Trick or treat

Tonight I went on a walk, to see this ancient old tradition of trick-or-treating. It is one of the ways for me to connect to the spirit of Halloween and it brings me back to my own childhood. I visited again the house of this American family I visited last year. As it was earlier in the evening they were much busier. Last year, they had treated me with a glass of wine ("Witch blood from Northern Italy"), but this year because I have been sick today I did not wait until I was offered anything. I just told them I had to stop by and see their display. It was impressive: every window had an image of a skull or an undead (holding a machete or a butcher's knife of course), two giant inflatable black cats were also on display and there was a black tent full of horrific decorations and with gloomy music to top it up. Their children were hosting too and scaring their fellow trick or treaters. I love the way they do it, huge and unapologetically extravagant.

Other places were obviously more modest, some only had jack-o'lanterns (you can see some of them here). That said, I don't know if it was because I got out earlier, but this year it felt like the whole town was really celebrating, people were really enjoying it and there were many children, going at every door, all laughing, smiling, screaming, playfully scared when they were. Even the parents were disguised! Trick-or-treating, at its best, really brings up community spirit to a neighbourhood, it makes people share. Share treats obviously, but also share a moment, celebrate together. If I was in the right place, not on the top floor of a quiet block, I would try to celebrate it like this and make it big and excessive, as much as I can anyway. With treats for children and adults.

Happy Halloween 2013!

"Black cats and goblins and broomsticks and ghosts
Covens of witches with all of their hosts
You may think they scare me
You're probably right
Black cats and goblins on Halloween night
."

These are the rhymes said by the children at the beginning of Halloween. I think they were originals. I am writing this from home, recovering from a virus. Sick on Halloween, but getting better. And there are always ways to enjoy Halloween from home if you are sick. I wanted to wish everyone from the blogosphere a happy Halloween. To kick start the day that will soon turn into night, I thought of putting the rhyme here, and the Jack O'Lantern.

Jack O'Lanterns (two more)

Here it is, tonight I had a little bit more time, as I got home early from work because of sickness. Above is the first one I carved tonight, the second one this season, and my favourite. I was not too happy with my first attempt yesterday. This time I wanted Jack to look devilish, really nasty, and I think I succeeded. And below is the last one, which I wanted to make a more brutish, thuggish Jack. The picture does not give it justice, but I think it is a good Jack nevertheless.
He looks like he is smiling too much. Strangely enough this is not the case. Anyway, tell me what you think of the two.

Halloween cauldron

I got this cauldron full of goodies (chocolate Jack O'Lantern, witch shaped chocolates, ghost shaped chocolates, spider shaped chocolates) from the local sweet shop. In the end, the shop did not close, it just changed ownership. I don't like it as much, but there is still a good deal of products I love. Among them, this seasonal one. It reminds me of the old Halloween bags we used to get when we went trick or treating, with lots of differents sweets in them. Except this one is much fancier: it is even in a cauldron. It also illustrates the gluttonous aspect of Halloween, which I blogged about two years ago exactly. So I bought this cauldron full of sugary goodness. It looks almost too good to start.

L'horreur, l'horreur.

First Jack O'Lantern

This is the Jack O'Lantern I carved tonight, the first of three pumpkins this year. One for each brother they told me on Facebook, as neither will carve one this year. This is the smallest of the three, so I guess it will be Devadar's, for the youngest brother. I think this Jack looks way too nice and friendly. Even in the dark, the smile is just too... warm. But maybe there is something fiendish about it, a serpent's smile. Tell me what you think. Tomorrow I will finish the work and carve the other two. I am too tired tonight.

"For life is short but death is long"

Quick before bed countdown to Halloween post. Picture takenr ecently from the window of a costumes shop here. It is the mask of a grey werewolf that I find quite terrifying. This post is about a werewolf, well, sort of, but I would have rather have found a more obvious Memento mori. That said, this year Samhain has been early on werewolf oriented, so I will use this picture. Remember when I uploaded this song from Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man? Well, the original video does not exist anymore, I will need to buy the film if I want to listen to it when I am in the mood. But I found on YouTube this nice cover from Zip Caplan (no idea who he is) and his Casts of Thousands. I thought it was a good little rock version of the song. For me, this is an essential part of Halloween music. Read my original post to know why I find it so important.

Trois citrouilles...

On avait parfois jusqu'à trois citrouilles à creuser lorsqu'on était enfants.

A tale of Jack O'Lantern

So I can be forgiven for not writing the Jack O'Lantern story I promised, I have uploaded here: 1)one picture of three jack o'lanterns I took last year and 2)a take on the legend of Jack O'Lantern I found on YouTube. The jack were taken from the window of a barber shop nearby. They are not that great and not even real pumpkin, but it is still nice to have some Halloween decorations here. The tale I thought was quite fun. Anyway, tell me what you think about it. You can compare it to my own, which you can find here and here.

Black cats and Halloween

Today's countdown to Halloween post would be much shorter than expected. I thought I would start writing the Jack O'Lantern story I promised I promised at the beginning of the countdown. But now, after that trip home and a frantic end of month at work, I find myself a bit too tired to write a Halloween story. I am sad, as I have an idea in mind and I wanted to write my own supernatural story, like I did in the past two years. But hey... Instead, I am uploading this picture I found online, which is also an advice to cat owners, especially black cats owners. So keep them indoors. From what I read, it seems that nasty minded people, some superstitious, can be in the mood to hurt them, maybe even kill them. I love folklore when it remains this, folklore, and not a set of serious, modern beliefs. So yes, keep them indoors so you will have your home naturally spookier.

A cat, a ghost, a Jack O'Lantern

I thought before midnight, as I am still up, I would write another quick countdown to Halloween post. So I simply uploaded this decoration found at l'Intermarché on Mont-Royal Avenue, in Montreal. Because there is a black cat, a ghost and a Jack O'Lantern (yes I write it with capital letters). And because nothing saays Halloween like a black cat, a ghost and a Jack O'Lantern. That is a good enough reason.

Changement d'heure

Black Shuck

This is my new countdown to Halloween post, it is about an old British folkloric creature: Black Shuck. I have learned about him first on All About Ghosts, a book I blogged about recently. The image you see on your left is from the book. As you can see, he is sometimes depicted as having one eye, which makes him all the more sinister. You can read more about Black Shuck here. He is a ghostly hound that often appears in British folklore and is one of the most famous. I find ghostly or devilish hounds the lost children of eerie folklore and horror stories. Werewolves, vampires, ghosts, heck even witches to some degree have showed up in modern horror fiction. Devilish hounds like Black Shuck? Well, The Hound of the Baskerville is famous, but he was rationalized in a crime fiction story and in the end he is nothing but a trained killing dog. But supernatural hounds in horror fiction, there are very little that I know of. Maybe ghostly hounds are too beastly to relate to (I mean you cannot have a conversation with them, unlike a lycanthrope in human form or a vampire), maybe they limit the narrative and plot possibilities. All the same, I'd like to have a crack at one of them, maybe Black Shuck himself.

When darkness falls

Quick countdown to Halloween post tonight, I am a zombie, or close to become one, so tired. But anyway, something I have been noticing more and more when I walk off the train back from work: it is already dark in the evening, shortly after 6. Not pitch black, but very close to it. The hour of the wold, as my mum used to say when we were children. I think she used to do it to scare us a bit and convince us to go to bed. In Quebec, we call this time "entre chien et loup", which means the time when one cannot make the difference between a dog and a wolf. It would be the ideal time for a wolf, or a werewolf to attack. In any case, I love this time in autumn, late October, when it gets dark and eerie. Not much to say, except that getting off the train was a nice little Halloween moment.

A Halloween anniversary

Here is tonight's countdown to Halloween post, and also a reminder for every Halloween aficionados about tomorrow. I was wondering what to blog about, then an article of the BBC I found this evening reminded me that tomorrow is the 35th anniversary of Halloween by John Carpenter. Last time I blogged about it was on the day of its 30th anniversary, although I think I was completely unaware of it. It is one of my favourite horror movies, the first and maybe only true great slasher (unless you count its father Psycho). I love everything about Halloween, the simplicity and sobriety of its plot, its creepy score, its atmosphere, its flaws even (the low budget shows, but somehow it never betrays the film), its dark humour, never out of place, its ways of embodying everything that is at the core of Halloween. It had sequels, none nearly as good as the original, often just as bad as the many, too many clones and bastard children Halloween created. To celebrate, I will of course watch it. I encourage you to read the BBC article, which is quite interesting and until tomorrow, to put you in the mood, to watch and listen to the opening credits, which you can find below.

Musing on witches

Tonight, I have decided to write a more substantial and more profound post for the countdown to Halloween. This picture was taken on the Plateau Mont-Royal in Montreal. A decoration that I found absolutely beautiful, with the witch and her black cat surrounded by bats. The witch is one of the most famous characters of Halloween, one of the most pictured anyway, one of the most seen among trick or treaters and she is in folklore one of the most famous characters of old stories, often a villain, sometimes an ally, sometimes a morally ambiguous character.

That said, nowadays, in horror stories, the witch is a relatively little used villain. I have a theory about the cause: for one, so called witches have been persecuted and massacred through centuries, burned at the stake (the Catholic way), hanged (the English way), tortured and so on and so forth. Nowadays, witchcraft is associated with neopaganism and their practitioners appear harmless, except for some fundamentalist Christians, hardly the stuff of nightmare anyway. I think it is a bit of a shame really. Because witches are wonderful villains, heck, they are wonderful characters, period. They have various appearances, sometimes beautiful and mysterious, sometimes ugly and deformed, they represent evil in all shapes and sizes, both the seductive, bewitching aspect, and the terrifying one. Same thing with the way they perform evil: they use poisons, curses, they spy, they scheme, in other words they are lying, hypocritical, treacherous villains, which makes them all the more despicable. There is a witch in this neighbourhood, so I know what I'm talking about. She may not poison (yet), but she certainly spies. And since she hates cats, this hag has no redeeming quality whatsoever. So I wish they would show up more in horror fiction. M.R. James did a great job in The Ash Tree, but even the witch was from another age. I would love a modern take on it (anybody has any reading suggestions?). I remember vividly a few childhood dreams about witches, maybe I should try myself at it. And there is the one living nearby, but this one is a bit too close to comfort.

Question existentielle (207)

A dark and stormy night (this time)

This is a quick countdown to Halloween post. Recently, there was a dark and stormy afternoon, the day after I got back from Montreal. I said then that it was a rare sight, a storm in October, an autumnal storm. Well, there is another one now, in the night. It stopped for now, but they are forecasting thunderstorms all night. So it is now, literally, a dark and stormy night. The cliché atmosphere for horror stories, if there ever is one. I hope it brings me inspiration for the one I want to write. If not, then at least I will enjoy the atmosphere.

A friendly ghost

Once upon a time, I do show softer, friendlier aspects of Halloween, even though I usually prefer the darker, sinister aspect of the holiday. That said, it is a dreary autumnal Monday today and I am a bit short of energy and inspiration, so I thought I would put this picture on the blog to cheer people up. I bought it in a charity shop. A small decoration, with an interesting background of dry crop and pumpkins. You see the harvest and autumnal side of Halloween, with a smiling ghost bearing apple-red cheeks. The ghost is a bit of a scarecrow in this environment, although I don't think he can scare even birds. For my thoughts about ghosts, from the mischievous ones to the nasty, even malevolent ones, please read this post. I hope you don't mind this friendlier incarnation for now.

Halloween and D&Dr

I did not blog about Dungeons & Dragons for a little while and thought it was time to blog about it in relation with Halloween. This picture is of course from Larry Elmore and is aptly titled Eyes of Autumn. You can see what is probably a witch guarding her domain, holding menacingly a staff, her black cat (familiar spirit?) walking rather indifferently on the side. Beside her, a pumpkin, behind her, a menacingly looking scarecrow, whose head is reminiscent of a Jack O'Lantern. You ca see the eyes are shining, which would indicate that it is magically animated and could be an adversary itself. In a way, this image is reminiscent of Early Snow. In any case, Eyes of Autumn is fitting for this time of year, as it is not only heavily influenced by autumn, but also by Halloween.

Which leads me to the relation my favourite holiday and my favourite game have, at least in my personal experience. Back in the days when my brothers and I could play at D&Dr all year round, Halloween was a special time to enjoy the game. Of course, when one plays Dungeons & Dragons, the time of the year on the calendar does not necessarily fit the game's calendar, which is susceptible to change much faster. Nevertheless, in the early years we often managed to fit at least some of our gaming session with the time of year. The atmosphere, the monsters we fought, they were modeled after eerie themes and often belonged as much to the horror genre than medieval fantasy. We even had an equivalent of Halloween in our game, the Day of the Dead, celebrated on October 31st. In more recent year, in our current epic campaign, we managed to take hold of the artifact the villains wanted to invade the world on the 31st of October. Ironically we played this game during Christmastime. It was a great game, but I do miss the time when we were lower levels and could travel in woodlands, to find in the middle of nowhere a small cottage, inhabited by a sinister lady.

A dark and stormy day (?)

Sometimes, circumstances create the topic of your countdown to Halloween post. Which is the case now: it has been raining, sometimes pouring, and there have been thunderstorms going on since this morning at least. Thunderstorms. In October. You know the famous incipit "It was a dark and stormy night", which could be used as a cliché opening line for many scary stories, good or bad. Well, today is a dark and stormy day, and it reminds me that even clichés can be sometimes real.

Maudit décalage-horaire. D'habitude, je me couche vers minuit et je me réveille vers sept heures ou un truc du genre, très tôt. Là j'ai perdu presque tout mon dimanche.

Halloween bags

I am very jet lagged and missing Montreal already. That said, I wanted to write a countdown to Halloween post today (at least one). So I decided to upload another picture I took on the Plateau Mont-Royal of something I have not seen here: Halloween bags. They are basically rubbish bags with the colours and features of Jack O'Lanterns, ghosts, witches' hats or monsters. You fill them with autumn leaves and this makes them both useful and decorative. And you can start decorating your garden for Halloween as soon as the leaves start falling.

Islands of pumpkins

I am about to leave Montreal, it is going to be the end of my stay in a few mintues. Well, I will go to the airport soon, but this is not the same. I am writing here a quick countdown to Halloween post, before I call the taxi. It is a sort of version to this post in French and an excuse to upload a picture form my stay. This picture is, in a nutshell, what October, autumn and Halloween is to me in Montreal, or at least on the Plateau. I took it at the outdoor market by the Mont-Royal subway station. A box full of big pumpkins, huge by UK's standards, for only $3,95. I nearly bought one, then I remembered I would not carve a Jack O'Lantern here. But this what I will keep in my mind for the weeks to come: not only the decorations everywhere (which I will show in future posts), but the islands of pumpkins in boxes like this one, of all shapes and sizes, as well as already featured, still uncarved, on people's home entrances and balconies.

A scary scarecrow

Today, I was not certain what to publish for my countdown to Halloween post. So I have decided to upload a picture of a Jack O'Lantern in scarecrow form, half hidden underneath dry crop (I think), on the same display at l'Inter-Marché on Mont-Royal Avenue I blogged about before. You see less of this scarecrow/Jack, but it makes him more menacing I think, he's hiding, surveying potential human preys. There are many Halloween displays around here, but I think this one is so far my favourite.

Ça me manquait et ça va me manquer.

Little tea shop of horrors

Boy do I feel stupid today. I mean really stupid. As you know, I bought The Perfect Tea Mug recently, from David's Tea. I was enthusiastic about it: I had been dreaming about an autumnal looking tea mug and autumnal tea, which I had found in the pumpkin chai. In fact, I was so enthusiastic about it that I bought it for my brother's birthday. And then, no later than today, I discover on their Facebook page (where I downloaded this picture) that they now have a spooky collection. With a new perfect tea mug, in beautiful orange and black, with a pumpkin that turns into a Jack O'Lantern when you pour hot water in it. And of course since this is The Perfect Tea Mug, meant to drink tea, you will pour hot water in it. So now they are selling a spooky perfect tea mug and I only have a perfect tea mug. I am very tempted to buy it, but for a third time, I think I would be pushing it. All the same, I feel really, really stupid. That said, what lovely collection, for Halloween afficionadi and tea drinkers.

On sent vraiment l'Halloween arriver.

The Detective Tales cover for October

This is the time of the traditional upload of a cover from Detective Tales magazine. As it is October and Halloween is coming, I wanted something that would look as much as something from a horror story as crime fiction. Sometimes the genres were mixed and there were elements of adventures. It was going to be difficult to do as well as last year. Have a thorough research, I found the cover from October 1937, which seems to fit. You see the hero and the beautiful heroine going against what appears to be an evil cultist. There are skulls in the background. There are two villains: one henchman holding a bone as a club, the other one in a green robe and green mask, shooting at the hero. Maybe there is no supernatural in the story, yet the villain is more than your usual mobster or megalomaniac.

Question existentielle (206)

A bird in the house

This is my countdown to Halloween post, which is completely anecdotal. A small event happened this morning and I did not even witness it. Basically, a bird, a starling to be precise, what we call étourneau in Québec, got lost in the chimney of my parents' fireplace in Chicoutimi. It happened before, but usually it was the basement's fireplace, this time it was the upstairs one. My dad managed to get a hold of him and release him in nature. So he saved a bird's life.

This isHalloween related for two reasons: 1)in folklore, a bird showing up in a house is considered a bad omen. 2)It reminds me of a scene in The Birds. I have seen the movie fairly often, it is not on my usual Halloween list of horror movies, but I do watch it form time to time. I even bought the original novel by Daphne Du Maurier. I haven't read it yet. Just for kicks, I have uploaded the famous scene form the movie.

The Arsenal against the Forces of Darkness (revisited)

This is my countdown to Halloween post. People may remember my post last year about the arsenal against the Forces of Darkness (vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, etc.). I had come up with a detailed list, some people came up with their own suggestions in their comments. I read my list again and, while it is quite good, I think it is still incomplete. So I came up here with some extra, which would not be cumbersome to the whole, but on the contrary complete it:

-A thick turtle neck jumper. Its main use would of course be against vampires: it covers the most vulnerable part of your body for a vampiric attack. Thick clothes also protect you from the claws and fangs of werewolves. If there is a ghost you need to deal with, the temperature of the room drops significantly (according to this book), so the jumper is also a plus for this kind of situation.

-Garlic vaporiser, just like a perfume but with... Well, yes, garlic. I would rather smell like Italian salad dressing than a feast for vampire. It might also weaken the vampire.

-A powerful flashlight. Any idea which brand would be best? A strong light is useful because to actually see the enemy, but also because many of the servants of evil are sensitive to light.

-Matches and maybe a lighter. Because fire, if difficult to control, can be very effective against witches and werewolves, among others.

So that's it. Any suggestions?

All About Ghosts

This is my countdown to Halloween post. I am pluging here a rather bad book, All About Ghosts. I bought it in a French translation back in the 80s. I said it is a bad one and I am even tempted to say that it has no education value whatsoever. Which is why it is a bad book: it is basically is a children's guide to the paranormal. There was some chapters about how people faked hauntings, but overall it was a pure embrace of supernatural explanations for unexplained phenomenons. I didn't develop my critical thinking reading it. That said, I can't help loving it and I still enjoy reading it.

There are two reasons for this: 1)the images. Oh gosh the images! Beautiful, eerie, scary, they were a source of inspiration for many games of our childhood. 2)with all its flaws, it still taught me a few things about ghostly folklore, superstitions, legends and more particularly British folklore, superstitions and legends. You can find more art and more about the book on this blog. If you want to write horror fiction (say someone invites you to write one), I would actually recommend to have this work on your bookshelves.

Chicoutimi's Fame

This is my countdown to Halloween post. As I am in Chicoutimi, it is also about ChicoutimiI have never watched How I Met Your Mother, I mean actually sat down and watched a full episode. I have seen bits of episodes of it on TV before The Big Bang Theory. That said, I learned recently from my brother that Chicoutimi is mentioned in an Halloweeen episode, The Slutty Pumpkin Returns. I have found the clip on YouTube, which I have decided to upload here. A quick note, there is something inaccurate with the sentence. A poutine shortage would be something serious indeed, but nobody cares about curling in Chicoutimi, not enough anyway to start a curling bonspiel. That said, well, Chicoutimi now has something else to be famous for.

The Great Pumpkin and a train

This is a new, short countdown to Halloween post. I found this picture on the Facebook website of LGB trains. It represents, well, the whole Peanuts gang on a train wagon in a display about It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. I LOVE this cartoon, which I blogged about here. I wish I had this wagon. Electric trains, Snoopy AND the Halloween season, this is just the perfect cocktail.

The Perfect Tea Mug

I am plugging David's Tea and their products only four days after I blogged about them. I get enthusiastic like this. I also use shamelessly a picture I took from their Facebook page. It is a beautiful autumnal picture, so I might as well use it. Little anecdote: I discovered that two of my Facebook friends also love David's Tea. There is another reason I wanted to use this picture on this blog: it shows the perfect tea mug. Or, as used in the title of this post: The Perfect Tea Mug. Because it is. I bought the one with animals motives (foxes, squirrels, various birds and owls), but there are others. I already used it half a dozen of times.

So why is it The Perfect Tea Mug? I will quote the company: "So what makes this mug so perfect? Well, aside from being the perfect size and shape, it comes with a fine, stainless steel infuser that fits right into it. Plus it has a lid, the ultimate tea-steeping accessory. Lids keep all the aroma and heat in the cup, for an even better tea experience. And when you’re done steeping, just use the lid as a little plate for the infuser – how perfect is that? Dishwasher safe. Microwave safe, except for metal infuser." So here it is. You'll thank me for the tip.

A new Danse Macabre

Good news: I am alive today, whatever I was dreading yesterday. Alive and much better. So I can blog again. For today's countdown to Halloween post, I have decided to upload, as it is a yearly tradition, a take on Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre. A danse macabre is also fitting when I had the feeling I was a death's door yesterday. It was difficult to find something as good as the animation I found last year. I looked and looked, then found something on YouTube, a sort of animated puppet show by the Grim Musketeers (!), where lots of Halloween decorations are used, including a Jack O'Lantern. This is not nearly as beautiful or as professionally crafted as last year's Danse Macabre, but still, it is a charming little piece of work, and there is an enjoyable if a bit stereotypical story to complete the music. The piece is sadly truncated, nevertheless it is good enough for Vraie Fiction.

The Quick and the Dead

Quick update on this blog, sorry if I might not blog as much as I wanted. I am feeling sick, like I have a shiver and a bit of a cold. On holidays. I hate when it happens, especially now. So today after my short walk, I stopped to buy chicken noodle soup and salty crackers, the only think I can think of eating without feeling sick. When the employee showed me where I could find the whole thing, he told me: "Good luck sir". And I had not even told him why I wanted soup and crackers. So I answered: ."Why good luck? Do I look like I'm at the Gates of Hell already?" He laughed a lot. So this is my new great unknown line. Hopefully not my last.

Halloween in Montreal

I am very slow writing my countdown to Halloween posts. I usually write at least one a day, but not always in English. So here is this evening's one. I took this picture at the entrance of l'Inter-marché on Mont-Royal avenue. They have a display at the entrance, with among other things this Jack O'Lantern looking very much like a scarecrow. I guess a supermarket would play with the harvest associations a lot. But it struck me: here Halloween is everywhere. Every shop has its display, modest or elaborate, houses already have decorations outside and you really feel the day coming.

What I mean by bagels

I plugged relatively recently the bagels of St-Viateur. I went on the one on Mont-Royal Avenue as soon as I got here. And again yesterday, where I toold this picture. Traditional smoked salmon bagel sandwich, with a soup on the side. This is what I mean by bagels. I don't think I can get tired of it. It tastes like home.

Autumn tea (and David's Tea)

This is one of the new happy discoveries I had walking on Mont-Royal Avenue yesterday: David's Tea a nice and trendy tea shop chain. The place has changed a lot since I left Montreal: a few years ago, cafés like Second Cup,Van Houtte and the dreaded Starbucks were dominating the place. Not that I minded, for me they are part of Montreal, but as a tea drinker I am happy I now have a choice, a place specialised in the drink. I mean, drinking tea in a café is nice enough, if they have quality stuff, but it is still not their area of expertise. It makes a nice difference to have a proper tea shop.

So yes, I went there yesterday and it took me about 30 seconds to be completely sold. Here's the reason why: they have a fall collection. Fall as in autumn. And it smells and tastes so nice. I bought the pumpkin chai. Well of course. A whole packet of it. And I had a small pack of mom's apple pie. The irony is that I am no big fan of apple pies. But it really smelled lovely. Here is an anecdote to illustrate how good it is: when I was back, my brother was about to make molasse cookies (galettes à la mélasse). I suggested we had them in an afternoon tea. He was not keen as he is a coffee drinker. But then he smelled the pumpkin chai. And he was sold. I had been waiting, hoping to find a tea that was autumnal. I was about to ask my readership for some help. Now to think I found it, at complete random, in Montreal.

Halloween: Magic, Mystery and the Macabre

I haven't blogged a countdown to mHalloween post yet today and I did not upload a picture of autumnal Montreal yet. Shame on me. The pictures will have to wait sadly, nevertheless I will write a Halloween-related post. The title of it is the same as the book (or one of the books) I am reading right now, edited by Paula Guran. I was looking to horror stories to read this season, but specifically related to Halloween, not merely horror stories, so I would avoid those many ghosts stories set during Christmastime. I was checking on Amazon when I found this one. I ordered it immediately. However, there was a catch I hadn't noticed: in fact, I wanted to buy this book, simply titled Halloween and edited by the same Paula Guran. The first book, published in 2011, was an anthology of horror stories set during Halloween written by reknown authors (Lovecraft and E. Nesbit for instance). It had inspired the creation of Halloween: Magic, Mystery and the Macabre. Maybe it is the title that appealed to me most, and the cover of course, with its grinning Jack O'Lanterns. So I ordered the first one when I discovered my mistake, but of course I kept this one. I am now the proud owner of a whole collection of horror stories, mainly classic tales of terror, but now, thanks to this book, very contemporary ones too. I have read one story so far. One story and a half in fact. Quite entertaining.

Autumnal chill

I woke up this morning very early, because of the jetlag, in a Montreal apartment that was quite cool. Well, not downright cold, but cool. My brother had kept the windows open. After a bit of surprise, I actually found it quite pleasant: an autumnal chill like I missed them, just crisp and dry like they are in Montreal. And the trees are gorgeous outside.

Witching hour

As I did not do my countdown to Halloween post on Friday (yesterday when you are reading this, but not as I am typing this), I have decided to write quickly a post about Halloween now. As you are reading the post, it is the witching hour. I am in bed and hopefully sleeping, as I will be traveling tomorrow. Not on a broomstick and during daytime (mostly). So I guess I am not a witch (or a warlock, as the male witches are called), in spite of my friendship with a black cat. And in spite of my somewhat nocturnal nature.

Café2U is back! (for now)

Today I had a happy surprise in the morning: Café2U was back! I thought they had gone bankrupt. They had stopped coming more than a year ago, in July 2012. I had seen their vans after that when I was walking home, in the little town where I live, back in September or October 2012. That had been the last sight. Then thir morning, a little bit after 10, I get this mailer saying they were here. Sadly they didn't have the delicious chocolate cornetto they used to have, only plain croissants. So I had a hot chocolate as my Friday treat. Not as big as the one they used to make: there was no whipped cream or marshmallows. I think they learned from their mistakes and know they must be more efficient delivering their food and drinks. I hope this time they last, and thrive, because I love their little business and they are lovely people.

A black cat for Halloween

This is my second countdown to Halloween post today, and of course it had to be about my feline friend Odin. Two days ago, when I reminded people on Facebook that there was only one month until Halloween, one of my friends mentioned: "And you already have a black cat". It deserved to be a great unknown line, it also reminded me that, well, he was right, as there is a black cat in my life and black cats do belong to Halloween lore. So it made perfect sense that I blogged about Odin in one of my countdown posts.

Of course, whoever says black cats and Halloween says witches. There is a witch in the neighborhood, however and ironically enough she hates cats in general and Odin in particular. She keeps on talking to people about that bloody cat, but she does not dare to confront me. I have heard that she thinks cats bring vermin. I had evidence to the contrary no later than tonight, and in quite a dramatic fashion, as I have a phobia of small rodents. Rats in particular, but to a lesser extend mice and whatever is their direct relatives. I was checking on Odin, when I saw him getting out of his dwelling... with a mouse in his mouth. It actually gave me a shock. Yes, I am that much of a wuss when it comes to mice, I am afraid of them, in a horrified way, even when they are dead and thus very much harmless, hanging down from a cat's mouth. You should have seen my friend's look of surprise when he saw me scared, there was something so ironic and mocking. He came back to me later, asking for cuddles. Anyway, this episode reassured me: Odin may be partially blind from one eye, he can still hunt. The vet had told me that, I had difficulties believing her.
