeling.

Mysterious basements

Fellow blogger Jaz from October Farm has recently blogged a series of posts about her "ugly" basement and all the stuff that is in it. This made me think of the basements I experienced in my life: mainly the one of my grandmother's house, which I blogged about extensively here and the one of my parents' house, where was/is my bedroom.  The basement in many houses is basically a clutter room, but at home it was and is big enough to be a floor of its own (and i know in architecture technically the basement is not a "floor" but there you go). We had many rooms in it, including the living room where the TV was, the table where we played D&Dr, by a fairly large library, a computer room, a tool room, my own bedroom and at least two storage rooms: one with a freezer and a wine cellar, another one, the "cold room", divided into two sub-rooms, one for other food (during Christmastime especially) and drinks and one mainly for logs for the fireplaces.

The basement in my parents' place is much bigger than the basement in my grandmother's house was, but it was not as mysterious: there was no "secret passage" in it. Nevertheless, it had/has its fair share of mystery: the cold room which we did not have the right to spend time in as children because it had to stay cold all year long and we could not keep the door open had all the mystery of forbidden places, the fireplace was made of rough stones and looked primitive, as if it belonged to another age (in our make belief games it was often the entry of a dragon's cave, or a castle) and well, there were plenty of old stuff, old books and memorabilia to feed our imagination We spent many rainy days, cold days, heatwave days in the basement without being bored. So I have a fondness for basements and what we can discover in them.

Piano Man

It is Saturday night and I thought about uploading a song. This one came to my mind easily: it was about Saturday nights, drinking and it has a lovely melancholic feel. I am talking of course about Piano Man by Billy Joel. It may be the only song by Billy Joel I genuinely love. I first listened to it sung by a rep in a musical summer camp when I was a child. Loved it then, love it now. I am actually surprised it took me that long to have it here on this blog.

Question existentielle (252)

Crowthorne (!)

Crowthorne is the name of a village and civil parish in Berkshire. I have never been there, however my wife and I drove through it a couple of times. The name struck me and I have developed a sort of obsession about the village. I never stopped in Crowthorne, but I want to go there one day, if only for one afternoon. The name mixes two things with sinister overtone: a crow and a thorn. It is the name of a place that belongs to a horror story, or a village in a Dungeons & Dragons setting. reading through its Wikipedia entry, the village seems to have little history. All the same, it deserves one, if imaginary. So I am very tempted to stop in Crowthorne to have a proper feel of the place and its atmosphere.

Relire L'ostie d'chat

Bagels: the pride of Montreal

I know I blogged about bagels very recently, but I had to do it again, as Montreal received recently an homage from comic book artist Stephan Pastis in his Pearls Before Swine comic strip: we make the best bagels in the world. Well, I knew that already. Better than New York even? Well, of course. Hands down. Eat your heart out, Big Apple. Apparently, Pastis went to St-Viateur Bagel. This is where I first discovered bagels. I mean I had some before, but this was a revelation to me.I could not believe eating something this simple yet this good. I said it very often on this blog: the bagels saved me from starvation back in the days when I was studying there, and then in the years I spent working and living in what remains my favourite city. Bagels are the best Montreal offered to the gastronomical world. Not because it is originally from Montreal, I read Pearls Before Swine sometimes in the train going to work, because Metro publishes it. I always thought he was funny, but it was just something I read for a quick laugh. I will now read it far more eagerly. Obviously, Pastis is a man of taste. And to finish this post, I invite you to watch this video, about the homage the owners of St-Viateur did to the homage they received.

Don't go to Madagascar

The things we learn during conversation at work sometimes... Yesterday, we were talking about exotic places to visit on holiday and for some reason one of my colleagues mentioned that Madagascar was now considered such a dangerous place that it was strongly advised not to travel there. I checked on the Foreign Office website and it is indeed terrifying: political instability still rampant after a coup d'état in 2009, widespread crime, explosions due to civil unrest, even some foreigners set on fire. I used to think it was a quiet little tropical paradise, I even remember meeting people from there in my first year studying in England. Nice, pleasant people. But no, it looks like heaven, but it is pretty much hell. So here it is, don't go to Madagascar.

Je me trompe?

Tesco calls them bagels...

This weekend, my wife and I went to shop in Tesco. In the bakery section, there were these so-called bagels. I could not believe it. They looked so surreal, I had to take a picture. My wife said I was embarrassing. I replied: "They are embarrassing to sell them." This is, I think, a great unknown line. Then, I published the picture on Facebook, because such travesty has to be named and shamed. I wrote: "Tesco calls them bagels. I call them cardboard doughnuts." This deserves to be another great unknown line. Anyway, as a guy from Montreal, who survived starvation thanks to quality bagels, these are a crime against gastronomy.

Cat's warmth

You want to know about a sweet bit of news that will make you go: "aaawww"? It did make me feel all fuzzy inside and gave me back some faith in... well, not in mankind, but in the world as a whole. It is of course about my favorite species of the animal kingdom: the cat. Not these two. The two on the picture are Fiyero and Bustopher, they are the cats of the friends of my wife, who live in Derbyshire. But they make for a great visual companion for this post. And it is also an excuse to upload another picture of cats.

So what is that bit of news? You may have read/heard of it already, but here it is: a stray cat has saved an abandoned baby from freezing in Russia. In Russia. Which means, during Russian winter. Not as nasty of where I come from, Russian winters, but they don't have the same heating system in Russia. It is a rough place. A cruel place too. And a cat saved a baby from freezing to death. This bit of news remind me why I never think of cats as cold and distant creatures: they are caring, sometimes far more than our fellow primates. This one could certainly gives lessons of empathy. Cats are superior creatures, intellectually and now I am tempted to think morally as well. Anyway, it is a sweet bit of news.

Tragedy at work

Well, I am exaggerating of course. I hope nobody worried reading this title. It was not exactly a tragedy, but it certainly makes a day more difficult, more painful as well, as I need my cuppa tea and I need it quickly. Tea is an essential part of my mornings at work, it is the fuel my body works on, it is essential to my survival and well being. I have Earl Grey because it is supposed to give energy. Hence, I need boiling water ready to pour. But that day, the boiler was out of order. So I had to do it the slow way, using the kettle that you do not see on the picture. It is slow, boiling water with a kettle. It is certainly not ideal when you are about to have your quick tea fix.

Je me trompe?

Swans

I took this picture at the Natural History Museum. There are plenty of swans around here, in every pond or river you can see them. I usually don't notice them, but these ones, which have been stuffed by a taxidermist a long time ago, I found them fascinating, as I often do with stuffed animals on display in museums. Maybe because this made up scene of a swan family by a swamp or a lake, with the plants and the cygnets has a certain atmosphere. In a way, it feels more real than the reality of the swans that I can see nearby. Whatever the reason, I love this display.

Local beauties

There is one thing I love about local pubs, is that we can have a taste of the local beauties. I am talking about the beers of course. I took these three halves in the local pub of a village in Derbyshire that had an impressive variety of real ales. We were there on the suggestion of the friends of my wife, who lived near, and knew of my love of proper English beers. During a cold autumn night, after a walk through the woods to get there, before a late dinner, these three were heart warming. Shame on me, I do not remember which pub, but I will try to find it again and may give it a bit of publicity here on Vraie Fiction. Anyway, you can't have a much better evening than in such company, with a dark blonde, a dark blonde and a brunette at your table.

Devon cream tea at Fat Lemons

It is Saturday and as a tradition I am going to plug some food from a restaurant, a café or a pub. This is the third time, no less, that I plug something from Fat Lemons in Totnes. But they do make delicious food. And among the many items on their menu, a Devon cream tea, which can be eaten as breakfast or dessert. You can see it on the picture: lemon zested scones (heart shaped) with clotted cream and jam, accompanied with breakfast tea. I had the tea, my wife had the scones as a late breakfast. Then I ordered some more scones for myself, to go with the tea and a sort of dessert. I would have loved to have this today.

Smart Friday

Today at work, some professional photographers and filmmakers came to my work place to take a few pictures of us and film us for some PR/exposure purpose. Which means that we were asked to look our best: no five o'clock shadows, no jeans, no casual clothes. Which is borderline tragic for me: I prefer to wear casual clothes, especially on Friday. It is one aspect of my working place I love: even though it is a very serious corporate environment, the dress code is minimal. But not today. So I had to wear my one pair of trousers meant for meeting clients at conferences and my grey shirt that goes with my grey temples. And I had to shave. I hate to shave for Friday, I prefer having a bit of a stubble.

For the beard, it was of little use: mine grows like weed, so I had a five o'clock shadow when they started shooting anyway. All the same, I had nice trousers instead of jeans and an elegant shirt that made me look smart if not a bit old. And everything was properly ironed too. But it still felt like torture. Smart Fridays are not for me. Bring on the casual ones.

I saw snowflakes this evening

Well, as the title says, I saw some snow this evening, coming back from work. When I left work to be precise: there was a drizzling rain, then a few flakes fell down. It was most definitely snowflakes. And the air smelled of snow too. Winter in England is rarely snowy, even for a few days and this year and last have been tragically mild. I miss snow sorely. While there was hardly any serious drops, not enough to cover the ground, let alone to make me miss work tomorrow, it felt good to see it, and smell it in the air. It may be coming late in winter, but it already made this January evening more enjoyable than usual your average English January.

To warm my bones beside the fire...

Picture taken at my wife's friends' place in Derbyshire. It illustrates my state of mind and what I long for: a warm fire. It happens to me sometimes. Because, while winter is not often cold in this country, it is often cool and wet and rather unpleasant and, while you would still rather stay home, you are forced for whatever reason to go out. When I am home, I wish I could just lit a fire and just sit down and keep myself warm, wrapped up in a blanket. But there is no fireplace here. So I have to use hot (very hot) showers instead and well, a blanket. Also we don't have the Peak District surrounding us, so a fire would be slightly less romantic. All the same, I wish I had a fireplace now. And so accompany this post, I have decided to add a bit of Pink Floyd music, the last segment of Time. Because it is magnificent. And because it is my state of mind.

Question existentielle (251)

Heavy Monday and Italian wisdom

I had an exhausting day today, a Monday like they are too often. And it was so grey and dark and gloomy outside too! A few minutes ag0, I posted on my Facebook wall that Mondays should be abolished. My Italian friend (the one who lives in Italy, not the one here) commented: "Come sono pesanti i lunedi". Translated pretty accurately (I think) by myself: "How heavy I feel on Monday." Then she wrote something that was really enough to make you feel down, but was again spot on: "Two Mondays of the year gone, fifty more to endure." I cannot praise enough Italian wisdom: she just gave me two great unknown lines. Anyway, here's to one heavy Monday gone.

The homity pie from Cranks

To celebrate the weekend that is about to end, I am plugging a British classic dish, the homity pie. I had this one in the Cranks restaurant in Dartington. You see more the salad accompanying it than the pie itself, but there you go. I say I had this one, but I think it is the only homity pie I ever had. It is also a vegetarian dish, the kind of vegetarian dish that does not make you miss meat one moment. It is perfect comfort food on a gloomy day like this one.

The Farrelly Brothers and Pelecanos

I was watching Shallow Hal a few weeks ago, because I was tired and I had no idea what else to watch. I have never been much into the Farrelly brothers, but I thought there are worse ways to spend a Saturday night when you are tired than watch a comedy. Then something struck me, that made me enjoy the movie a thousand times more: Hal in one scene was reading Down By the River Where the Dead Men Go by George Pelecanos. I understand they are admirers of his work. Good to know: I am too, and it makes me appreciate them more, not as movie makers, but as men of taste. I don't think there is a deeper meaning to the presence of the novel in the comedy than their admiration for Pelecanos. That said, the novel deals partially with Nick Stefanos, the main character, discovering something about his girlfriend he would rather not see, her alcoholism, which ties it nicely to the plot of Shallow Hal. I have no idea if the Farrelly brothers thought about it. But you never know: they are obviously men of literary taste.

RIP Francesco Rosi

A black cat in Brittany

I was looking again at the picture of our first time in Brittany (as you know, I have recently renewed with an old obsession about the place) and I found this picture I took of a black cat. I am not sure if I took it near Brocéliande, but the whole Brittany is a mythical place. This picture dates back from 2008. It fascinates me, first because it shows that my love for cats in general and black cats in particular is a fairly old thing. The cat my housemate had in Liverpool was black too. But I am fascinated by the picture because it is a black cat in the country of myths and legends, black cats being of course associated with the supernatural, often in a negative way, but sometimes a positive one too. When I adopt a cat again, there is a good chance he will be black. And I might give him a Celtic name and/or a name from the Arthurian legend.

La microbrasserie Archibald

Petite nouvelle brassicole personnelle.

A time for otters

Today, when I went to work, it was pouring rain. And it rained all day, on and off. I was soaking wet when I arrived at work, I was still wet when I got home. I felt like an otter, like I always do when I wear my dark coat on a cool day. I made the analogy before, I thought I would make it again tonight, as it was on my mind all day: gosh it rains, but thankfully I have warm and waterproof coat. I took this picture in Derbyshire, in an otter and other animals sanctuary. I kind of like these little fellas.

A thought about Ottawa

I know we are living in a difficult and troubled time and something horrible happened today, nevertheless I thought I would share a thought about Ottawa, a city I don't like much. My brother PJ, who works there, mentioned yesterday on Facebook that the Rideau Canal is not opened yet. I wrote: "Ottawa without the Rideau Canal is an almost useless city." I said alomost, as there are still other things I loved about it. And no, I don't mean the federal Parliament. But in winter, when there is actually ice, this is what the city is, or should be all about. Or mostly about. Without the Rideau Canal running, or without people ice skating on it, it remains mainly a capital city, a boring place full of civil servants and anonymous governmental buildings. So yes, there is a bit of truth in what I wrote on my brother's wall and it deserves to be a great unknown line. The third one (see here and here) I put on this blog about the city. All of them had a hint of cruelty. I love poking fun at Ottawa.

The Land of Merlin

I took this picture back in 2008, during our very first trip to Brittany, where my parents-in-law live. It was the ensign of a tourist shop at the edge of Brocéliande, the legendary forest associated with the Arthurian legend. Translated, it is called "In the Land of Merlin", hence my title. My early readers might remember that I obsessed about my time there (before, during and after) and that I blogged a lot about it.

So I was rediscovering these pictures dating back from 2008 and I thought that I had not visited Brocéliande since that time and that my last trip to Brittany dates back from a few years already. This has been long overdue, especially since I have only seen a fraction of the eerie forest. I have some holidays coming up and my wife and I could take them there, but we might need to spend it in something more productive than... well, enjoying a proper holiday. All the same, it is now a project to revisit the Land of Merlin.

Books VS ebooks

I received as a gift from my parents in law a Kindle. That was... a year ago. I have not used it yet, to my great shame. I am old fashioned in some ways, in reading it is one of them. I love books as objects and while I do not judge a book by its cover, I find it nice to buy books with appealing covers. And you don't really have this in e-form. This physicality. But I will not be close minded and it is a very generous gift, so I will use it. And my bookshelves are crammed enough as it is anyway.

That said, I saw this meme on Facebook and I thought it was hilarious. But not only was it funny, it was also revealing: books as a form, with all their paper and clunky format, remain relevant today, if only because they are simpler to use. And they have a charm ebooks do not have. Not yet anyway.

Double blues

It is Sunday evening, so I have the Sunday blues. And I barely saw the weekend, because of the jetlag and the travel back from the Christmas holidays. Because Christmastime is also now over, I also have the post-Christmas blues creeping in. Sure, the Christmas season only ends officially in two days, but by any practical means it is done and dusted. I feel melancholic and wonder what to do in the upcoming weeks to raise morale. I will need to find something to look forward to. The week ahead always seems monotonous, the weeks after Christmas are always more so. I will need to find movies to watch, books to read (thankfully I have plenty of that), places to go to and overall ways to increase my level of endorphin. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to tell me.

The Willow in Totnes

This is a quick post to chase off the post Christmas and the Sunday blues. We all need happy thoughts. I do need them anyway. If you ever visit Totnes in Devon, it is one of the restaurants I would recommend, among the many ones my wife and I found in the town. We went there twice. It is a vegetarian restaurant and it has one of the largest meals I ever ate in such places. I could not find the website, it seems that it disappeared, but you can find more about it on TripAdvisor. The first time I went there, I had some kind of aubergine filled with almonds and feta cheese. Delicious. And it is a lovely atmospheric setting.

Blueberry Rooibos from Whittard

This is a quick plug for amateur of hot beverages, i.e. teas and its variants/cousins. My wife bought me, among various Christmas presents, a few teas from Whittard. I like Whittard, but did not have the occasion yet to truly discover their products. There was a Whittard shop in this town years ago, but it closed down back in early 2008, before I truly develop my interest for teas. Anyway, about the products she bought was the Blueberry Rooibos, a whole pack of it. I tried it before the holidays and decided to have some now. Delicious. The softness of the blueberry is a perfect marriage with the rooibos and makes for a relaxing evening drink. As my readers may know, I have a particular fondness for blueberries as it is the emblematic berry of the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region where I come from. So it is a fitting rooibos blend for me. But in any case, it must be full of antioxidant so you can't go wrong with it. And it is very easy to drink.

The miseries of plane travelling

I am back in the UK after my Christmas holidays. The post-Christmas, post holidays blues are already settling in, but I wish to blog about something else. I just rediscovered last night how dreadful traveling may be sometimes. Not all the flight was bad, but I lost the sound of my In Flight Entertainment system after two hours of use, so I had to rely on something else to get through the trip without getting bored: sleep, or attempt to. I was too tired to read. I did manage to sleep, surprisingly enough, but in a crammed space and on a sitting position, it was very uncomfortable and not exactly restorative. Especially since there was a good deal of turbulence. I had better flights. Yet, I did manage to sleep, so I guess I should not complain.

Question existentielle (250)

A walk in a quiet city

Happy New Year 2015 everyone! I hope you are enjoying its first day. Today, my wife and I took a walk on the Plateau Mont-Royal in the early afternoon. There was a bit of snow falling, almost every shop was closed, save for the odd café and dépanneur. It was surreal to see how quiet Mont-Royal Avenue was. Only a few walkers, even less cars. It was lovely. I enjoy Montréal when it is buzzing, but it is a nice bit of variety to experience it like this, a quiet city on a quiet winter day.
