Flight from the dark

Here is another nostalgic post about a gamebook from my childhood. You see on the left the French cover of Flight from the Dark of the Lone Wolf saga, written by Joe Dever. I first played/read The Chasm of Doom, but it is Flight from the Dark that caught my attention. A friend of mine had it and I saw it on the table of his living room before going to school. In French the title was Les Maîtres des Ténèbres, translated The Lords of Darkness, a free translations of the Darklords of the series, who are the nemesis and the ancient evil the hero (played by the reader) fights. Both the title and the image on the cover struck me then. A fat demonic  creature plunging a dagger into the eye socket of a skull, a stream of blood running from it. Pretty dark for a children book. Very dark in fact.

Anyway, so I was fascinated by the title and the cover, enough so before I ended up reading/playing the book a few years later, its plot became the starting point of many make belief games my brothers, my friends and I were playing. It is a simple one: after the destruction of the monastery where he was studying to become a Kai master (some kind of priest/ninja/Jedi Knight) by the Darklords, destruction of which he is the sole survivor, Lone Wolf (the hero) takes the road to the capital city, to warn the king of the upcoming invasion. This is of course heavily inspired by Lord of the Rings and Star Wars and I guess that's what attracted many young boys my age to the book series. The story is linear enough so it is easy to follow and not very difficult. Unlike many gamebooks set in a medieval fantasy world, most of the action happened outside, in forests and on the road, instead of an enclosed space like a dungeon. And Dever's prose may not be the most sophisticated, but for a young reader the story and the environment were very atmospheric. It is one of the many gamebooks that later influenced our Dungeons & Dragons games. I think it certainly played a part in me choosing to play a ranger. Years later, I found it again in France, so I bought it, out of nostalgic feeling. When I get a D&Dr craving which I cannot satisfy, I still use this book as a fix.

Baby Owl

This is the pottery of a... baby owl, obviously, which I found in a local exhibition of local artists. Well, I don't know how local is Brenda Piper, but among birds of prey and nocturnal creatures I particularly love owls, as you know. I found this baby owl very cute and it was quite cheap so I bought it in a whim. The flat may be a bit too cluttered with ornaments already, but I thought this one would not take much room anyway. I usually have feline-related decorations (Ruby for instance), but this will bring a bit of diversity.

Odin on my mind

I probably sound like a broken record, but there you go. Maybe it is because this month was our meeting anniversary, maybe because I see cats very often these days, but I am thinking a lot about Odin these days. I miss him a lot. I even started craving fish and chips, maybe because this is what I was carrying back when I met him. It struck me that he did not have yet his Viking's funeral. The ashes of my black cat with one eye are still on the bookshelf. I should really do it, make a nice ceremony and all, but I cannot bring myself to do it. Maybe only when I will leave this place. I have decided that when this happens, when I do leave the flat, I will then adopt another cat, preferably a black cat. For the reasons listed on this post. In the right time and the right place. Until then, and until I blog about him again, here is a still (I think) unpublished picture of Odin, when I gave him tuna for the first time.

A fox on the railway

I blogged before about the menagerie on the railway I travel every day to go to and back from work. The cats at the station where I wait for my train home especially, but also the pheasant. And there are rabbits, deers, other things too I haven't blogged about yet. Yesterday evening, a new fellow showed up: a red fox. They are very common here in the UK, I remember seeing them very often around the university residences where I lived. I loved seeing them, foxes being among my favorite animals. I cannot remember the last time I had seen one live. When I heard him ruffling in the shrubbery, I thought at first it was one of the cats, then he came out of the open. I could see him very well for a few moments, he was very close. But only for a few moments. He looked at me, I looked at him. I had this brownish orange-red colour (red foxes are never red, they are more orange foxes really) and I think he had something in his mouth, maybe a black bird, maybe some rodent. Or maybe he had nothing. When I tried to take a picture he moved away, then he started walking on the tracks, so all I could get of him was this shot. He is the brown blur on the right rail. The fox carried on walking away from the station, while the train was coming, just as oblivious as the cats seem to be in the same situation. But it made my day.

This of course reminded me a lot of Springwatch, where foxes are often featured. This year, they are quite a lot anyway. In the moment I saw the fox, the thought crossed my mind that, if I could take a good photo, I could send it to the program. A lot of viewers do it. But this one will certainly not make the cut. Nobody would believe this blur is a fox. A shame, really. But I was always a lousy photographer. This fox will still be around I hope for Autumnwatch. I might get lucky (okay, very lucky) then. I associate foxes far more with Autumnwatch and of course autumn. The fiery fur of the fox fits the autumnal surrounding perfectly. Nevertheless, it was nice to see one yesterday. I love to see them in any season.

I discovered Vanuatu

Well, not really, I mean it existed way before me and I did not physically discover it... But I first learned about it today, this very morning, out of total random. Never mind the details, it would be a bit long and boring to explain, but it was at work. So I discovered about Vanuatu, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, southern of the hemisphere, relatively near Australia, if it has to be near anywhere. In fact, it is far from everywhere. Which gives it, in my eyes at least, a certain aura of mystery. There are plenty of fascinating tidbits to learn about Vanuatu, my favorite one is that it is a volcanic island. Now that makes it even more exotic and mysterious. Like the setting of some cheesy adventure movie. Being originally from the middle of nowhere myself, I feel a sort of kinship from remote places and this one fits the bill. And it is a volcanic island. A volcanic island. So now I know about Vanuatu. And even the name is cool.

Longing for a fireplace

Today is cold and wet. Yesterday was cold and wet. Wet like an English day, cold like May should never be. I already blogged about the weather this evening. I blogged about it yesterday. I promise tomorrow, I will find another topic. But it does not feel or look like May, anyway. I should be in short sleeves, I wear long sleeves and I miss sorely my old green jumper. And more than my green jumper, I miss a fireplace, any fireplace. We have two in parents' home, I wish I could be there right now, lit a fire and warm my bones by the fire. I took this picture in The Three Tuns in Henley, I thought it was worth the fanciest ornaments one could ever have. A bunch of logs, simply. I love the pub for many reasons, this is one of them. My dad had a whole bunch of  logs like these ones, enough to warm up en enlighten many cold nights. Or days. I love the warmth, but also the colours of the fire and the smell of smoke. I find fireplaces soothing and comforting.

A line about rainy days

It was a rainy day today, surprise surprise, it was also a bank holiday. It was often pouring in fact. My wife came with this reflection about rainy days: "I love rainy days because you can stay in without feeling guilty." This deserves to be a great unknown line. It is also often my feeling about them and I suspect shared secretly by many.

Springwatch is on tonight

A quick post to remind every people living in the UK that the new season of Springwatch is on tonight on BBC2, at eight o'clock. As May is about to end, I find it late in spring to have a show featuring seasonal changes to British wildlife, but at least it is still on and I intend to watch it eagerly. I have uploaded here a picture I took at the Natural History Museum. It is of a stuffed barn owl, one of the many stars of the show. I love owls, as my long-time readers know, so it is one of my favourite of the stars of Springwatch and I hope we see plenty of them this season.

Don't Ever Love Me (Harry Belafonte)

I did not upload Harry Belafonte in a long while, not since almost a year in fact, and I am feeling like listening to him, so here is one. It is based on an Haïtian folk song, Choucoune, but Belafonte made his own version, maybe the most famous, known as Don't Ever Love Me. I love listening to Belafonte on warm summer evenings and while it is not like this just yet, I am certainly in the mood.

Cream Tea

I had this yesterday, in a local café. Cream tea an English tradition that is lovely in itself (a specialty from Devon and Cornwall, according to Wikipedia), but also made me survived starvation quite a few times, when I had a very late breakfast (say around lunchtime) and did not bother eating anything before going out. So I ended up having something sweet in the middle or late afternoon. But tea has energizing virtues, so it is fine.

So in the café, they were offering Yorkshire tea with a home-made scone, with some jam (strawberry jam) and clotted cream. It fills you enough for a few hours and it is delicious. That said maybe one scone was not enough as I was still hungry after it. I think I would have had two. There were other offers, with much larger plates with either sandwiches or an array of cakes, but I did not want to fill myself until bedtime. I know it is an afternoon snack, but cream tea makes for a perfect breakfast. Anyway, this was my little venture in an old English tradition. I should do it more often.

The Stag as a pub's name

If you travel in England, you probably noticed that many pubs share the same name: the King's Head, the Queen's Head, the Red Lion, the Duke of Something or Other, George & Dragon, etc. Even when they are not part of a chain (Wetherspoon, Harvester), they have these very banal, generic names. Or even when they do belong to a chain, they have every single pub take one of these names to make themselves seem more local. Even though there is a pub with the same name almost everywhere. Some of these common name I don't like, some I find full of charm. The Stag is one of the latter. It is short, simple, it has a nice rustic ring to it and it is associated with wildlife and an animal I love (and not only on a plate). And a pub named The Stag often has a nice ensign of a... stag, which is worth the look. In this particular one, I was not really impressed with the food, it was nice enough but nothing outstanding (maybe next time I should check if they have venison), but what an ensign. I guess it is like judging a book by its cover, but the appearance of the pub, its architecture and ensign, in sum its overall aesthetic, is an important part of the experience.

Prairial

Three days

We are Friday, the weekend has started and this Monday will be a bank holiday. So it is a three days weekend. May in the UK has two bank holiday weekends, one at the beginning, one at the end. I enjoy them enough, but I think it is a bit much in this month. I would rather have one in say September or October. That said, as I have been very busy this month and after my marathon trip to Paris, I am welcoming these three days. I intend to do very little.

First summer storm?

It happened this afternoon: a huge, powerful, violent storm, with hail and thunder. The sky was dark, so much that it look like night was about to fall. We had storms earlier this year, in fact very early in the year, but this is the first one that looks and feels like a summer storm. We are at the end of May, it is still springtime, but it feels already, at last I should say, that summertime is coming. I often think that summer is baptized by a thunder storm. I wonder if that was it today.

Question existentielle (228)

When the journey is worth the trip

I am back from Paris since yesterday night. I went there for business. I already blogged about it a few minutes ago. I took the Eurostar. A detail you might know about me: I like neither London nor Paris. Some places in these cities I love, but they are not my village. But as you might also know about me, I love train travels and never get tired of them. And, while I sometimes dreaded my short stay in Paris, I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the train on my way to London and then on the Eurostar. Even on the way back when it was getting late and I was tired. I managed to read a lot more than I do during a normal day and the journey was comfortable, far more comfortable than with most other means of transportation anyway (maybe not the boat, but I did not use the boat enough to give a good comparison). And the distance is relatively short between London and Paris. It gives you enough time to read plenty, but not too long as to get bored. I guess what matters really is to have a good book or two. On the way back, I stopped in the canteen wagon for a few minutes and looked at the window. Not the most beautiful scenery, but through from a train in motion going at high speed it has a certain charm. I thought that this was, this is, the way to travel.

The cat in the pub

Yesterday we went for a few drinks with a friend at the local pub near the train station, the first pub I went to when I came to this town. More about it here and here, if you are curious. You can pictures of it scattered around my blog. I got kind of bored of it, it is a nice looking pub but the choice of beers and guest ales is not great except during the odd beer festival, so I don't go there as often, except in autumn when the pub and surroundings is absolutely beautiful, or when there is a real ales festival. But yesterday afternoon/evening, I discovered another regular which will make me want to come more often. I am of course referring to this cat, with the lovely golden brown fur. He came on the deck above the garden and even entered the pub. He was not always eager to receive cuddles from me, but he did enjoy at least some of them and spent a good bit of time rubbing against me. I think he was still shy. Moments like this remind me of Odin, who I miss sorely. But it is nice to bond, even so slightly, with a local cat. A cat in a pub gives it more character.

Simon Russell Beale as King Lear

I did not blog about it since I saw it, but I thought I would write now about the production of King Lear by Sam Mendes for the National Theatre, especially about Simon Russell Beale in the title role. Long story short: seen it, loved it. I did not appreciate it as much as I could as I watched in an evening of the week and I was tired, so I am considering seeing it again. There are still tickets available and performances will end in early July, by the way. So you can see for yourself.

What sold me this production and made me rediscover the play is the performance of Beale. He plays Lear first as an aging dictator eager to enjoy his retirement, but nevertheless prone to fits of anger, this destructive wrath old age and power could bring to such a man. In the other production I saw, years ago, Lear was depicted as an elderly king, whose old age made him capricious. I think this is how he is often perceived in productions, I may be wrong. In this one, he is a hard, feared military leader, stripped slowly from his power, social stature and wealth by his daughters, who do have motivations to get back at him, to finally become a bitter old man and finally a madman. Beale then plays him as suffering from senile dementia, losing his inhibitions, trembling, becoming confused and restless. This is a stroke of genius. Lear's descent into madness is both unsettling and fascinating. His vulnerability forces us to sympathizes with the former tyrant and to face an illness that might be our own one day.

Tea from Wallingford

I came to this realization recently: I think Wallingford might be the quintessential English town and the last one of its kind. Case in point: they have their own tea shop. Okay, so it is called The Wallingford Tea & Coffee Co, but it really is a tea shop. That rare thing usually owned by Chinese in London. Well, this is an English one. As much as tea can be English. And it is not really, as you can see from the picture accompanying this post: their English Breakfast blend is made from teas from Assam and Ceylon. Nevertheless, I love the shop. It is simple, sober, there are nothing fancy looking, merely lots and lots of different teas. It is all about the product. Even though I read that they rebranded it, I did not see any evidence of it in the shop. The boxes had that yellow colour and I did not mind the old fashioned look.

I bought some blends, among them this one, which is now my breakfast tea. It is very black, very strong and perfect in the morning to wake up. It apparently has other virtues, according to the writing on the side of the box: "Research has shown that a diet rich in antioxidants from sources such as fruits, vegetables and tea, can reduce the degenerative effects of lifestyle diseases". The degenerative effects of lifestyle diseases, that sounds like it applies to me. So I better drink plenty of tea.

The Detective Tales cover for May

This is time again in the month when I upload and comment a cover from Detective Tales. I might try to find other pulp magazines to do the same thing at some point, because the choice from some months is starting to run thin. I hesitated to upload this one because, well, it is racist, like unfortunately many pulp stories were back then. It is the cover from May 1939. All prejudice against China aside, it is quite a good cover, ridiculously dramatic. So you have both the squared jaw hero and the heroin, a damsel in distress, in a very tight spot. The hero, maybe a private eye, is shooting at an unseen enemy off frame, holding with his free hand his bloodied upper arm, while the blonde is being held by... the mechanical arm of a metallic Buddha. And she is crying on top of her lungs for his attention, as a Fu Manchu looking Chinese (he is probably Chinese, although I guess he could of any Asian denomination) is about to strike him with a hatchet. The villain is bald and has long thin mustaches. And he is emerging from a secret passage or a tunnel, or some arched alcove. What more can I say? I don't think the story can be nearly as good as the cover.

Black Forest Cakes

I will start this post with an anecdote and a great unknown line, from a German colleague. We often have chocolates and cakes at work, and two days ago it was the case, it was someone's birthday or something. I was offered some cakes and chocolates, anyway, and I said: "No thanks, I am a bit saturated with sugar." She said: "Oh but there is no such thing as being saturated with sugar!" She has a sweet tooth, I think. So do I, and I rarely truly feel saturated with sugar. I don't know why this anecdote came to my mind when I started thinking about the topic of this post.

So gradually and in the last year or so, I have started obsessing about Black Forest cakes. The way I sometimes get into the mood for some food, except that it is a permanent feeling of craving the darn dessert. I am not sure if it is because of the dark chocolate with cream or the cherries. I love chocolate, so that is always a plus in a dessert. I am not particularly into fresh cherries, shame on me, but I love them cooked in pies or in a chocolate fondue. Chocolate and cream is a great mix, chocolate and cherries too, so the three put together is simply dessert dynamite. I don't remember having any Back Forest cake as a child, I think my mother thought it was far too unhealthy, even by desserts' standards. We had all sorts, but not this one. But I loved the name. Black Forest cake. I imagined the Black Forest in question to be all dark and eerie, full of ghosts and monsters and witches (that sort). Apparently, it has nothing to do with the Black Forest. Still, the name sounds so mysterious. I guess there is nothing truly scary about it but it's caloric content.

So anyway, since last September or so, I have started trying various Black Forest cakes from various places. The picture above is a home-made one, which I had at the birthday one of of my wife's childhood friends, baked by a coworker of his wife. It was absolutely delicious, but sadly I was too full from the meal to fully appreciate it. Nevertheless, I know of a few bakeries around that make nice ones, so nothing is lost, I know where to go if I want to enjoy a good Black Forest cake. I will however enjoy them sparingly. They are decadent. I think Black Forest cake is a dessert best enjoy when temperatures start cooling down. But more on this another day.

Happy Birthday Cate Blanchett

I was planning to blog about something else, but I learned about this in the news and I thought I needed to mention it: today is the birthday of Cate Blanchett. She is 45. I am not into gossip and I care very little about celebrities. I do not consider myself a groupie. That said, I care about and admire very much actors and actresses. Talented ones. Great ones. And I consider Cate Blanchett the greatest actress of her generation, the greatest working actress, period. I remember watching Elizabeth for the time back in 1999 (I had rented it, fool that I was I did not go and see it in cinema). I was mesmerized. It took one movie and she was my favorite actress. This picture was taken yesterday by the press at Windsor Castle. She does not look a day over 30. But, more importantly, she is still a mesmerizing actress.

A concert of crows

This post is about one of those little meaningless details that make life. This evening, as I was waiting for the train home, I heard a few crows cawing. The environment at and around the little train station and near the railway leading home is quite full of animal life: there are cats prowling around, pheasants, rabbits, seagulls, dogs barking in nearby yards, etc. Usually I spend my waiting time awing at the cats like a sucker, but this time it was the crows that got my attention. I heard them first cawing from afar, loudly, then they came flying, two or three of them, and perched on a tree near the platform. So for a brief moment I enjoyed their song. As a child, I didn't like crows and corvids, I thought their cry sounded nasty and unpleasant, I thought their black feathers were sinister. Now I love them and even their cawing has a sort of primal beauty. I blogged about corvids before and I know this post sounds very much like my old one. But this evening, listening to them, I rediscovered how much enjoyable is their cawing.

Mayday! (with dramatic emphasis)

May is supposed to be the time when Spring is blossoming into summer, when it is getting warmer and sunnier, when you feel all happy about the seasonal change... Yet these days, like last year actually, May looks very much like March. Sometimes like a nasty September or even October. Do not get me wrong: I LOVE the autumnal months and September and October are my favorite months. But their weather and cold temperatures do not fit this time of year when the trees are green and the flowers in bloom. And even the autumnal man I am is starting to long for warm times, so he can later appreciate autumn completely. Now it often rains, when it does not rain the wind blows anyway, I never know what to wear to the point where the shelves of my drawers are suffering from acute schizophrenia, warm jumpers and light t shirts all mixed together. Thankfully, I do not care about a tidy wardrobe. Yet, with this month of May that looks so much like something else, I find very fitting that Mayday became an international distress signal in radio communication. To be shouted with dramatic emphasis these days.

A new exhibition on Fabian Perez

Sometimes I receive bits of news that get me excited. Like recently, I received a mailer from a local art gallery about an upcoming exhibition of Fabian Perez's new paintings. The very same gallery that made me discover his work two years ago. The gallery has sadly moved from my town, but they relocated in a nearby town, so I can still visit them. I love his paintings for many reasons, the main one being that they often look like scenes taken from a crime fiction story, old pulp magazines with a Latin twist. Pulp magazines, but not cheap ones, images that would have abandoned naïve imagery for lush and unapologizing glamour, even when he paints a man offering to light a woman's cigaret at a bar. I have decided to upload this painting to accompany my post. Sadly I have no idea of its title. I hope to take some pictures of my own when I visit the gallery.

Solace

I thought about uploading a piece of music for tonight, from Scott Joplin. Most will remember it as part of the soundtrack of The Sting, a classic crime movie and one of my favourite. Joplin's ragtime classics were rearranged and played by Marvin Hamlisch. My father had an old record of the score, which my brothers and I used to play over and over again... playing poker. I used not to care too much about Solace when I was younger, now I love its melancholic feel. Perfect for any quiet night.

Odin, an anniversary

It occured to me today that on the same date a year ago I saw Odin for the first time. I was walking back from the fish and chips shop and he came to me meowing loudly, asking for a piece of the fish I think. He struck me with his white eye, his silky black fur and the marks of what I thought had been a rough life astray. He came back to the garden and shortly after this first meeting I named him Odin. I will not rewrite the whole Odin saga in one post, but long story short he became our cat. Not for very long as he died tragically, but for a little while I had a little feline friend of my own. I am a cat person, I knew it before, but never experienced it as much as when I learned to know Odin. And today is our meeting anniversary and I wanted to commemorate it.

Griffon, my poison

As it is Friday, I carry on with the tradition of plugging either a meal in a pub or a restaurant or a pub/restaurant or sometimes something else... This time it is something else: my poison of choice. Or, to be precise, my poison of choice when I am in Québec. I drink beer, as my readership knows. I prefer it to any sort of alcohol. This IS my favorite beer, this is my poison: the Griffon rousse, or the Griffon Red Ale as it is called in English, from McAuslan. It may not be the best beer I ever drank, but it is my favorite everyday beer. It tastes like a red, it is very easy to drink, but it has malty flavour. This picture I took at Le Cornichon in Montreal, on the Plateau. This is what I mostly drink when I go home. My poison of choice.

Question existentielle (227)

SIS/MI6

I have sometimes geeky moments... This post is about one of them, which might bring me embarrassment. Because I am a James Bond fan and a Sandbaggers fan, and a Queen & Country fan, I have developed an interest about real life SIS, more commonly known as MI6. And I sometimes visit the organization's official website. Is that embarrassing? I find it fascinating, especially how unglamorous it presents itself. I blogged about MI6 before, I was thinking about writing more about it. I actually love the way the promotional videos picture SIS as this very open governmental organization, picturing its spies as competent civil servants, with fancy animation that gives it a modern, borderline funky side. There is even a page about C, with a short biography and a welcoming message from him. And we are talking about British secret services here. John Sawers does look and sound like a somewhat mild mannered civil servant. All these little details, the sober and undramatic tone, I find it surreal and oh so very interesting. As an immigrant, I browsed many governmental websites, mainly the Home Office's. But I never had fun browsing them. The website SIS, on the other hand, I just find so darn cool.

Farewell to the train station at the DIY shop

I took this picture of this model train station last Saturday, at my favourite DIY shop (and maybe my favourite shop in this town). I went there briefly to buy a light bulb and stopped to take a few snapshots of their model trains and train station. I mentioned to the shop owner, an elderly British gentleman, how much I loved it. Then he told me that it was soon going to be taken off to leave room for goods they can sell. They sell model trains, wagons and other miniature accessories, but obviously, people come to the shop to buy paint, light bulbs, gardening tools, screwdrivers, a lot of things, but not model trains and accessories. So the model train station sadly has to go. This is such a shame, as it gave character to the whole shop and, as it was an accurate depiction of the old station, it had a use if one wanted to know about a key aspect of local history. The history of this town, like many others in England, is closely related to the history of its railway. This could be in the local museum, if there was any room for it. I am borderline devastated by this imminent loss. Apart from its educational value, I am sad because I an at heart an immature boy who never completely grew up and who always loved model trains. Not nearly as nice as the one we have in our family, but still a loss.

Being "My Age"

When I got back to work after my birthday, one of my colleagues asked me: "So, did you enjoy turning your age?" We had a bit of chit-chat and she kept on asking questions like this in the conversation, always using "your age" instead of the number. Finally, I asked why she always used the word and she answered: "Because I am going to turn your age in a few weeks." Nice way to make me feel ancient. But I have to admit, this deserves to me a great unknown line. For the record, I am 37. I guess I am getting closer to 40, something I haven't thought about much, but she did. Anyway, should I freak out to be my age, on the second half of my thirties?

A home without a cat

I was thinking about it when I wrote this post yesterday, about the petty, sometimes downright bizarre rules that we have to abide to to live in this flat. I understand the rules sometimes have to be strict, but hearing the loud banging of people working here yesterday and today, from early in the morning until late in the evening, really made me think those rules are bend, if not thrown out altogether, by some owners as they seem fit, while they hypocritically ask everyone else to follow them. I reread the rules concerning animals and I would have laughed had it not been for me a subject of anger, when someone tried to interpret them in a draconian way (more here and here). So we are not allowed to keep, or to allow even on the community property and I quote (and note the absence of commas): "any cat dog bird or any live animal so as to be a nuisance or annoyances to the owners or occupiers".

I was rereading this, and I was flabbergasted. Written like this, it means not only not owning pets, but not suffering any kind of animal outside the block itself, in the communal garden. Which means I guess the birds in the garden should be shut down too. I sometimes wonder if the evil witch who left not so long ago actually wrote it. It sounds so damn austere and very much like the words she would use. The same witch who wouldn't let Odin in the garden and was accusing him of attracting vermin (?) sometimes did drilling in her flat in the middle of the night. Double standards, double interpretation of the rules. Anyway, it angers me. A home without a cat is no true home.

No gramophone?

I was reading recently the Resident's Guide of the block, looking for the specific rules about noises, as there have been people refurbishing flats nearby and they work even at weekends and very early, and I found out the most peculiar guideline: "no musical instrument gramophone radio television or other similar instrument or thing shall be played or used or any singing or dancing take place (...) between the hours of 23:00 and 07:00." Minor peculiarity: there are no commas between words. Other peculiarity: no gramophone? Gramophone? Gramophone? If you wonder when this guide is dated, it says December 2000. Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. I knew some of the owners were old, but not that ancient. I an not certain why, but reading this made me angry. Or rather I know why: we cannot own a pet animal such as a cat here and they wrote a rulebook that seems to have been invented in the bloody early XXth century! At best. A hundred years too old. This ludicrous statement about a gramophone made me think the stupid people who wrote it thought the people who would be as stupid as them. And I find it borderline insulting.

A Secret Garden?

The thing we sometimes discover in a quiet little town, even if you have been living here for nearly seven years now! I am referring to something that happened today: this garden, this public garden I may add, that is just in front of the public library... And which I have never noticed, seen or visited until today. I had seen the entrance, but thought it was some gate of an expensive private property. No. It is a very small garden, quite pretty, and virtually unknown. There was only one woman sitting on one of its benches when my wife and I found the garden. And well, that was it. A new discovery in an old town. I walked in a secret garden.

L'accent belge encore?

Ca me fait toujours penser à ceci.

Sinnerman

I don't think I ever put soul music here. Anyway, since I watched The Great Train Robbery I have Sinner Man or Sinnerman in my head, as it was featured in the drama. Even though it was probably not conscious, the beat mimics very well the sound of a train running. And it is a good ten minutes song, just for this it deserves respect in a day and age when music is so manufactured and attention span of audiences is ridiculously short. Because I fell in love with it, I decided to upload it here. This is the version of Nina Simone, maybe the most famous one and the one featured in the drama.

Meetings in a nutshell

I know it is the weekend and nobody wants to think about work, but I thought we could end the working week with a bit of humour. I saw this on the desk of one of my colleagues today. I found it hilarious and decided to take a picture of it, but then found a copy on Google so this is the one I took. This is what meetings are, in a nutshell. I know they are sometimes a necessary evil and my current employer does not abuse of them. But I remember some other jobs I had, especially the old job I had at this evil company which made me move where I am now, then threw me out at the first occasion. Then and there, we had numerous and endless meetings where everybody was clueless, but acted as if we were all doing something very productive. Even in my old school job, the one when I felt like a pariah, they were organizing meetings for teaching assistants far more than necessary. So this image and its caustic humor made me laugh anyway.
