Being dragged to a musical

In less than an hour, my wife and I are supposed to see a musical, done by a local amateur dramatic/operatic society. We are going because a friend of ours is part of the cast. But we only go out of friendship (and because it is literally next door). Because we are fairly sure it will be bad. Actually, our friend herself said it is not a good show (rubbish material, conflicting egos, etc). I have nothing against amateur dramatic societies, or amateur operatic societies, as this one is supposed to be. But it is not an operatic society. They used to produce comic operas and good quality musicals a few decades ago, but for the last few years or so have fallen back to poor productions based on 80s popular tunes turned into musicals, or modern soaps turned into musicals, etc. I like to see amateur productions when they actually take good care of what they do and are eager to take on challenging material. Because quality material makes people better. And this one, well, isn't. So in sum, I am really dreading it.

Slap a smile on your face and compliment your friend's performance. That's what friends are for.
